An arrest has been made in connection to the double homicide that happened on the campus of Grambling State University. The Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s office says Jaylin Wayne faces first-degree murder charges.

It’s the talk of Eunice. A Powerball ticket worth 191 million dollars has been sold in the St. Landry Parish town and everyone is trying to figure out who won. Mayor Scott Fontenot says he found out about this just like everyone else…:

Cooking for crowds greatly complicates food safety as nearly 200 people found out after a bad batch of Jambalaya was served in Caldwell Parish about two weeks ago. LSU AgCenter food safety expert Wenqing(When-sheing)  Xu (Shu) says usually we cook for our families, which is around 6 people on a regular basis but during big events hundreds of people are served.

The State Fair of Louisiana and the Louisiana Seafood Festival take place this weekend, where large batches of food will be served. Xu says food borne pathogens naturally exist on raw foods, but if you cook thoroughly, they shouldn’t be a problem.

Xu says it’s important to wash your hands before cooking and then cook meats to the proper temperature by using a food thermometer and it’s also necessary to keep raw meat chilled until use. She advises anyone cooking for a large group to attend her food safety workshop.

The University of Louisiana at Monroe now has a Doppler weather radar, helping to bridge a gap in identifying severe storms in northeast Louisiana.  ULM received a 3-million-dollar grant through the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness to acquire a radar to assist weather forecasters.  Assistant Professor of Atmospheric Science Todd Murphy says…

President Trump has declared a public health emergency on the growing opioid crisis, calling it a “national shame” and “human tragedy.”  He indicated he intends to file a lawsuit against opioid manufactures, something Governor Edwards did last month.  Chief of Staff for the Louisiana Department of Health Andrew Tuozzolo says a state law passed this year is working to reduce opioid addictions…

The CDC reports Louisiana is one of 20 states with a significant increase in opioid deaths with 478 fatal drug overdoses in 2014.  Tuozzolo says parish coroners are helping the state to determine where most fatal opioid overdose deaths are occurring…

This public health emergency will allow for the prescribing of medicine commonly used to treat substance abuse.  Tuzzolo says a particular nasal spray is an effective and valuable tool for someone who has overdosed…

Nearly 25 percent of the new jobs in the state were related to tourism.  Over six-thousand new travel related jobs were created in the last 12 months, based on data from the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics. President Trump’s declaration against the opioid crisis today helps the state choose how they will use future federal funds to fight a problem that increased by 12 percent in 2015 alone.  Governor Edwards has sued opioid manufactures and Trump has said he would like to do the same, calling it a national crisis.  The declaration will help mobilize additional federal resources for states.

Someone in Eunice hit the Powerball jackpot when they bought a ticket worth 1919 million dollars. Louisiana Lottery Spokesperson Kim Chopin says the winning ticket was sold at Brownie’s on West Maple Ave. She says the Louisiana Lottery gives the store a bonus for selling jackpot winning tickets.

Chopin says if the winner decides to take the cash value of the jackpot, they will receive 119-million dollars.

Police say the man who murdered a woman in Pineville last week is the same person who allegedly killed and burned two people in a ditch off Old Boyce Road the same day. Rapides Sheriff William Hilton says Matthew Sonnier faces multiple charges of first degree murder and his sister was also arrested. He says Ebony Sonnier’s charges could result in the death penalty for the death of the two men found burned in a ditch.

The Board of Regents is requesting 192 million dollars more in state funding for public colleges in 2018. The money would go straight to the four college systems as they suffered budget cuts for years. It’s unlikely the request will be granted by lawmakers or Governor Edwards because the legislature is still looking at how to stop from falling off a 1 billion dollar fiscal cliff.

Grambling State University is still reeling from a shooting early Wednesday which left a student and his friend dead.  A student was shot in a separate incident last month.  Grambling President Rick Gallot says Grambling is a gun free zone and residential life works hard to keep on campus housing as safe as possible.
