The State Fire Marshal’s office continues to investigate the explosion at the Proctor and Gamble plant in Pineville claimed the life of a Jena man.  Spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue says investigators have confirmed that a smaller scale explosion did occur.

Law enforcement will be ramping up their Click it Or Ticket seatbelt awareness and ticketing campaign over the Memorial Day weekend, to remind drivers about road safety. Louisiana Highway Safety Commission Spokesperson Mark Lambert says  the holiday weekend would be a great time to start a potentially lifesaving behavior change.

Four days into the special session and there’s only been one significant piece legislation that has made it to the House floor that could significantly reduce the budget gap. The measure would result in consumers paying a state sales tax of 4.3 percent after July 1st and it’s expected to generate 370-million dollars in revenue, but the shortfall is pegged at 648-million. Public Affairs Research Council President Robert Travis Scott says the bill is the best opportunity at reducing the proposed cuts within state government….

But it’s unclear if this legislation has the 70 votes to get full House approval.

Subtropical storm Alberto has formed near the Yucatan Peninsula and the five day forecast has southeast Louisiana in the cone of uncertainity for landfall early next week. Phil Grigsby is with the National Weather Service in Slidell and he says heavy rainfall is Alberto’s main threat….

The first named storm of the season has developed and he could be on his way to Louisiana. Jeff Palermo has more.

An explosion at the Proctor and Gambling manufacturing plant in Alexandria claimed the life of a Jena man. The incident occurred around 3AM and involved a forklift. Fire Marshal Spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue says the explosion was contained to the incident area.

Alberto is expected to develop into a tropical storm, and could put Memorial Day weekend plans at risk for folks across the gulf coast. The National Hurricane Center says Subtropical storm Alberto has formed in the Caribbean and the first advisory shows it will develop into a tropical storm later today. The current five-day forecast shows Alberto as a Tropical Storm on Monday morning and very close to the coast of southeastern Louisiana.

The first tax proposal of the special session is heading to the House floor as the Ways and Means committee approved a bill that keeps a third of an expiring one-cent sales tax on the books through 2023 and also some sales tax exemptions would be removed. It would produce 370-million dollars in revenue the state currently doesn’t have after July 1st, but that’s not enough to fill the entire 648-million dollar shortfall. Alexandria Representative Lance Harris says that’s okay, because the legislature can make cuts within the budget to close the rest of the deficit….

That’s Doctor Rhonda Randall with the United Health Foundation, who says social isolation refers to the number of seniors who are living alone, in poverty or having a difficult time living independently.

The man killed in a fatal explosion at the Procter and Gamble plant in Pineville has been identified as 56-year-old Allen Kendrick of Jena. The State Fire Marshal’s office says Kendrick was operating a piece of equipment that exploded and caught fire early Thursday morning.
