The governor’s plan includes allowing the fifth penny of the state sales tax to expire, but remove sales tax exemptions businesses enjoy. If the two parties don’t come to an agreement before the end of an expected February special session, the governor would be forced to submit a balanced budget reflecting a one billion dollar cut in state spending, most of which would target healthcare and education.

House fires statewide have claimed 16 lives since Christmas according to State Fire Marshal Butch Browning.  This morning, Baton Rouge firefighters battled a blaze that killed a grandmother and two grandchildren.  Browning says space heaters are the cause of many of these fires…

East Baton Rouge sheriff deputies arrested a 29-year-old man after he allegedly stabbed his wife and three children with a knife. Sheriff’s office spokesperson Casey Rayborn Hicks says they expect to book Dung Van Tran into the parish jail today after he receives medical treatment after he tried to stab himself also. He is facing several charges…

A deadly house fire kills four people early this morning in Baton Rouge.  The Baton Rouge Fire Department responded to the home on Iroquios Street.  Two others, a five and a 19-year-old were taken to a hospital.  Ten have now died in East Baton Rouge Parish so far this year in house fires.  Three victims were killed in a Zachary house fire late Wednesday night.

The cold weather that has gripped the state since New Year’s will begin lessening today.  The state is seeing an increase in house fires and shattered pipes because of the cold weather. State Climatologist Barry Keim says it will all be a memory soon…

A deadly house fire kills four people early this morning in Baton Rouge.  The Baton Rouge Fire Department responded to the home on Iroquios Street.  Two others, a five and a 19-year-old were taken to a hospital.  Officials say a friend sleeping at the home woke up on fire and ran next door to get help.

The polar vortex is projected to retreat back north this weekend. Jeff Palermo has more.

The Discovery Channel has signed “Out Da’ Bayou” for 13 episodes after five years on CST and the Sportsman Channel. The federal tax reform bill slashed taxes for a wide swath of different businesses, and after some review the state believes that those tax savings could be passed on to utility customers. Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell says the tax reductions will save some utility companies, such as Entergy and Cleco, hundreds of millions of dollars. Campbell says those savings shouldn’t be stashed…

Campbell anticipates the Public Service Commission will determine rate payers are due a decrease on their bill, do to the millions in savings that ultilities are expecting.

The price of gas is up 4 cents over last week to 2.26 a gallon, it’s highest mark in some time. Increased demand across the country is pushing the price up during the busiest travel season ever recorded. AAA spokesperson Don Redman says the price is high, but should come down shortly…

Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser says the state’s tourism budget is facing a ten percent cut if legislators are unable to resolve the fiscal cliff issues and he’s worried what that will mean for the future of the travel industry.  Nungesser is afraid further cuts will reduce the ability to keep the state park system operating…

After a strong offer by Texas A&M, defensive coordinator Dave Aranda will stay at LSU. Head Coach Ed Orgeron confirmed the news on Twitter last night. Three are under arrest in the alleged shooting death of a man found near Gonzales in Ascension Parish.  The body of 20 year old Francisco Nieves was found in a ditch near a trailer park Tuesday.  Police say the shooting didn’t occur in Gonzales, but happened in Jefferson Parish.  20-year-old Archie Armstrong of Marrero is charged with second degree murder while two others face accessory to second degree murder charges…

As Louisiana tourism enters 2018, there are some glaring concerns as to how to encourage more visitors to come to the Bayou State.  Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser says the state’s tourism budget is facing a ten percent cut if legislators are unable to resolve the fiscal cliff issues.  Plus Nungesser is worried about some of the chronic problems that’s impacting the state’s biggest tourism draw, New Orleans…

Three people are dead following a house fire in Zachary.  The fire broke out around 11pm last night on Highway 19.  Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the deadly blaze.  The identifies are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
