The New Orleans Saints beat the Atlanta Falcons 23-13 in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Sunday. Quarterback Drew Brees was 21-of-28 for 239 yards and a touchdown. He also threw an interception in the game. Mark Ingram led the Saints on the ground with 44 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. New Orleans now needs to win in Tampa next week or the Panthers must lose in Atlanta in order for the black and gold to clinch the division.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries’ December Aerial Waterfowl Survey shows a major migration of birds, over three million compared to just over one a half million last month. Waterfowl Program Manager Larry Reynolds says the increase may not be so good for hunters…:

Duck hunting season will go on through mid January in the coastal areas of Louisiana.

It’s a chilly Christmas Day in Louisiana, as State Climatologist Barry Keim says there is a light freeze across northern parishes, and temps in the 30s across most of the state. He says the high this December 25th will only get to the low 40s to mid 50s…:

Keim says while it may become milder late next week, another chill down is expected for the last weekend of 2017. But in the meantime it’s going to be cold like this for the next several days…:

An analysis commissioned by the Pew Charitable Trusts shows that investing in national parks in Louisiana could create over 110 new jobs.  Eight sites in the Bayou State that would benefit.  Director of the Restore America Parks Campaign, Marsha Argust, says most of the work needs to be done on permanent structures in these parks…

Argust says the analysis shows there would be several job skills that would be needed to make the parks safer and positively impact visitor access…

The National Park System passed an important milestone celebrating their 100th anniversary last year.  Argust says it’s sad that many of the parks are showing their age, since there hasn’t been a complete rehabilitation of the sites in over 60 years.  Declining financial support has been a problem…

The extremes in weather in Louisiana this past month with temperatures approaching 80 degrees and then a freak snowstorm that dumped as much as six inches in Southeast Louisiana had an effect on the waterfowl population.  Reynolds says it makes ducks more migratory than usual…

Typically, waterfowl enjoy the mild Louisiana weather.  He says if the weather levels out, ducks will remain for quite a while…

Governor John Bel Edwards released a statement about the latest unemployment number ahead of the holiday weekend; noting that the last time it was just 4.7 percent was in May of 2008. He says this is great news heading into 2018 where he’s optimistic about seeing compromise on the state’s budget woes…:

It will feel a lot like Christmas as a cold front will bring more seasonable temperatures to Louisiana. After experiencing highs near 80 in parts of the state last week, State Climatologist Barry Keim says a strong cold front will usher in colder air starting today…:

He says we could see frost on the ground Christmas morning.

With holiday parties and shindigs in full swing, food borne illnesses become more frequent. There are several ways people could become sick. Louisiana Ag Commissioner Mike Strain says sometime people forget to use separate cutting boards, but he says it’s vital to make sure you stay well…:

Strain says you should always allow enough time to defrost any meat and poultry.

It’s official. One of the top high school prospects in the nation has committed to LSU. Parkway High School standout wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. shed a few tears as he donned the purple and gold cap. With Marshall, LSU should have a top ten recruiting class this spring. Alabama, Florida State, Texas and Texas A&M were the other schools Marshall considered. The Tigers ended the three day signing period with a total of 21 commitments, leaving four spots open.

Today, the last Saturday before Christmas, is known as Super Saturday – a day for last minute shoppers to pick up those gifts by the December 25th deadline. LSU Marketing Professor Dan Rice says it’s a big day for brick and mortar stores because it’s too late for online shopping…:

About 126 million people, or 53 percent of consumers, plan to shop today, according to a report from the National Retail Federation.

Employees at Monroe-based CenturyLink were reportedly told this week that they won’t be getting a holiday bonus as they have before. Yahoo Finance reports that CenturyLink CEO Glen Post sent out an email to the company and said they still have to make progress in stabilizing and growing cash flow, because overall operating results this year were well below expectations. Yahoo reports CenturyLink declined to comment.

A sweltering week looks to be over, and once the state got some rain out of the way, forecasters say we can expect much cooler temperatures to move in just in time for Christmas. Temps will be in the low to mid 50s by this afternoon. State Climatologist Barry Keim says frigid temperatures are in store for Christmas Eve night on into Christmas Day…:

NORAD says conditions will be perfect for Santa’s big journey tomorrow night.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Slidell area man for terrorizing after he made threats against a local church. Once detectives felt like they had enough evidence to secure an arrest warrant for 37-year-old Dusty Gerchow, they went to his home and found a huge supply of guns, ammunition and body armor. He allegedly made threats to kill a member of the Open Arms Ministries congregation.

