A political analyst says embattled Secretary of State Tom Schedler might not be able to stay in office much longer as the sexual harassment allegations against him will not go away.

Schedler has previously said he will not resign, but this will be his last term. The Republican statewide elected official says it’s important for him to continue running the agency that handles elections, because they are in the process of buying new voting equipment. A Senate-approved bill that would double, and in some cases, increased tenfold the fines associated with soliciting prostitutes passed a House committee nine to six. The bill would not change the current penalty of up to six months in jail for soliciting. Denham Springs Representative Valerie Hodges, supported the legislation, arguing that heavier punishments are the only thing the stop people from trying to buy sex.

There’s only two months left in the fiscal year, and doubts are growing as to whether a spending plan for next budget year can be approved in the current regular session. A 648-million dollar budget gap is forcing lawmakers to consider deep cuts in state spending. The House passed budget includes massive cuts to healthcare, which administrators warn would lead to the end of public-private partnership hospitals. LaPolitics.com Publisher Jeremy Alford says voters won’t accept those kinds of cuts, so revenues will have to be raised to replace the one penny sales tax that is set to expire in July.

Later Today New Orleans Senator J.P. Morrell’s unanimous jury bill goes before the House Committee on Civil Law. The bill which has cleared the Senate would require unanimous decision from a 12 person jury to convict a person of a major felony or to find them innocent. This is Morrell’s third attempt on passing this bill.

The bill would also allow judges to order people convicted of soliciting to attend an educational course that instruct “Johns” on how human trafficking destroys lives. Sponsor Franklinton Senator Beth Mizel says that kind of public shaming is a powerful disincentive.

A longtime employee of the Secretary of State’s office says she received unwanted sexually charged emails, gifts and advances by the man leading the agency Tom Schedler, for at least a decade. Dawn Ross gave to the Louisiana Radio Network an internview that detailed harassment accusations including claims that she was banished from the office. Ross also said that the Secretary of State even went as far as moving into a townhome located in the same complex where she lived.

The Advocate newspaper reports that a man will shot to death early Saturday morning in Baton Rouge. 23 year old Ricard Alberto Agular was gunned down at between 3:30 and 4 am on Jade avenue. It was reported that the victim was outside an apartment when two men wearing hooded sweatshirts approached him and demanded money.

The Senate passed a bill that would allow teachers to pray in public schools with students. Matt Doyle has more.

The scandal surrounding Schelder has continued to unfold with the front page of the Advocate newspaper publishing emails showing advances by Schedler. In the wake of the published emails, U-S Senator John Kennedy said the Schedler should step down.  Schedler defended his refusal to resign saying it’s vital for him to keep running the agency responsible for elections because it’s in the process of buying new voting equipment. Governor John Bel Edwards has also called for Schedler to resign.

New Orleans traded up in Thursday night’s first round of the NFL draft to select the athlete from Texas-San Antonio.
