John Madden may be retired as a football commentator, but 21 years later he still celebrates holidays with a Louisiana classic creation, the Turkducken.

Thousands are in their vehicle right now, trying to get to their Thanksgiving destination.  State Police Sergeant Jared Sandifer says if you are feeling tired, let someone else drive who may be more awake.

During last year’s Thanksgiving holiday, State Police investigated over 550 crashes involving injury.  15 people were killed.

Tomorrow, the Lafayette High Marching Band will have the honor to march in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. Over 200 members left the Hub city on Monday for this once in a lifetime opportunity. Lafayette High is one of 12 bands invited to march in this year’s parade and Assistant Drum Major Payton Boutte told KLFY TV came as a complete surprise when they found out a year ago…

21 years ago Glenn Mistich introduced football analyst John Madden, and by extension the country, to a Louisiana original, the Turducken. Mitstich, who runs Gourmet Butcher Block in Gretna with his wife, was summoned before the December 7thRams game by WWL’s Bob Delgiorno to bring the voice of football the frankenbird. Madden immediately fell in love.

Emeril Lagasse will be cooking this year’s FOX NFL feast before the Saints/Falcons game kicks off tomorrow at 7:20PM.

With the uptick in travel over the next few days, State Police urge those hitting the roadways to exercise caution and patience when in transit to their destination.  Sgt. Jared Sandifer says with the increase in travel comes an increase in crashes, as was the case for the Thanksgiving holiday in 2017.

A federal judge in Mississippi has ruled that an abortion ban after 15 weeks is unconstitutional. The ruling included a searing attack on the state’s bottom of the rankings performance when it comes to infant mortality and children’s health. That means a similar law passed in Louisiana this year will not go into effect anytime soon. Louisiana’s 15-week abortion ban only goes into effect if the federal court upholds the law in Mississippi. It’s unclear if the Mississippi governor will appeal the decision.

Turkeys aren’t the only birds getting cooked this week as an 18-wheeler hauling a load of frozen chickens caught fire this morning on I-20 in Lincoln Parish.  No injuries were reported, but the cargo appears to be a loss.  It’s unclear at this time what sparked the blaze.

A Mandeville couple starts their holidays off the right way by discovering a 1.8 million dollar June winning lottery ticket after doing some fall cleaning. Louisiana Lottery spokesperson BreAnne Frye says the couple plans on being responsible with their new found winnings.

Governor Edwards, on Ask the Governor, said minimum wage increase successes in other southern states have galvanized his administration to push for a Louisiana minimum wage increase from 7.25 an hour to 8.50. But a legislative leader on minimum wage issues says 8.50 an hour may not cut it this time around. New Orleans Senator Troy Carter says after three years of zero progress, he’s looking at a more ambitious plan than what the Governor is proposing.

The increase is opposed by Corporate lobbies like the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry.

A Lake Charles man was rescued by Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries in Cameron Parish.  According to the man, he was duck hunting on a kayak when he got lost trying to find his way back to the launch.  Authorities received the report when he was overdue to return and located the man the next morning.  The man claims he had no cellular service to call for help.  He was taken to a hospital to be treated for mild hypothermia.

 

A Mandeville couple has something additional to be thankful for as they were cleaning house preparing for family coming into town and found a winning lottery ticket, just two weeks shy of expiration.  The ticket was valued at 1.8 million dollars, as it was the sole jackpot-winning ticket from a June drawing.  Louisiana Lottery spokesperson BreAnne Frye says the ticket was found on a nightstand.

Frye added the couple plans on putting the winnings toward their retirement.

The Louisiana tradition of frying a turkey for Thanksgiving can be disastrous if not done correctly.  The holiday can result in a cornucopia of calls to first responders.  State Fire Marshal Butch Browning says to make sure your frying pot is on grass or concrete, not on a wooden surface.  Also, that it is far enough away from anything combustible.

The School Board meeting in Vermilion Parish where a teacher was forcibly removed after questioning the Superintendent’s pay raise has been legally voided by the courts. Jeff Palermo has more.

Two are under arrest in connection to the October 14th shooting death of a Lafayette area boxer, 28-year-old Brandon Broussard. Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s spokesperson John Mowell says the second suspect was nabbed by Marshal’s in another state.

Both suspects are facing Second Degree Murder charges.

 

Representative Mike Johnson has been elected as the chairman of the Republican Study Committee for the 116th Congress.  Johnson appeared on Talk Louisiana with Jim Engster to discuss his new role.  With 159 members, it’s the largest caucus of conservatives in Congress.  Johnson says the caucus has been around for 45 years with the goal of leading influence in the legislative agenda.

It’s less than three days from Thanksgiving, and if you’re roasting a bird you’ll want to make sure your guests don’t end up regretting it on black Friday. LSU AgCenter food safety expert Wenqing Xu says check the temperature in all potential cold spots, like under the wings.  And while you’re at it, you might want to get a head start on putting that turkey in the fridge so you don’t get defrosted turkey juice all over the counter because you’re trying to get the bird de-iced on short notice.

The Vermilion Parish School board has had their infamous January meeting voided by the courts. That’s the one where a teacher was dragged out of the room by a guard while questioning a Superintendent raise that was ultimately passed. Attorney General Jeff Landry says Landry says it’s a win for justice and the rule of law, and this one was one of the most clear-cut violations of Open Meeting Laws he’s seen.

The educator, Deyshia Hargrave, was questioning Superintendent Jerome Puyau’s 30,000 dollar raise.

Two are under arrest in connection to the October 14th shooting death of a Lafayette area boxer, 28-year-old Brandon Broussard. Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s spokesperson John Mowell says authorities apprehended 41-year-old Shavis Toby yesterday.

St. James Parish scores a 1.25 billion dollar chemical facility that’s set to generate an estimated 1,250 jobs. Matt Doyle has more.

Louisiana spent almost 35-thousand dollars on attorney fees to settle the sexual harassment suit against former Secretary of State Tom Schedler. That’s in addition to the 149-thousand dollars that went to the alleged victim in the out of court settlement. Schedler also personally paid 18-thousand dollars to the ex-employee.
