Schedler says this is still an alarming low voter turnout. He says about 69-percent of voters in the Bayou State cast a ballot last year in the presidential election, higher than the national average.

Aside from the statewide State Treasurer’s election, the New Orleans mayoral race is also on the ballot. Schedler says voters in the Crescent City made up 19-percent of the state’s turnout to put LaToya Contrell and Desiree Charbonnet in the runoff.

Sexton says he’s been painting fields since he was a kid, and to be able to work full time for LSU is a huge honor. He says he records the games at home, and goes back and watches every play to see how the eye looks…:

Sexton says the entire process of getting the field ready for the games takes about two hours. He says you have to paint white and purple first, wait on those to dry and then finish up with the gold…:

West Feliciana Sheriff Austin Daniel says an investigation started when it was observed a 13-year and an inmate walked out of a bathroom together. Daniel says they are not sure why the two were in bathroom together, but there is no evidence that sexual contact occurred…

Angola Warden Darrel Vannoy is upset that WBRZ accused him of covering up a rape…

Vannoy said that they are still investigating why the prisoner, Laderrick Davis and minor were in the bathroom together.  Davis was transferred to another prison for his safety following the news report.  The DOC is reviewing policies surrounding the annual Angola Rodeo.

An LSUs fraternity pledge died after consuming a large amount of alcohol during a suspected hazing ritual in September. Alexander says university leaders can come up with more policies to avoid these type of tragic events, but the students need to be a partner in this effort too…

Four LSU fraternities have been suspended or closed since Gruver’s death. Edwards says he’s impressed with the anti-hazing policies already in place at Louisiana universities, but they could do better

A woman allegedly suspected of texting before a fatal accident on I-12 that killed a 5 month old child, turned herself into Denham Springs police today. Police say 23-year-old Jessica Cowart slammed into a vehicle, which hit another one, throwing five-month-old Reese Graham and her car seat through the front window.  Reese died two days later.  Denham Springs police Detective Amber Fairburn says speed was also a factor in the accident…

Cowart is free on a 51-thousand-dollar bond.

The Kenner Police Department says a habitual offender that was released early from jail due to the state’s new criminal justice reform, committed an armed robbery 5 days after he was let out. Chief Michael Glaser says it’s extremely frustrating that Tyrone White was let back on the streets:

Public Safety and Corrections Secretary James LeBlanc in a news release says it’s sad that White squandered that opportunity at becoming a part of society.

A Truth Initiative report finds Louisiana youth are smoking at a lower rate than the national average.  But, the adult smoking rate in Louisiana is over 22-percent, compared to 15 in the rest of the country.  President and CEO of Truth Initiative Robin Koval says the Bayou State is making some strides in the right direction, with more parishes approving ordinances to ban smoking in all public buildings.

A Denham Springs woman turned herself into police today after being suspected of texting before a fatal crash on I-12 that killed a 5-month-old baby. Denham Springs Police issued an arrest warrant for 23-year-old Jessica Cowart. Detective Amber Fairburn says Cowart was not completely focused on the road with the wreck happened.

Cowart is charged with negligent homicide, negligent injuring and reckless operation.  She is free on a 51-thousand-dollar-bond.

A woman from Franklin is also under arrest in a crash that killed a toddler. 27-year-old Grave Loustaloot was driving with three children in the car on Hwy 83 in St. Mary Parish yesterday morning. State Police Master Trooper Brooks David explains the wreck.

Louisiana youth are smoking at a rate of 12-percent, which is lower than the national average of 16-percent, according to a report by Truth Initiative. President and CEO Robin Koval says when teenagers are given the facts and allowed to make their own decisions, they are more likely to positively respond.

But the adult smoking rate in Louisiana is over 22-percent, compared to 15 in the rest of the country.

A Franklin woman is under arrest for a crash that claimed the life of a toddler. The single vehicle wreck occurred on Highway 83 in St. Mary Parish Wednesday morning.  27-year-old Grace Loustaloot was driving with three children in the vehicle when the accident occurred.  2-year-old Temperence Finister was not secured and was thrown from the car after it rolled over.  LSP’s Master Trooper Brooks David says upon arrival, they allegedly found prescription drugs in Loustaloot’s possession, which may have played a factor in the fatal accident…

A Franklin woman has been arrested in connection with an accident in St Mary Parish that killed a toddler.  27-year-old Grace Loustaloot was the driver of the vehicle than ran off the roadway and overturned in a ditch.  Two-year-old Temperence Finster was not properly restrained and was ejected.  Loustaloot is charged with vehicular homicide, two counts of first degree vehicular negligent injuring and possession of narcotics.

 

Three state police troopers have been placed on paid administrative leave amid allegations of claiming overtime on hours they never actually worked.  State Police Major Doug Cain says the investigation started after surveillance video was uncovered by a New Orleans television station.  He says Col. Kevin Reeves has asked for a full investigation…
