Hundreds of cancer patients and survivors around the country are in Washington D.C. today to urge Congress to help with the fight against cancer. Louisiana Lead Ambassador with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network Amber Stevens says they will ask lawmakers to increase federal funding for cancer research…:

Stevens says they are also asking to raise the funding for cancer research to 36 billion dollars, a two billion dollar increase.

The Louisiana National Guard soldiers originally scheduled to Florida to help with recovery from Hurricane Irma, have been ordered to stand down. The 922 Engineering company was to be deployed to help with technical issues and clearing roads was told their help, while appreciated, is no longer needed after Florida officials completed a more comprehensive assessment of the damage.

The mayor has pledged to commit up to $30 million dollars to build the complex subject to city council approval.

Saints fans are down in the dumps today, as New Orleans struggled in a Monday Night Football loss to the Vikings. The Black and Gold had trouble scoring touchdowns after getting into the redzone, and quarterback Drew Brees threw for just 291 yards and one TD. So for the fifth time in the last six years, the Saints start the season with a loss. They host the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots on Sunday.

16 years ago, Louisianans donated money to purchase a new firetruck for the New York City following 9-11. It was enough to build four new trucks at Ferrera Fire Apparatus in Livingston Parish. Former owner, Chris Ferrera says one truck was actually sent to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and is currently in use by the Louisiana Fire Marshal’s Office…:

Nicholls State Wide Receiver Damion Jeanpiere has been named Southland Offensive Player of the Week. Jeanpiere had five catches for 174 yards as the Colonels nearly upset Texas A&M on Saturday.

Grambling’s Martez Carter had 206 yards of total offense in the Tigers 23-10 win over Northwestern State and the senior from Monroe was named as the SWAC offensive player of the week. Carter had 138 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.

The statistical peak off hurricane season is behind us, and State Climatologist Barry Keim says it’s likely we will exceed earlier predictions. But he says right now, it looks as if things are calming down compared to last week…:

The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness is deploying crews to help with response efforts from Hurricanes Irma and Harvey. A Christmas Tree farm in St. Tammany Parish has been hit by vandals for the about the 20th time, and the owner is not happy. Clarke Gernon heads up Shady Pond Tree Farm in Pearl River and says nobody has ever been caught destroying the trees..:

He says it’s been difficult for him to express to law enforcement the idea that these are more than just trees.

Thibodaux Police have arrested a man who they found passed out behind the wheel in the drive-through of a restaurant. They say 37-year-old John Sewell Jr allegedly tried to drive off when cops woke him up, but his key had already been removed by officers. The man apparently told detectives he was tired and high. He was booked for Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Kaplan Police Chief Boyd Adams is under arrest for allegedly stealing money from the department. State Police allege Adams used nearly $7000 in funds for himself.

For the nearly 20th time, a Christmas tree farm in St. Tammany parish has been vandalized. Clarke Gernon, the owner of Shady Pond Tree Farm in Pearl River says it’s very difficult to put up aan effective security system on a 50 acre farm. He says 9 trees were destroyed over the Labor Day Weekend and that’s a lot when the overall inventory is 14-thousand.

The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness is deploying employees and coordinating assistance from other state agencies for Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Harvey response and recovery efforts. GOHSEP spokesman Mike Steele says there is a wide range of needs right now in Florida and Georgia, and ongoing cleanup in Texas, and the state is happy to help.:

Steele says the state-to-state system was developed after Hurricane Andrew in 1992. He says Louisiana has a lot of experience in what to do after a storm hits…:
