A study has promising results for children who suffer from severe peanut allergies. Matt Doyle has more.

Governor Edwards and Wanhua Chemical Group have announced Louisiana will be the site for a one-point-two-five billion dollar chemical manufacturing complex.  It will be built in St. James Parish on 250 acres and is expected to create 170 direct jobs with an average annual salary of just over $80-thousand dollars.

 

Les Miles is back as a college football coach. The “Mad Hatter” has a five-year deal with the Kansas Jayhawks that will pay the 65-year-old two-point-seven million dollars a year. Miles says he’s been eager to coach again, since LSU fired him in September of 2016

Louisiana ATC can now enforce a law barring anyone under the age of 21 from working as an erotic dancer in bars and nightclubs. That law, passed in 2016, had been held up after a federal court declared it too vague, but Solicitor General Liz Murrill, with the Louisiana A-G’s office, says that’s no longer the case.

The “Mad Hatter” has a five-year deal with the Kansas Jayhawks that will pay the 65-year-old two-point-seven million dollars a year. Miles won 114 games at LSU and boasted a 77-percent winning percentage. But his critics said his run-oriented offense couldn’t win the big game in today’s college football. Miles defended his offensive philosophy at LSU when asked during his introductory press conference

Louisiana ATC can now enforce a law barring anyone under the age of 21 from working as an erotic dancer in bars and nightclubs, in a court reversal of a hold on a 2016 anti-trafficking law that Solicitor General Liz Murrill says was justified, and needed.

The Department of Children and Family Services is teaming up with the United Way in an effort to expand workforce training for food stamp recipients in seven southeast Louisiana parishes.  DCFS Secretary Marketa Garner Walters says the partnership expands who can receive federal dollars to be used to reimburse programs for the cost of training with SNAP recipients.

Children who suffer from severe peanut allergies may be in luck, as a new treatment can help mitigate the potentially deadly effects of accidental ingestion. It’s an oral medication that builds up peanut tolerance in allergy sufferers over six months. LSU Health New Orleans Allergy expert Dr. Sanjay Kamboj says they ran the experiment on 372 children.

One in 50 Americans is estimated to have a peanut allergy.

LSU Health New Orleans Allergy expert Dr. Sanjay Kamboj says it’s not for light allergy sufferers, and you won’t be scarfing down PB&J’s, but, you could eat something cooked in peanut oil.

Two thirds of the participants who took the treatments saw positive results, but roughly 20 percent of participants had to drop out, and 14 percent of those taking the treatment had episodes that required epinephrine, vs only 6 percent of those who took the placebo.

Les Miles is back as a college football coach, this time at Kansas. Miles says after watching Kansas play Oklahoma this past weekend, he’s optimistic he can turn the Jayhawks into a winner quickly…

The funeral is set for a police officer in Slidell who died Saturday from injuries suffered in an on-duty motorcycle in September while he was escorting a funeral procession.  The services for Officer Jason Seals will be held Wednesday at noon.  He was survived by his wife and three young children.

Progress on the federal Farm Bill may be frozen in place after a midterm switch that’s set to divide Congress. Congressman Ralph Abraham is hoping the lower chamber can pass work requirements for food stamps while Republicans still have a majority in the House.

He says if they fail to pass it now, Democrats will likely completely rewrite the bill.

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office deputies are searching for 49-year-old Michael Vallery, who is wanted for stabbing and killing his wife Stefanie Vallery, 51, and injuring two of her relatives around 8 o’clock last night.  The incident happened at the wife’s home.  The two were separated at the time of the incident.  Deputies urge anyone who sees Vallery to not approach him and to immediately call 911.

 

Work continues during the lame duck session of Congress on approving a new Farm Bill, but work requirements for food stamp recipients continue to be a major stumbling block. Republican Representative Ralph Abraham from Richland Parish is pushing for work or educational requirements for able-bodied adults, but Democrats want to completely rewrite the bill.

Abraham is hopeful a new farm bill can be passed before Congress adjourns for 2018.

Former Tigers Head Coach Les Miles has agreed to a 1.5 million dollar contract settlement with LSU that frees him up to chase new job opportunities, whether on the field or silver screen. Miles was making 133,000 a month to not work, but if he joined a new team, that money likely would have stopped. Miles may be losing out on five million dollars, but Moran says it’s tough to put a price on career freedom.

Suspected serial killer 78-year-old Samuel Little has confessed to the murder of two Terrebonne Parish women.  The murders happened in 1982 and 1996.  Houma Police Sgt. Travis Theriot says the most important part of this case is that now the families of the victims  have closure.

Repairs to the Sunshine Bridge in St. James Parish are ahead of schedule.  The bridge has been closed due to a barge carrying a crane colliding with the structure last month.  The detour has inconvenienced the nearly 25,000 drivers who use the bridge daily. DOTD spokesperson Rodney Mallett says that those being detoured seem to be handling it okay for the time being.

Baton Rouge has been flooded with gunfire over the last week, with a 20 percent increase in shots fired, and 10 dead from shootings in the last 15 days including a kindergartner who was shot by a 13-year-old. Police Chief Murphy Paul attributes the majority of these shootings to drug related crime.

This spike in shootings comes after months of peace relative to the historic levels of violence in 2017.

It doesn’t look like offensive tackle Terron Armstead will play as reports say he’ll miss three to four weeks with a pectoral injury. This means a likely start for Jermon Bushrod.

In other action Saturday. ULM is at Arkansas State, the Ragin Cajuns host South Alabama, Louisiana Tech is at Southern Miss, McNeese hosts Lamar.

For the first time since 2005 and only the second time in school history, Nicholls won a Southland Conference championship in football with a resounding 44-0 win in the River Bell Classic. Freshmen Julien Gums led a strong rushing attack with 121 yards and two touchdowns. The victory gives the Colonels an automatic berth in the FCS playoffs.

Also last night, Northwestern State won the annual battle for chief Caddo as the Demons downed Stephen F Austin. The Demons finish the year 5-6.
And Houston trounced Tulane 48-17 to end the Green Wave’s three-game winning streak.
