A disorganized area of thunderstorms in the northwest Caribbean Sea is grabbing the attention of forecasters. Seth Warthen, with the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, says the chances of development of anything major are negligible. Warthen says once the storm moves north, the risk for a major impact in Louisiana is fairly low.

But under Louisiana law, planning a murder doesn’t result in a first-degree murder charge.

It’s yet another year in a row New Orleans has failed to win their opening game. They went 0-2 to start the year last year.

Louisiana Senator John Kennedy says he’s ready to vote for Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s appointment to the US Supreme Court.

The Louisiana Department of Health reports 47 women died from pregnancy-related causes in a six-year span starting in 2011, one of the highest rates of maternal mortality in the nation. L-D-H Secretary Dr. Rebekah Gee says those numbers do reflect the previous administration, and they’re hoping for better results from the Medicaid expansion that substantially increased insurance coverage levels statewide.

A crash involving two vehicles has killed two, including a Montgomery, LA police officer. Troopers responded to the crash Friday night around 6:30 p.m. on Hwy 71, in Montgomery. The crash involved a police vehicle driven by 24 year old Kirt R. Ricks III and a Ford pickup, driven by 65-year-old Gary W. Pinder.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Louisiana’s Supreme Court has overturned the conviction and death sentence of a man who prosecutors say lured a 12 year old boy to his death by sending text messages in which he pretended to be a teenage girl.  The high court says Brian Horn’s rights were violated when his lawyer conceded at the 2014 trial that Horn killed Justin Bloxom of DeSoto Parish.  The case will now go back for a new trial.

The Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday kicks off today, but the savings won’t be as substantial as in years past. That’s due to the legislature’s decision to end state sales tax holidays in the final budget compromise from the special session. But local sales tax exemptions are still in effect.  Local Sales Tax Board Executive Director Roger Bergeron says the often notable difference in local tax rates won’t matter this weekend.

The back of a Mandeville synagogue was covered swastikas and other Nazi symbols and messages that were discovered Wednesday morning. The phrase “Synagogue of Satan” and “burn” were clearly displayed on the Northshore Jewish Congregation’s walls, along with white supremacist code numbers. Mandeville Police Chief Gerald Sticker says they’re looking for information from the public, because the time frame when it could have occurred was so wide.
