Governor John Bel Edwards signed legislation banning the use of the social media app Tik Tok on any state-owned devices and state-owned or leased WIFI networks. Marksville Representative Daryl Deshotel, the bill’s author believes similar apps will continue to be a cyber security concern

Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin has proclaimed this Saturday, June 24th as “LSU Baseball Day” in honor of the Tigers baseball team making it to the C-W-S. Ardoin says he wanted to formally honor the team and he’s going to place a wager on the series with Florida’s Secretary of State Cory Byrd.

Following the massive restoration effort by SWEPCO crews 90 percent of customers impacted by Friday’s severe weather have had services restored. However, more than 10,000 customers remain without power in Shreveport district including Bossier City and Haughton.

The best out of three championship series against Florida begins Saturday.

The NCAA investigation into recruiting violations involving LSU’s men’s basketball and football programs is finally completed. Both programs have been put on a three-year probation, but no future postseason bans. TigerRag Editor Todd Horne says the conclusion of the investigation removes a dark cloud hanging over the head of current LSU Basketball Coach Matt McMahon.

The three-year probation for both teams begins in September.

The U-S government approved a ban on TikTok on federal government devices throughout all 50 states.

Governor Edwards also signed legislation that bans corporal punishment in public schools statewide unless parents give written consent. Metairie Representative Stephanie Hilferty says the Department of Education is tasked with creating a permission slip for schools.

LSU has done it, they’ve won three straight elimination games to advance to the championship round of the College World Series. Ochsner Health and MD Anderson Cancer Center have partnered to build an Ochsner MD Anderson Cancer Center in southeast Louisiana with six facilities in the New Orleans area, Baton Rouge, and Covington. Medical director Dr. Brian Moore says the immediate impact of the partnership is a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach and the wider availability of clinical trials for patients in Louisiana.

Governor Edwards has signed a bill that bans corporal punishment in public schools unless there is written consent from the parents. Metairie Representative Stephanie Hilferty says some lawmakers, however, wanted their schools to have the option to use corporal punishment or not in schools.

A Slidell police officer was injured after his vehicle overturned in a ditch while attempting to stop an orange Dodge Charger near Highway 11 and Interstate 12 last night. The pursuit led into Lacombe on Highway 190 West. The officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect is still at large.

LSU Tigers  Pitcher Paul Skenes has recorded a whopping 200 strikeouts on the field which adds up to $2000 donated to the non-profit – Folds of Honor. Senior Director of Chapter Relations Diane Niemecek says it’s an amazing contribution to the organization.

The “Protecting Teachers Rights Act” which provides teachers and administrators with civil and criminal immunity if they intervene in a physical fight on campus was signed into law by Governor John Bel Edwards. Denham Springs Representative Valarie Hodges – the bill author – says this gives teachers added protection.

The bill gained support from the House of Representatives and Senate.

The governor has also signed legislation requiring private health insurance to cover the cost of fertility preservation for those undergoing medical treatments for cancer or other illnesses that could affect their fertility. Baton Rouge Representative Paula Davis patients will now have the option to freeze their eggs or sperm before treatments begin.

Davis says this is welcome news to individuals who could be faced with a loss of fertility on top of a cancer diagnosis.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is warning the public of potential fish kills due to scorching hot temperatures, extended cloudy weather, and storms. Aquatic organisms usually repopulate affected areas by dispersing from nearby, connected, unaffected areas. Inland Fisheries Technical Advisor Robby Maxwell says systems normally recover on their own.

LSU left-hander Nate Ackenhausen threw six shutout innings in a five-to-nothing win to eliminate Tennessee from the College World Series. Ackenhausen received a text yesterday morning that he would make his first start of the season… There’s a concern LSU does not have enough pitching, but Coach Jay Johnson does not share that concern…

Senate Finance Chairman Bodi White regrets voting for the $100 million dollar funding cut to the Louisiana Department of Health in the final moments of the legislative session. White says his time was limited and admits he did not read much if any of the budget.