LSU football landed a huge signee Friday who waited until the last minute to announce he’d decided to officially become a Tiger. It’s Terrace Marshall, the top-ranked receiver in the nation out of Parkway high who has been a long-time LSU commitment. Marshall is the top-ranked player in Louisiana, a top 15 overall prospect and number one in the US at his position. The Tigers ended the three day signing period with a total of 21 commitments, leaving four spots open.

Last night in the PMAC, the LSU men’s basketball team dominated North Florida 104-52 — the largest win for coach the program since 2006. The Tigers were lead offensively by Duop Reath and Tremont Waters who each had 15 points. LSU’s next game in Baton Rouge will be on January 3rd against Kentucky to open SEC play for the Tigers.

Elsewhere in men’s hoops, Louisiana Tech topped Fort Wayne 85-76, and UL-Lafayette beat Clemson 89-60. Today Nicholls State is at Seattle.

The Saints and Falcons will meet for the 97th time Sunday when the two long-time rivals square off in the Superdome. New Orleans is 10-4, and the NFC South is extremely competitive with three teams fighting for playoff spots. Atlanta is 9-5, and the Panthers at 10-4. Head Coach Sean Payton normally doesn’t discuss playoffs during the regular season, but he broke character a bit Friday…:

The Magic was no match for the Pelicans Big 3 last night as New Orleans topped Orlando 111-97. The Pels never trailed in the victory in a game that saw Demarcus Cousins pick up 26 points and 11 rebounds, 24 points for Jrue Holiday, and 20 on the board from Anthony Davis.

The names of two people killed in a house fire in Bastop have been released.  The victims are56-year-old Margene Williams and her grandson, 8-year-old Samarion Galvin.  The fire started in the living room, but there were no working smoke detectors in the home at the time.  Two others inside the home escaped, were treated at a hospital and released.

There’s an extra special bonfire to be lit this Christmas Eve along the Mississippi River levee in St. John the Baptist Parish that’s getting national attention.  A massive alligator snapping turtle that actually moves was created by Josh Weidert of Garyville.   He’s been building bonfires since he was 11-years-old and says the tradition has been a long standing one in his family. It fascinated him as a kid to watch the the smoke and fog fill the river and watch out for Papa Noel…:

Ag Commissioner Mike Strain says his department is responsible for making sure all animals brought into the state don’t pose any health threats to other animals in Louisiana.  Strain says he has the privilege of permitting a very special herd of animals in the state this holiday season…

A lawyer for a vet who allegedly killed her neighbor’s dog says there isn’t any evidence against his client.  Bob Garrity representing 35-year-old Kelly Folse tells the Advocate deputies tried to force a confession out of the River Ridge vet.  Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto says Folse was arrested after finding probable cause in the shooting of the dog “Bruiser” after she became upset with his constant barking…

The game kicks off Sunday at 12 noon on FOX.

The Pelicans have a chance to snap their two-game losing streak tonight when they visit the Orlando Magic. New Orleans lost to the Magic earlier this season 115 to 99. Orlando is currently on a six-game losing streak and they have the third worst record in the Eastern Conference.

The LSU basketball team hosts North Florida tonight at the PMAC. U-N-F will start four sophomores and a freshman tonight as they bring a 5-and-9 record to the PMAC. The 7-and-3 Tigers are coming off a 22-point win over Sam Houston State.

Funeral servies are today for Louisiana Sports Hall of Famer Charlie Hennigan, who still holds two NFL receiving records. Hennigan starred for the Houston Oilers in the 1960s after a standout career at Northwestern State, where he excelled in both football and track. He still holds NFL records with three games of at least 200 yards receiving in a season and he also had seven straight games of at least 100 yards receiving in 1961.

Bart Thompson has been hired as the new LSU Police Chief.   Thompson has served as interim chief since June.  He didn’t have a college degree, which was a requirement for the job, but LSU dropped the degree requirement, allowing Thompson eligible to apply.  26 people applied for the position.
