Tropical Storm Gordon had little effect on Louisiana.  The storm made landfall last night near the Alabama-Mississippi line.  State Climatologist Barry Keim says when it comes to monitoring the weather, better safe than sorry.

A Baton Rouge man who’d been accused of attempted murder of a police officer during a traffic stop last month has had his charges dropped by the DA. The officer says while retreating, 21-year-old Raheem Howard fired at him, but the DA says there’s just not enough evidence to back that up. Howard’s lawyer, Ron Haley, says it’s a troubling incident that needs further investigation.

A conference committee began discussions on a new Farm Bill today on Capitol Hill, with Republicans pushing for major reforms to food stamp eligibility.  Congressman Ralph Abraham from Richland Parish is on the committee and he supports a work or educational requirement for an able bodied adult to be eligible for SNAP. Abraham says employers are desperate for labor, and this is a good step towards pushing the unemployed into the workforce.

A Baton Rouge man who’d been accused of attempted murder of a police officer during a traffic stop last month has had his charges dropped by the DA due to a lack of evidence. Officer Yuseff Hamadeh initiated the traffic stop on August 7th over a missing license plate. During the stop Raheem Howard fled the scene and was pursued, at which point the Hamadeh says he was shot at, which prompted the officer to open fire. But Howards Lawyer, Ron Haley says it’s obvious at this point that Howard didn’t even have a gun.

A conference committee began discussions on a new Farm Bill today on Capitol Hill, with Republicans pushing for work requirements for food stamp eligibility. There’s seven million job openings in American, but many of them are minimum to low wage. Congressman Ralph Abraham says a key part of the reform is finding ways to get people jobs that pay enough to get them off the dole.

Tropical Storm Gordon will likely not have any long lasting effects on the state.  State Climatologist Barry Keim says Louisiana was spared by  Gordon due to two factors. As Gordon came ashore, it was further east in the cone of uncertainty, and it wasn’t as fierce as some had projected the storm to be.

Farm Bill hearings continued today on Capitol Hill, with Republicans pushing for major reforms to food stamp eligibility. North Louisiana Congressman Ralph Abraham says they’re looking to implement work mandates or 20 hour a week volunteer, and educational requirements. Abraham says employers are desperate for labor, and this is a good step towards pushing the unemployed into the workforce.

Senator John Kennedy had a front row seat to the Judiciary Supreme Court confirmation hearing for Judge Brett Kavanagh that got a bit rowdy between the protesters and Democrats on the committee who excoriated their colleagues to refusing to release what they say are key documents about the judge. Kennedy waded in, saying the judicial selection process wasn’t the place for these kinds of fights. the Senator says in due time the Judge’s record will be scrutinized.

Eyes across the Bayou State continue to monitor the impact of Gordon.  National Weather Service Meteorologist Eric Carpenter says with Gordon’s move inland, the storm should slow down as northern portions of the state feels the impact of rain. Carpenter says the amount of rain to brace for depends on where the storm happens to finally stall.

LSU Health New Orleans is joining an international study that’s showing positive results in the search for alternatives to knee replacement for those who suffer chronic pain. They’re the first US based organization to join the study. Associate Professor Vinod Dasa says the CartiHeal system cores out the arthritic regions of the knee, and then begins the process of regrowth.

Vinod says the early results have been promising, and if the trial continues its success it could be a big relief for thousands who suffer, but are not eligible for traditional knee replacements.

11th ranked LSU will play the rest of the season without its top pass rusher as Coach Ed Orgeron says K’Lavon Chaisson suffered a knee injury in the win over the Miami Hurricanes

Chaisson plays the “Buck” position in Dave Aranda’s defense. Sophomore Andre Anthony replaced Chaisson after he suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game. Sophomore Ray Thornton, JUCO transfer Travez Moore and freshman Jarell Cherry could also see more time on the field.

LSU threw for just 140 yards in the win over the Hurricanes. Orgeron says the passing game can improve and it starts with the offensive line giving quarterback Joe Burrow more time to throw

Tropical Storm Gordon looks more like a problem for Mississippi and Alabama, as the storm is expected to make landfall late tonight on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.  As of the 4PM NHC advisory, Gordon is sitting 90 miles south of Mobile, with max sustained winds of 70 miles per hour. Danielle Manning, with the National Weather Service in Slidell, says Gordon is expected to move through Mississippi tomorrow and enter northeast Louisiana as a tropical depression by night fall

Despite weakening projections, 200 Louisiana National Guardsmen have been activated in southeast Louisiana. General Glenn Curtis says they are ready to assist if water rescues are necessary…

A contractor accused of ripping off customers across five parishes after the 2016 flood receives a four-year prison sentence and is forced to repay 84-thousand dollars to 11 Livingston Parish victims. 41-year-old Matthew Morris was indicted on 51 counts, but ended up pleading guilty to only one. Legal Analyst Tim Meche says the state got what it needed to out of the case.

Pineville Police Chief Don Weatherford says he’s disappointed with Sergeant Edric Smith who was arrested on a battery charge for an incident that happened during a youth softball game on the University of Louisiana at Monroe campus. Smith allegedly attacked an umpire, punching the official three times in the face. The 45-year-old sergeant was released on a one-thousand dollar bond.

Governor John Bel Edwards is asking residents in southeast Louisiana not to take Tropical Storm Gordon lightly.  As of the 4PM advisory, Gordon is 445 miles East South East of the mouth of the Mississippi River with max sustained winds of 50MPH. Edwards says there is still a chance for some nasty weather in the Bayou State…

St. Tammany and Washington parishes are in the cone of uncertainty as Gordon moves closer to the northern Gulf Coast. St. Tammany President Pat Brister says 40-thousand sandbags were distributed yesterday.

The National Hurricane Center says 4 to 8 inches is possible in northeast Louisiana when Gordon reaches the Mississippi Delta as a tropical depression tomorrow.

Edwards says there is still a chance for some nasty weather in the Bayou State. Edwards says Gordon could also deliver some bad weather to northeast Louisiana tomorrow as that region of the state is under a flash flood watch….

And while the storm has seen it’s projections downgraded from a hurricane at landfall to a tropical storm, there are still a few areas of Southeast Louisiana that may end up getting some nasty weather as a result of the system. St. Tammany President Pat Brister says the parish could experience tropical storm force winds.
