Starting in 2019, Louisiana high school students who compete sequences of STEM courses, will receive a special designation on their diploma for their efforts. Department of Education Assistant Superintendent Ken Bradford says students will be recognized depending on how many courses they’ve taken.

Cajun Navy supporters have been deceived to donate funds to scammers impersonating the relief organization. An investigation by the Better Business Bureau says several imitators have been discovered accepting donations. The Sunshine Bridge connecting Donaldsonville to Sorrento to cross the Mississippi has been closed due to damage sustained from a barge carrying a crane colliding with the structure. DOTD Communications Director Rodney Mallett says the closure is going to be an inconvenience to the estimated 25-thousand drivers that use the structure on a daily basis, but there are alternate ways of crossing the Mississippi River.

Drivers that use the Sunshine Bridge connecting Donaldsonville to Sorrento to cross the Mississippi River as part of their normal commute are going to have to find a new route for a while as the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development have announced the closure of the bridge as the result of damage sustained from a barge. DOTD Communications Director Rodney Mallett says there is no timeline for when the bridge will reopen.

Louisiana State Police have arrested a Baton Rouge man after he threatened to kill troopers and other law enforcement officers during a traffic stop.  42-year-old Melvin Amar, Jr. was pulled over when he was observed driving a pickup truck with no tag and he was not wearing a seatbelt.  Trooper Bryan Lee says during the course of the stop, Amar started making threats.

The State Fire Marshal’s team is on the scene just east of Panama City, where the eyewall of Hurricane Michael came ashore, bringing untold amounts of devastation. Fire Marshal Butch Browning says the damage is extensive, and the storm took out most of the vital utilities that are needed to run a modern city.

The Secretary of State’s office is appealing the decision by The Office of State Procurement voiding a multi-million dollar contract that would have replaced the state’s aging voting machines.  Interim Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin says the Edwards administration rejected the contract, because a lobbyist for a losing bidder is a supporter of the governor. Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat says name recognition is lacking in the Secretary of State’s race, so the candidates are taking a risk by paying for commercial spots to attack Ardoin…

A meter reader for Entergy has been fired after falsifying meter readings and now about four-thousand Entergy customers in southeast Louisiana are experiencing sticker shock with their latest bills. Entergy Vice President of Distribution Melonie Stewart says they are giving customers many months to pay the heavy bill.
