A meeting to discuss the future of the Confederate momunment that stands in front of the Caddo Parish courthouse ended abruptly last night. The Caddo Commission Monument Advisory adjourned quickly after starting, because one member wasn’t there. Chairman RJ Johnson is surprised the meeting was postponed.
The head of Louisiana’s Office of Community Development, Pat Forbes, says they are ramping up on spending the federal grant money designed to help flood victims get back in their homes. Forbes says one of the complaints they’ve heard is that there’s not enough money, but he says they actually have enough to help out a whole bunch of folks….

The Humane Society of Louisiana says a Denham Springs couple found a cat that had a gunshot wound to the face. Executive Director Jeff Dorson says they are working with law enforcement to determine who shot the cat. He says the cat will undergo reconstruction and extraction surgery…

The Tax Foundation has updated its national review of sales tax rates and finds Louisiana continues to rank number one in the nation. We’ve got a combined state and local sales tax rate averaging just above 10-percent. But Director of state projects for the Tax Foundation, Scott Drenkard, says property taxes are lower than most states thanks to the Homestead Exemption…:

He says when you combine sales, property and income taxes, Louisiana is one of the least tax burdened states.

Those headed to New Orleans this weekend should keep in mind that I-10 eastbound at Highway 61 will be closed tonight at 9 through no later than Monday morning. DOTD says crews are still repairing on a ramp at the Gramercy exit near Sorrento. Alternate routes include taking I-12 to I-55, or Airline Highway to Hwy 641 where you can get back on I-10.

There’s another confederate monument debate brewing in the state…and this time it’s in northwest Louisiana. A citizen advisory committee charged with making a recommendation about the future of the downtown confederate monument in Shreveport, was slated to discuss its relocation last night, but the meeting was adjourned in minutes. The chair of the committee was not happy, and called the move a major attempt to usurp the topic.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise underwent surgery for infection management on Thursday, after he was readmitted to the ICU at MedStar Washington Hospital Center Wednesday. He remains in serious condition.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office says a 14-year-old has died after accidentally shooting himself in the stomach.

It’s hard to believe, but the one year anniversary of the 2016 August floods is just over a month away. So where does the federal grant money stand? Pat Forbes, head of Louisiana’s Office of Community Development, oversees distribution of flood aid…:

He says they have money to help out 36,000 of the hardest hit families.

A Denham Springs couple has discovered a cat suffering from a gunshot wound to the face when the feline walked up to the front door of their home. The Humane Society of Louisiana Executive Director Jeff Dorson says the cat has received medical attention and is getting the care he needs:

MedStar Washington Hospital Center says Congressman Steve Scalise underwent surgery Thursday for the management of infection. The hospital says Scalise tolerated the procedure well and he remains in serious condition. Scalise has been hospitalized since suffering a gunshot wound on June 14th.

The Tax Foundation has updated its national review of sales tax rates and Louisiana continues to rank number one with a combined state and local sales tax rate averaging just above 10-percent. Director of state projects for the Tax Foundation, Scott Drenkard, says Louisiana has one of the highest local sales tax rates in the nation:

A 28-year-old man is now in custody after Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office officials say he killed a 9-month-old infant. Benjamin Joseph Carter Sr. is charged with second degree murder.

A second person has been arrested in a shooting in Evangeline Parish that injured a deputy and resulted in the death of a burglary suspect. Trooper Scott Moreau says the deputy is in stable condition…

Moreau says 27-year-old Dejuan Guillory of Mamou was fatally shot and 21-year-old Dequince Brown of Chruch Point was charged with attempted first degree murder of a police officer. Authorities say Brown was with Guillory during the incident.

State Police is investigating an officer involved shooting that left a man dead and an Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s deputy injured. Michelle Southern reports…:

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s office announces an arrest in the death of a nine-month-old infant. 28-year-old Benjamin Joseph Carter Senior of Hammond has been charged with second-degree murder. An autopsy shows the toddler died from blunt force trauma.

LSU pitcher Eric Walker will not pitch in 2018 as he needs Tommy John Surgery to repair a damaged ligament in his throwing elbow. Recovery time is usually one year. Tiger Rag Associate Editor James Moran says Walker’s injury means there will be three new weekend starters for the 2018 season….

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Agents arrested five boaters for allegedly operating their vessel while intoxicated during their Operation Dry Water Weekend. An Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Deputy has been injured and one man is dead after an officer involved shooting in Mamou. State Police Trooper Scott Moreau says the deputy was called to investigate an attempted burglary when an altercation took place between the officer and 27-year-old Dejuan Guillory and Guillory was shot.

Guillory was pronounced dead at the scene.

A two-year-old boy from Lockport drowned at a 4th of July celebration. Lt. Brennan Matherne with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to a call of a child found unresponsive in a pool. He says Kevin Cortez’s mother last saw him playing with other kids inside the home.

Cortez was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

LSU Baseball Coach Paul Mainieri announced today that pitcher Eric Walker will undergo surgery for a tear in his right elbow which means he’ll miss all of next season. Walker tried to pitch in a game in Omaha, but left in the third inning, because he felt pain reach his elbow. Tiger Rag Associate Editor James Moran says this surgery was inevitable..:

A 27-year-old Mamou man is dead following an officer-involved shooting. State Police is investigating the case of an Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s deputy who was apparently involved in a confrontation with Dejuan Guillory during an attempted robbery investigation. The man was killed and the deputy injured.
