State Police believe the cop killer in Baton Rouge was out to target and ambush the officers he shot. From BRPD, 41-year-old Matthew Gerald and 32-year-old Montrell Jackson died. East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Deputy Brad Garafola also succumbed to his injuries, and officials say another deputy is recovering and another in critical condition. Baton Rouge is reeling today over the police shootings Sunday that claimed the lives of 3 law enforcement officers, and injured 3 others. It was one of the most tragic days in Louisiana history. State Police Colonel Mike Edmonson says federal, state and local enforcement are investigating why this tragic shooting occurred…:

State Police officially confirmed the identity of the man who shot and killed three law enforcement officers, and injured 3 others Sunday in Baton Rouge. They confirmed through fingerprints that it was 29-year-old Gavin Long of Kansas Missouri. Officials say they will release additional information about the investigation at a 2pm news conference. State Police Colonel Mike Edmonson says at 8:40 yesterday morning, a police officer saw an individual wearing all black and holding a rifle on Airline Highway and two minutes later there were reports of shots fired…:

The two Baton Rouge police officers killed have been identified as 41-year-old Matthew Gerald and 32-year-old Montrell Jackson. 45-year-old EBRSO Deputy Brad Garafola also died. Sheriff Sid Gautreaux says 41-year-old deputy Nicholas Tullier is currently in critical condition, and 51-year-old Bruce Simmons has non-life threatening injuries.

The fatal officer shootings in Baton Rouge came two days after the funeral of Alton Sterling, a 37-year-old black man fatally shot during a confrontation with two white police officers. The shooting of Sterling set off a series of protests seeking justice. Governor John Bel Edwards says Baton Rouge is a community hurting, but more violence is not the answer…:

East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore has announced that over half of the protesters who were arrested following the shooting death of Alton Sterling will not face charges. Moore says he will not prosecute about 100 of the cases, because the demonstrators were arrested only on misdemeanor counts, simple obstruction of a highway.

Authorities in Baton Rouge have arrested a fourth person who was allegedly involved in a pawn shop burglary where guns were stolen that would be used to kill police officers. The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s office says a 12-year-old male juvenile was booked into the Juvenile Detention Center. Three other suspects are also in custody

Louisiana’s health department says enrollment for the state’s expanded Medicaid program, known as Healthy Louisiana, has reached 250-thousand new adults. According to the L-D-H, Healty Louisiana will bring health insurance coverage to an estimated 375-thousand working Louisianans.

The state Department of Education has announced Sedric Clark, the principal at Mansfield High in DeSoto Parish is the principal of the year, while Joni Smith, a seventh grade science teacher at Albany Middle School in Livingston Parish is the teacher of the year. An awards banquet was held last night.

Running back Leonard Fournette, center Ethan Pocic, linebacker Kendell Beckwith and cornerback Tre’Davious White are the four LSU players who made the media’s preseason All-SEC team. Fournette rushed for nearly two-thousand yards and 22 touchdowns last season. He was asked at SEC Media Days, how he can improve on those numbers in 2016…

A Prairieville man faces up 10 years in prison as an Ascension Parish jury found him guilty of aggravated cruelty after he used a baseball bat to kill a dog. Thirty-three-year-old Jamari Jackson claimed in 2014 the dog got the stuck in a barbed wire fence, but veterinary experts said the dog died from blunt-force trauma injuries.

Thousands attended the funeral service for Alton Sterling. Among those was a woman who bought CDs from Sterling outside the convenience store where he was shot during a confrontation with two police officers. She says Sterling was a really nice guy and something must be done to put an end to the violence.

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s office says a 12-year-old male juvenile was booked into the Juvenile Detention Center for simple burglary and theft of a firearm. Three other suspects are also in custody. Officials say eight handguns were stolen during the break-in last weekend.

The funeral service for Alton Sterling, the black man shot during a confrontation with white police officers was a peaceful one. There was a steady stream of mourners who walked past his open casket during a somber service on the campus of Southern University yesterday. Barry Davison says he came to support the family during this difficult time. He’s hopeful something positive will come of this tragedy….

ULM political science professor Dr. Joshua Stockley says US Representative John Fleming reports $2.4 million in his campaign funds and State Treasurer John Kennedy has collected $1.4 million. Thousands gathered at Southern University Friday morning for Alton Sterling’s funeral service, and to call for justice. Dr. Gary Clark is a professor at Dillard University in New Orleans who grew up in Baton Rouge. He hopes reform in police departments will become a political platform for national leadership…:

State Police say a pedestrian was killed in Monroe. Trooper Michael Reichardt says 53-year-old Matthew Davis was struck and killed as he was trying to cross US Hwy 165 at a busy intersection…:

A wrong way driver on I-20 in Monroe also died in a fiery crash following a head on collision with an 18 wheeler. 31-year-old Christopher Moss of Calhoun crossed the median for unknown reasons then smashed into the big rig.

Police were involved in another shooting Friday morning in Jefferson Parish. Sheriff Newell Normand says deputies were involved in a high speed chase after seeing a vehicle linked to multiple car burglaries. He says 40-year-old Melissa Belanger used her truck as a weapon against officers so a deputy fired shots hitting her wrists. The sheriff says she’ll be charged once released from the hospital.

East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore announced today he will not prosecute about 100 of the 185 individuals who were arrested during protests over Sterling’s death. Moore says he’s dismissing the cases of those who were charged with obstruction of a highway. He says those demonstrators that were charged with assaults, resisting arrest or violent acts will face prosecution.

There was another police shooting today. Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand says his deputies were involved in a high speed chase early this morning after spotting a vehicle linked to a number of car burglaries. He says one of his deputies fired shots at 40-year-old Melissa Belanger, who was using her vehicle as a weapon…:
