The House Judiciary Committee failed to advance a bill that would have created an oversight committee for the state’s 41 district attorneys. Nearly every one of the state’s D.A.’s were in attendance this morning as the panel debated the issue for two hours. Heated arguments between lawmakers and those in favor of the bill. The police officer who shot and killed Alton Sterling during a struggle has appealed his firing. Attorney John McLindon filed the appeal to a local civil service board on behalf of Blane Salamoni. McLindon says he’s heard from police officers around the country that Salamoni’s firing was unjust

36-year-old Jonhathan Robinson is facing second-degree-murder and felon in possession of a firearm charges after allegedly killing 27-year-old Rannita Williams while she was on Facebook Live. After Robinson was put in custody at the Shreveport city jail, Crump says he became violent again, breaking a water pipe, flooding his jail cell…

The AP says House Speaker Paul Ryan has endorsed his top lieutenant, California Rep. Kevin McCarthy, to be his successor. Early converations included the possibility that Congressman Steve Scalise would be tapped for the top job in the House. Ryan announced he was stepping down from being Speaker of the House earlier this week.

Individuals suffering from Parkinson’s disease, chronic pain, severe muscle spasms and P-T-S-D would be able to receive a prescription for medical marijuana under legislation that was approved by the full House.

The measure still needs Senate approval. In 2016, the state legislature set up the framework for the legal dispensing of medical marijuana and 10 different conditions would be eligible for a prescription. James bill will add to that list and he hopes it will result in more people using medical pot, instead of pain killers

The House Health and Welfare committee heard hours of testimony on a statewide smoking ban that would include casino’s and bars. The bill by Opelousas Democrat Dustin Miller was voluntarily yanked, so he can work on the language of the measure. If passed it would virtually ban smoking in just about every public building in the state. Wade Duty represents casinos.

Miller says he will bring the bill with the revised language back in two weeks.

The fiscal cliff is smaller, as the state’s Revenue Estimating Conference has lowered the budget shortfall from 994-million to 648-million-dollars…

Winn Parish Sheriff’s deputies were met with gun fire trying to serve a civil warrant in the Chee Chee Dam area. 71-year-old Betty Lemoine was killed by deputies who had just driven up to their home. State Police Trooper Scott Moreau says her son 50 year old Kendall Lemoine was the target of a civil arrest warrant…

The revenue shortfall the state is facing has declined from 994-million-dollars to 648-million-dollars, as a result of the state collecting more income taxes due to the federal tax overhaul. House Speaker Taylor Barras says the extra money would likely go for higher education and the TOPS program…

Governor Edwards proposes using the additional 346-million-dollars to be used for several programs including 25-million-dollars to fully restore the higher education budget, 50-million-dollars going towards TOPS, 20-million for Sheriff Departments to house inmates and another 20-million for the D.O.C. Remaining funds would go to health care programs, senior citizen programs and other state projects.

A bill by Opelousas Democrat Dustin Miller to ban smoking in casinos and bars was voluntarily yanked, so he can work on the language of the measure. Opponents were concerned the bill is too broad and would ban smoking in all public buildings. Cardiologist Brent Rochon testified in favor…
