Seafood festival organizers are taking a more proactive approach amid a new state law that requires restaurants and vendors to clearly indicate whether the seafood they sell is imported. Last weekend, a vendor at the Louisiana Crawfish Festival in Chalmette was caught selling crawfish imported from China without a sign at the booth. Organizer Cisco Gonzales says it’s possible that it was an honest oversight by a vendor who didn’t know about the new law.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agents have cited an Abbeville man for allegedly killing a black bear in Vermilion Parish. Corporal Derek Logan says 50-year-old Shannon Parker shot the 10-year-old female weighing 200 pounds.

The president of Ascension Parish is hailing the upcoming construction of Hyundai’s new steel mill. President Clint Cointment (QUINT-maw) says the new 5.8-billion-dollar steel mill will have a huge impact on the entire region.

The LSU women’s basketball team looked like one of the best teams in the nation last night as they outscored Florida State 31-6 in the third quarter as they blew out the Seminoles 101-71 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. We’re getting details of exactly what went on in the execution chamber as Jessie Hoffman was being put to death. Andrew Greenstein reports.

Hoffman was convicted of kidnapping, rape, and murder of Molly Elliot, and her husband Andy Elliot said, “There is relief that this long nightmare is over bus also renewed grief for Molly and sadness for Mr. Hoffman’s family.”

A Washington Parish mother faces a first-degree murder charge after her 8-month-old infant died from severe injuries, including broken bones. The investigation began last Wednesday when the infant was brought to a hospital and later died from the injuries. Franklinton Police Chief Justin Brown described the case as “absolutely heartbreaking” and extended condolences to the family.

McNeese State men’s basketball coach Will Wade will reportedly leave Lake Charles to be the next head coach at North Carolina State. Wade has won 57 games and two Southland Conference Championships at McNeese over the last two seasons. He’s led the Cowboys to the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back seasons. The former LSU coach says he’s been transparent with his players about his future…

Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser and the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board held the 8th Annual Pardoning of the Crawfish at Parc des Ponts Breaux in Breaux Bridge. Sherbin the Crawfish, named after Henderson Mayor Sherbin Collette, was pardoned and released into Lake Fausse Point State Park to celebrate Louisiana’s seafood culture.

We’re learning new information on the death of a Southern University student. Andrew Greenstein reports.

A 19-year-old Shreveport man, Christian D. Efferson, turned himself in after allegedly stealing a car during a test drive in Slagle. He drove off from a gas station, leaving the seller behind. Another person fled in their vehicle. The stolen car was later recovered. Efferson faces a $20,000 bond.

A Doyline couple faces 72 counts of aggravated animal cruelty after deputies linked her to the abandonment of over 12 dogs on Dement Road. 58-year-old Kimberly Crowley and 68-year-old Alan Crowley were arrested at her mobile home.  The abandoned dogs were captured and taken to a veterinarian before being placed with a rescue group. Deputies ensured the remaining animals at Crowley’s home received food and water, with LaMa Rescue stepping in to assist. Parker says it’s a bad situation.

The good news – it’s crawfish season. The bad news – it’s crawfish theft season. And crawfish harvesters are working diligently to prevent thieves from making off with their hauls. Paul Zaunbrecher, a crawfish farmer in Acadia Parish, says the best way to stop crawfish theft is not to leave their sacks unattended.

A Doyline woman faces 72 counts of aggravated animal cruelty after deputies linked her to the abandonment of over 12 dogs on Dement Road. 58-year-old Kimberly Crowley was arrested at her mobile home, where authorities found about 60 more dogs living in inhumane conditions. Some were confined in overcrowded cages without food or water. Webster Sheriff Jason Parker says Crowley was not licensed and selling dogs online

Baton Rouge Police gave an update on the death of Southern University student Caleb Wilson. Chief Thomas Morse says investigators now have a clear picture of how the 20-year-old student and Human Jukebox member died.

A new poll suggests that Bill Cassidy’s re-election bid could be a tough one. Andrew Greenstein reports.

Lafayette Renaissance Charter High School mourns the loss of Alaya Christian, a dedicated student and victim of Mamou’s Mardi Gras mass shooting. Christian was involved in many school activities, including softball, student council, and football training. The school community is heartbroken and extends condolences to her family and friends.

Louisiana’s small business owners are urging legislators to address rising insurance costs through legal reforms in the upcoming legislative session starting April 14. NFIB State Director Leah Long says the NFIB supports legislation that would place medical damages in a trust to prevent excessive costs, cap non-economic damages at 750-thousand dollars for predictability, and bar individuals more than 50-percent at fault from recovering damages to reduce frivolous claims.

DOTD is working to implement its strategic improvement plan. Secretary Joe Donahue says the department identified a few deficiencies in its operation – among them is the inability to deliver projects on schedule.

NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick says Governor Jeff Landry’s emergency declaration following the Bourbon Street attack allowed for more federal resources that helped make sure Mardi Gras was safe.

