In the NBA, what a night for DeMarcus Cousins and the New Orleans Pelicans. It took two overtimes for the Pels to get a thrilling 132 to 128 win over The Chicago Bulls. Cousins finished with 44 points and 23 rebounds. It was the 5th win in 6 for the Pels, their best six game mark of the season.

Philadelphia’s Doug Pederson is the first person with ties to Louisiana to serve as a head coach in the Super Bowl. Pederson was a head coach at Calvary Baptist in Shreveport from 2004 to 2008, and is also a former ULM quarterback. With the Eagles headed to the big game, another spot became open in next week’s Pro Bowl, and New Orleans right guard Larry Warford is now the 7th Saints player chosen for the game. This ties a team record for the Saints for most Pro Bowlers in franchise history.

The Big 10’s Maryland is reportedly expected to hire former LSU offensive coordinator Matt Canada for the same job.

The U.S. is pumping out over ten-million barrels of oil per day, topping a nearly 50-year record. Forecasts show production could climb to eleven-million barrels a day by the end of 2019. President of the Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association, Chris John, says markets such as China are hungry for more fuel, and Louisiana’s 170 offshore operators are showing they can keep up with demand…:

Cops in LaPlace say a 17-year-old boy has died after being hit by a train last night. The St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office says the as-yet unidentified teen was trying to beat the train and cross the tracks in LaPlace, and didn’t make it.

A retired Baton Rouge firefighter rescued a girl trapped inside a house fire Monday afternoon. Officials say the young girl was trying to run outside when she tripped and fell, just as the retired firefighter, Kevin Scott, was passing by and ran inside to save the girl.

A nationwide non-profit to help veteran’s in their post military transition to the workplace is coming to New Orleans.  NextOp represents veterans by placing them in jobs in industries and companies throughout the region.  Louisiana Regional Manager Ben Armstrong says the Crescent City has a high amount of veterans looking for work who needed assistance…

Armstrong says the challenge for veterans is not in obtaining work, but getting the type of jobs they need to support their families.  He says they’re not unemployed, just “under employed”…

Following their launch on February 1st, they are looking at expanding statewide.  Armstrong says getting in touch with veterans in Louisiana is their top priority…

Entergy Louisiana has broken ground on a new 872-million dollar plant near Lake Charles. The natural gas fired plant is expected to be operational in June of 2020. Entergy spokesperson Michael Burns says the highly-efficient plant will lower energy costs for Entergy customers…

Burns says the state-of-the-art plant is expected to run much cleaner than previous plants. He says greenhouse gas production in particular should be significantly lower…

Entergy projects the project will directly employ over 700 people during peak construction. Burns says the economic benefits will be noticeable…

Governor John Bel Edwards presented what he called his worst-case-scenario budget today, showcasing the impact from a billion dollar loss in state funding and what it would have on state government, The loss is a result of expiring sales taxes. Louisiana requires the governor submit a balanced budget that takes into account projected funding levels. Edwards proposed the budget, but says he doesn’t want it passed…

The governor is proposing an 80-percent cut in TOPS funding, unless legislators can agree on a long-term tax reform plan in a February special session.  Slidell Senator Sharon Hewitt believes more cuts can be made to go along with any kind of tax reform plan…

The federal government is open for business once again.  The House approved the temporary budget that now goes to President Trump for his signature.    4th Congressional District Representative Mike Johnson said in a statement, “Senate Democrats finally came to their senses and stopped using vulnerable children and military personnel as bargaining chips.”  Johnson added the shutdown was quote” completely unnecessary.”  Congress has until Feb 8th to approve a formal budget…

The governor claims he has cut 600 million dollars in state general funds since he took office two years ago. Baton Rouge Representative Rick Edmonds says the governor’s budget is off since he’s not factoring in federal tax reform money…

Edmonds says the state could have an additional 200 to 400 million dollars as a result.

Gas prices are up and so is the economy.  Louisiana drivers are paying an average of 2.36 a gallon, up 15 cents from a month ago.  Triple A fuel analyst Don Redman says demand has slipped some with the unusual winter weather, but the robust economy is keeping prices elevated…

Redman says the high prices in a traditionally slow month for gas consumption could lead to higher prices throughout 2018.

The Caddo Parish Sheriff’s office is trying to identify a man whose pajama-clad body was found on a road next to a bicycle, about 3:45 a.m. They say the man was wearing red pajama pants, a camouflage shirt and brown work boots. Anyone with information about the man is urged to contact the Caddo Sheriff’s Office.

Governor John Bel Edwards is presenting a budget today that shows the effects of one-billion dollars in cuts to state agencies. Healthcare will see a 660-million-dolar cut and there will be an 80-percent cut in funding to TOPS. Political analyst Clancy Dubos says it’s not the budget the governor wants, but it’s the budget he is constitutionally required to present.

Edwards has said he would like to call a February special session to address the fiscal cliff.

25 Democratic women will be trained on how to run for political office.  Emerge Louisiana Executive director Melanie Oubre says with districts to be redrawn following the 2020 census, it’s a great time to have these women trained and ready to tackle the political scene…

A 9.7 million dollar grant was awarded to a UL Lafayette consortium to study the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale oil deposit that stretches across central Louisiana and the Florida parishes.  The consortium will be comprised of scientists, academics, and oil industry professionals from across the nation.  ULL Professor Mehdi Mokhtari (med-e mowk-tari) says this study could raise the prestige of the University of Louisiana system…

Gas prices on the increase.  Louisiana’s average price is up to 2.36 a gallon, up six cents from a week ago and 15 cents from last month.    The cost at the beginning of 2017 was 2.17 a gallon.  Analysts say gas production remains strong at a time of the year when it normally is weak, which could lead to lower prices down the road.
