Governor John Bel Edwards said on his monthly call-in radio show this afternoon that he will not rescind his order that requires most state contracts to include language that would protect LGBT citizens from workplace discrimination. Edwards lost a court case this week against Attorney General Jeff Landry on this issue.

The House Judiciary Committee held a meeting today to talk about ways to improve community relations with law enforcement. State Police Col. Mike Edmonson says they want to also address how the public responds to law enforcement. He says many young people don’t know what to do if they get pulled over.

Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser is ready to improve the Louisiana’s seafood industry. Nungesser says our state produces over 850 million pounds of seafood each year. He says when you put seafood and tourism together, it accounts for 14-billion dollars in annual revenue and the two should help each other.

Jefferson Parish President Mike Yenni went before the parish council today for the first time since his sexting scandal with a 17-year-old boy broke. The council called for Yenni’s resignation and gave him a vote of no confidence. One resident told Yenni at the meeting that 79-percent of people in the parish want him out of office. Many others said they are concerned Yenni offered the teen a job. But Yenni made it clear he’s not going to willingly resign.

The Department of Agriculture says its getting millions of dollars from the federal government to help keep your food safe. The FDA says Louisaina will get more than $3 million dollars to help meet new safety standards. Louisiana Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Mike Strain said he will use some of the money to create a partnership with the federal government, which could mean more training for some farmers.

Republican State Treasurer John Kennedy was a target for attacks in last night’s debate. Democratic Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell asked Republican Congressman Charles Boustany to respond to an ad by Kennedy in which he jokes about suicide and drinking weed killer.

Kennedy responded, saying he’d rather drink weed killer than answer that.

A state legislative committee is meeting at this hour to talk about lawsuits filed by several coastal parishes against oil and gas companies, as the parishes claim they’re polluting their land. But House Natural Resources Committee chairman Stuart Bishop says parishes like Terrebonne and Lafourche oppose the suit.

Bishop says the goal of today’s meeting is to have an open dialogue about this issue.

The Caldwell Parish Superintendent issues an apology regarding the strip search that was conducted on students at Caldwell Parish High School to find a missing $42. Superintendent John Gullatt apologized to the students involved and their families, saying the incident must be addressed. He added that teachers and administrators will receive additional training.

Flu season is just around the corner and heath officials are urging folks to go ahead and get vaccinated now. State Medical Director Dr. Frank Welch says high risk groups include elderly people, pregnant women, and people with chronic health conditions, but everyone should get the shot:

The Jefferson Parish Council meets today, and Parish President Mike Yenni is supposed to be there. All members on the council have called for Yenni to resign since he admitted to sending improper text messages to a 17-year-old boy. Yenni has said he doesn’t plan to step down because what he did was just a stupid mistake and not illegal. Analysts expect the meeting to be awkward.