With the help of former Dateline NBC correspondent Chris Hansen, the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested 11 men in a recent online solicitation sting. Hansen says what’s especially scary is that many people arrested were everyday people, some working in positions in which they were routinely around children.

At least two people are reportedly dead and many more were injured from gunfire during a Mardi Gras celebration in the Evangeline Parish town of Mamou. Shots were fired when musician Chris Ardoin was performing at the Mamou Mardi Gras Zydeco concert. Ardoin went on Facebook to say he was previously shot in 2021 while performing at the Louisiana Mudfest in Grant Parish, which is also outdoors. Ardoin doesn’t understand why something like this would happen…

An Oil City man was arrested at Northwood High School after allegedly threatening and attacking a school resource officer with an umbrella.  Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office Lt. Breck Scott Scott emphasized when schools are on lockdown its for security purposes to protect students and faculty.

Hansen hosted a segment on Dateline NBC called “To Catch A Predator” from 2004 to 2007, during which he confronted dozens of men who showed up at a house thinking that they were meeting a teenage boy or girl for sex. He says he thought people would catch on after the first couple segments, but they didn’t – and they haven’t.

Today, the concept is the focus of Hansen’s web series, “TakeDown with Chris Hansen,” which streams on the TruBlu streaming service that he co-founded. As for the suspects in this sting operation, all 11 are charged with felonies; three were found to be in the country illegally and have ICE holds on them.

An Oil City man was arrested at Northwood High School after allegedly threatening and attacking a school resource officer with an umbrella.  Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office Lt. Breck Scott says 70-year-old Gary Fenner arrived at the school around 9 a.m. to pick up his grandchild but was denied access due to a tornado-related lockdown.

Scott says Fenner got up and attempted to fight. Nunnery and a school security officer subdued and arrested him. Fenner faces multiple charges, including battery of a peace officer and  resisting arrest. Scott says this isn’t the first time encountering Fenner.

Scott emphasized when schools are on lockdown its for security purposes to protect students and faculty.

A crash in St. Landry Parish claimed the life of an unborn child. It happened just before eight yesterday morning on U.S. Highway 190 at Louisiana Highway 743. State Police say an 18-wheeler being driven by 51-year-old Albert Jenkins of Lafayette  was traveling south on 743. At the same time, a 2024 Kia Seltos was heading west on 190.

Bourque says the Kia’s driver, who was pregnant and properly restrained, suffered critical injuries.

A toxicology sample was taken from Jenkins for analysis, and the crash remains under investigation. Bourque urge drivers to always yield properly and check for oncoming traffic to prevent such tragedies.

Congresswoman Julia Letlow and Congressman Clay Higgins are asking the White House to impose tariffs of up to 100-percent on rice imports from five countries – India, Thailand, China, Pakistan and Vietnam. Letlow says the U.S.’ rice industry is being displaced by heavily subsidized rice from those countries.

Letlow says these tariffs are especially important in protecting Louisiana rice producers.

Letlow’s and Higgins’ letter comes just as Iraq had purchased 88-thousand metric tons of U.S. rice, completing its commitment in a 2024-25 memorandum of understanding.

Dr. Mark Johnson has been elected as the 10th president of Louisiana Christian University (LCU). The Board of Trustees approved his appointment based on the recommendation of the presidential search committee, which conducted an independent and transparent selection process.  Vice Chairman of the Search Committee Tommy Kiker says it was a nationwide search.

Johnson, formerly the director of the Doctor of Ministry program at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, views his presidency as a divine calling. Public sector workers will start seeing bigger Social Security benefit payments. Senator Bill Cassidy worked to get the windfall elimination provision and the government pension offset repealed in the last session as part of the Social Security Fairness Act, and he delivered the good news to those workers – with something a little extra.

Cassidy said this is great news for all public sector workers hurt by WEP and G-P-O, especially the thousands in Louisiana.

A new poll is an encouraging sign for Senator Bill Cassidy’s re-election bid. A new Morning Consult poll shows that Cassidy has a 69-percent approval rating among Republicans, including a 64-percent approval rating from those who identify themselves as conservative. Pollster Bernie Pinsonat says one catalyst behind those numbers is Cassidy’s support of President Trump and his agenda, including his cabinet nominees like Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Four years ago, Cassidy was one of seven Senate Republicans who voted to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial in the wake of the January 6th riot at the Capitol. Pinsonat said had he voted against Kennedy’s nomination for Secretary of Health and Human Services, not only would that have sunk his nomination, but it would have also likely ended any chance of him getting re-elected.

St. Tammany Parish deputies arrested three suspected meth dealers in two days. On Feb. 11, Henry Gaines, 30, was stopped for traffic violations, and a K-9 unit found half a pound of meth. The next day, a search at Gary Armond Jr. and Paula Jacobson’s home uncovered over a pound of meth, pills, and paraphernalia.
