Parents of a Benton Elementary School nine-year-old student who say their child was abused by alleged serial predator and teacher “Perry” Norcross have filed a lawsuit against the Bossier Parish School System alleging negligence. Legal Analyst Tim Meche says if evidence surfaces that the school was warned about Norcross, they could be in trouble.

The Highway Safety Research Group has released its report that breaks down the data of Louisiana’s 2017 traffic reports that shows the state had 771 highway deaths last year, up slightly from 2016.  Executive Director of the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission Lisa Freeman says the state has seen a slight decrease in pedestrian deaths from 2016 to 2017, but says they still need to reach out to motorists to remember to share the road.

The main contributing factors in traffic fatalities were alcohol with 187 deaths and a low percentage use of safety belts, as 56% of all occupants who died in a crash weren’t wearing a safety belt. Executive Director of the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission Lisa Freeman says the impact of the traffic crashes, are denting both cars and the economy, with costs over $8 billion.

Over the last eleven days, three adults and four children have lost their lives in six different fires across the state.  The State Fire Marshal says many of these deaths have been attributed to a lack of fire alarms.  Agency spokesperson, Ashley Rodrigue says in the event of an emergency, a smoke alarm can be vital.

A Buckeye elementary school teacher has been arrested for possession of alcohol on public school property after an assistant principal noticed she was displaying odd behavior. Captain Tommy Carnline, with the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s office says upon investigating the teacher’s classroom, they found a partially consumed bag of wine.

Carnline says the teacher didn’t state why she had decided to indulge in an adult beverage while on campus.

Hit songwriter and guitarist Tony Joe White from West Carroll Parish has died suddenly at the age of 75 from a heart attack. White was born on a cotton farm near Oak Grove and is best known for writing the 1969 hit “Polk Salad Annie” and “Rainy Night in Georgia.” Oak Grove native Harriet Monroe Miller says White would often come back to his hometown
