According to  the US Census Bureau, Louisiana is among nine states that has seen a loss of population, with a decrease by nearly 11,000 in the time between July 2017 and July 2018. Since 2010, Louisiana’s population has only increased by 115,000, compared to Texas who has seen an increase of 3.5 million and Florida with 2.5 million. Demographer Greg Rigamer says even on growth rate, we’re being paced by those two.

A Texas judge has declared the entirety of Obamacare illegal, but the Trump administration says they won’t be making any changes until after a final legal result likely winds it’s way up to the US Supreme Court. Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon  says because of the popularity of certain aspects of the ACA, if it were to be struck down in the Supreme Court, it’s like Congress would take up an effort like the one proposed by Texas Senator Ted Cruz.

Governor John Bel Edwards says a Texas judge’s decision to declare the entire Affordable Care Act unconstitutional could lead to the loss of health insurance for 480,000 recipients of the Medicaid expansion, and 850,000 people with pre-existing conditions, but Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon says he’s been told nothing is potentially changing until the case works its way through the courts.

22 year-old Verenize Alvarez has been arrested for criminal trespassing and theft in relation to an amazon Christmas package theft in Ascension Parish. The package was allegedly stolen yesterday at a Pascal Drive residence, but police say surveillance footage shows Alvarez taking the gifts, and leaving. When contacted, police say Alvarez admitted to the thefts, but says the packages were tossed and not recovered. She’s been booked into the Ascension Parish Jail.

Two people are under arrest for child trafficking in a case where investigators allege a juvenile was forced to engage in sexual acts across Louisiana, and even trafficked across state lines. 21-year-old Shaena Kelly and 39-year-old Derrick Hall are facing child trafficking charges. Hall also faces a charge of Carnal Knowledge. Investigators believe the actions took place in several parishes, and even crossed the state border into Texas. Because of this, they say additional charges may be coming soon.

 

Two brothers are facing first-degree murder charges after a weekend shooting that left two men dead in a Raceland home.  Deputies took 34 year old Kerry Alexander and 28 year old Jerrell Alexander into custody on Saturday night.  LaFourche Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Lt. Brennan Matherne says the suspects entered the garage wearing all black clothing and camouflage masks.

Brennan Matherne says the brothers have extensive criminal histories.  They are now being held at the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux.

An 8-year-old Vinton child diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor earlier this year made a simple request for the holidays.  Drake Quibodeaux wanted plenty of Christmas cards.  So far, he’s opened more than 30,000, including cards from some notable names including President Trump and country music singer Tim McGraw.   A GoFundMe page for the family is sending them to the Fiesta Bowl, Disney World, and help with medical bills.

A Youngsville man has been arrested after allegedly counterfeiting 100 dollars bills, and police say when caught, he hid the cash in pants and then later tried to dispose of the evidence in the cop car that was driving him to jail. Duson Police Chief Kip Judice says Stephen Young was initially caught after a tip from a local gas station casino who was suspicious of the cash. The Chief says after accepting the cash, the casino checked, and then double checked its validity.

The 29-year-old is facing several counts of Monetary Instrument Abuse, along with a charge of Obstruction of Justice.

Governor John Bel Edwards says he’ll be running in the Louisiana Marathon in Baton Rouge next month to help raise awareness for the importance of quality exercise. Edwards says January marks the 8th anniversary of the Louisiana Marathon and it’s seen its participants grow each year….
