The coldest temperatures of the fall have arrived and that could result in an increase in home fires. The American Red Cross says heating sources are the second leading cause of home fire deaths, and fatal home fires increase in the winter months. State Fire Marshal Butch Browning says if you use a space heater, make sure there’s a three feet area of space around it…

Browning says it’s also important to turn off space heaters before you go to bed and never use a cooking range or oven to heat your home

______________________________________

As a result of the mid-term elections, the Republican Party now has control of both the US House and Senate. The question now is, “What will the GOP do now?” UL-Lafayette Political Science Professor Pearson Cross says one issue is clearly at the top of the list…

Cut 4  (11)  “target number one”

Cross thinks reigning in the EPA, immigration, and the Keystone Pipeline are other issues on their agenda. He says many Republicans running in the mid-terms found it sufficient to run against President Obama rather than on a platform of things the party wanted to do. He says, now that they’ve seized control of both houses of Congress, that won’t be enough…

Cut 5  (10)  “to stop him”

Although the GOP has a majority in both the House and Senate, they do not have enough to override a Presidential Veto. Cross says if the Republicans want to get their policies passed into law, they will have to have a two-thirds vote supporting their issues…

According to new data released by the Centers for Disease Control, Baton Rouge has moved from #1 to #2 in new rankings of AIDS cases. The Capital City dropped behind Atlanta after having the highest rate in the country according to the CDC. Reverend AJ Johnson, CEO and Founder of the Baton Rouges AIDS society, says this is not a significant drop…:

CUT 7 (11)  “to last place”

The data, which is based on 2012 numbers, indicates there were 27.5 AIDS cases per 100,000 people down from 29.4 the year prior. Johnson says there is a massive lack of education on this matter in the area and not enough people getting tested…:

Cut 8 (10)   “refusing to talk about it”

The CDC says New Orleans was ranked fourth in the nation. Johnson says local HIV/AIDS organizations are working hard to continue to educate people about the disease and encouraging them to get tested. He says nobody can hide from HIV…:

Cut 10 (09)  “to pay the bills”

Commissioner of Administration Kristy Nichols said in a statement that there is a hiring freeze in place and if additional reductions need to be made at the mid-year point then it will happen to make sure a balanced budget is in place. Kennedy says at the end of October our revenue was supposed to be up 4.4% but that hasn’t happened…:

The Revenue estimating conference is meeting Friday and Kennedy says changes need to be made otherwise mid-year budget cuts could do further damage to higher education. Cut 16  (11)  “all cylinders”

Both teams come into the game with injuries at the quarterback position. McNeese Daniel Sams has a thumb injury and is questionable for Saturday, while S-L-U’s Bryan Bennett has a foot injury. Roberts is optimistic Bennett can play, but also knows injuries are part of the game

LSU threw for only 76 yards in the loss to Alabama and the Tigers rank next to last in the Southeastern Conference in passing yards per game. So should there be a change at quarterback? Cut 19 (08)   “getting it done”

Harris started the Auburn game, but did not play well and hasn’t seen much of the field since. Stewart says Jennings has done well protecting the football, but after scoring just 23 points in the last two games, more playing time for Harris would not be a bad thing this Saturday…