L-D-H officials told state senators the 100 million dollar cut could result in a 740-million dollar reduction in funding when you factor in federal matching dollars.

LSU toppled Tennessee last night in a 5-to-nothing win. LSU left-hander Nate Ackenahusen threw six shutout innings. The Tigers will need to beat Wake Forest tonight to stay alive. The first pitch is at 6PM.

A new report by CreditCards.com finds Louisiana has the third highest credit card debt burden in the country. The state’s average credit card balance is 54 hundred dollars. Senior Industry Analyst Ted Rossman says people in Louisiana live on a below-average household income.

Louisiana ranked 47th in average household income with an average of $76,000 annually.

The parents of 29-year-old Donovan Bailey who was killed in Reserve in 2013  have joined with Crimestoppers of Greater New Orleans to increase the reward amount for new tips in the cold case. President Darlene Causanza (cu-zan-za) hopes increasing the amount will garner new leads in the case.

With LSU’s crushing 3-2 loss to first-seeded Wake Forest yesterday, they’ll have to make it back from the losers bracket and win 3 consecutive games over the next three days for a spot in the championship series. While the odds may seem slim, Coach Jay Johnson has faith in his team’s ability to bounce back. In fact he says he’s seen it first hand, once in 2016 and again in 2017 by your very own Tigers…

Johnson’s Arizona team rallied to win three straight to advance to the finals before dropping a one-game lead to Coastal Carolina. In 2017, LSU won three straight after a 13-1 blowout at the hands of top-seeded Oregon St before losing two games to Florida in the championship series. 

The Tigers’ powerhouse offense struggled against Wake Forest producing 2 runs on just five hits, the lowest mark for this LSU team since their 3-0 victory over Auburn on May 5th and only the third time all season the Tigers have batted less than 6 hits. Their offense will again be put to the test tonight against Tennessee’s bullpen, but Johnson says his team is ready for the challenge…

Beam was named SEC freshman of the year last year and a preseason all-american. He’s 9-4 on the season with a 3.78 ERA and 79 strikeouts. The winner of the LSU-Tennessee matchup will go on to face Wake Forest while the loser says goodbye to Omaha. The Tigers and Vols are set to get underway at 6:00 tonight.

It’s been a difficult weekend for thousands in northwest Louisiana who have been without power since Thursday night as a result of severe storms. Jeff Palermo has the story…

State Police are investigating an officer-involved fatal shooting in Pineville Sunday early morning. Troopers say police had an encounter with a male subject, who reportedly begin firing at them. The male subject died on the scene. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

Another casualty of the state budget fighting is the Humane Society of Louisiana. HSLA asked for $3 million of the state’s surplus to cover construction and repair costs of shelters across the state.  H-S-L-A Director Jeff Dorson says there was even a plan to build two shelters at state prisons where the inmates would clean and interact with pets.

Last year a request for $2 million to give shelters grants for repairs or renovations was also denied.

The state Department of Health reports nearly 3,000 Louisianans were hospitalized or treated every year from 2010-2020 due to heat-related illness. Parishes with the highest rates of heat-related hospitalizations were clustered around the Central and Northwest regions of the state. Dr. Alicia Van Doren says hospitalization and ED rates for workers are distributed around the northern part of the state.

Director of the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Casey Tingle urges residents to take measures to secure their accounts.

Severe thunderstorms rolled through Caddo and Bossier Parishes early this morning packing winds up to 80 mph. National Weather Service Meteorologist Shane Pendleton says extreme temperatures and more storms will make a bad situation worse.

When it comes to gas prices, what a difference a year makes as the price at the pump is nearly a dollar and a half lower compared to last year’s record high gas prices. Redman says gas prices should hold steady for the summer maybe a slight bump around the 4th of July holiday but no steep hikes are expected unless a hurricane shuts down a bunch of refineries.
