Despite the looming threat of tropical storm Hilary and a 5.1 magnitude earthquake hitting southern California an hour and a half before kickoff, the Saints and Chargers played their week 2 preseason game, and the Saints won 22-17. Jameis Winston threw for 169 yards on 13 of 21 passing, and Jake Haener threw for 118 yards on 11 of 17 passing. The Saints got the win, but not without racking up 14 penalties for 141 yards. Coach Dennis Allen is happy about the win, but says there are plenty of things to work on.

The Saints are scheduled to play the Texans on Sunday, Aug. 27 to wrap up their preseason, despite having joint practices lined up, they agreed it was in their best interests to hold their own practices separately.

 

It’s officially game week for Louisiana Tech. Head coach Sonny Cumbie and the Bulldogs will be playing Florida International on Saturday in Ruston for their Week Zero matchup. Cumbie says his team has a high skill level, but there are still a few unknowns.

LSU completed their inter squad scrimmage on Saturday and had great performances from both sides of the ball. Both quarterbacks Jayden Daniels and Garrett Nussmeier looked game ready and cornerback Zy Alexander forced a fumble and recovered it. Running back Kaleb Jackson filled in and had the performance of the day. Jackson scored two touchdowns including one from a 75 yard break away run.

The LHSAA and the nine schools are facing off in court today over the restructured playoff format. The schools are seeking a preliminary injunction over the change of the select non select playoff school shuffling. Representing the schools is attorney Brian Blackwell.

Trump is also facing nearly 100 criminal charges from four different federal criminal indictments.

The federal government awards a one-point-eight million dollar grant to Poverty Point World Heritage Site in West Carroll Parish that be used to fund a new interactive museum, research center, visitor center, and other amenities. Division of Administration spokesperson Jacques Berry says the plan is to modernize the experience, so that’s what the grant is paying for….

The state has seen 407,000 Louisianans leave their jobs in the first six months of this year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Economist Loren Scott says many Louisiana workers are leaving their job for better pay…

And according to the Louisiana Workforce Commission, the state’s unemployment rate in July was 3.5 percent, the lowest ever for July.

A court hearing in Baton Rouge takes place today over the LHSAA’s playoff format for football, basketball, baseball, and softball. A group of schools Rapides Parish and the Monroe area are upset the LHSAA executive committee reduced the number of playoff brackets and moved a bunch of schools from non-select to select. Right now, only 40 percent of kids statewide meet kindergarten readiness skills and behaviors, according to a report by the Louisiana Policy Institute for Children. Louisiana spends less than half of one percent of state dollars on early care and education. LPIC Director Libbie Sonnier says more funding is needed to invest in early care and education for children to provide them with a foundation.

according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics,  407,000 workers in the Bayou state voluntarily left their job from January to June of this year.  Economist Loren Scott says more workers are leaving their jobs for better pay but seeing wages go up….

A record 760,000 Louisianans left their job last year so the Bayou State is on pace to break that record. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says an estimated 114-thousand workers were hired in June and 602-thousand have been hired for the year.

St. Tammany Authorities are investigating a deadly crash that killed a 12-year-old and a 13-year-old girl in Bush on Saturday. Deputies learned the two juveniles were riding an ATV four-wheeler on Churchill Downs Drive when for unknown reasons the ATV went off the road and hit a tree. The investigation is ongoing.

Data released by the Louisiana Workforce Commission this week shows Louisiana’s unemployment rate fell to 3.5 percent. That’s the lowest rate ever for the month, beating last year’s then-record of 3.6 percent.

The State Fire Marshal is investigating a fatal house and brush fire that resulted in the discovery of a body in Franklinton on Thursday. Spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue says investigators believe the blaze may have started outside of the home.

The brush fire around the home located off of H.C. Rushing Road prevented firefighters from accessing the house fire for several hours.
The victim is believed to be the 72-year-old homeowner who had mobility challenges. Official identification is pending.

The Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office says a wildfire that was threatening homes in the town of Zwolle has been contained. The woods fire began yesterday afternoon and no injuries were reported.

Louisiana pollster John Couvillon says his latest national survey of Republicans still finds President Trump performing well in the polls despite multiple federal indictments. Couvillon says 52-percent of the Republicans he surveyed say they would vote for Trump, but Florida Governor Ron Desantis’ support is starting to wane…

20-million dollars left over from the now closed Road Home Program will be used to help fund a proposed passenger rail line between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne says they planned to give the 20-million dollars back to the feds…

The Louisiana Department of Insurance has postponed a hearing on the proposed sale of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana to Elevance Health. Concerns about the effect on customers have been raised about the two-point-five billion dollar deal. A new hearing date has been set for October 5th and sixth.

We’ll see high temperatures get above 105-degrees in some parts of the state this weekend. LRN meteorologist John Wetherbee reports the sun will continue to bake the Bayou State…

Sabine Parish authorities have evacuated residents due to another wildfire that began earlier today.  The fire is located right behind the new North Sabine Fire Station east of Zwolle. Firefighters contained two wildfires this week that left at least eight houses destroyed or heavily damaged.

More than 135 wildfires have burned across Louisiana over the past week according to the state agriculture and forestry. Firefighters in Sabine Parish are still working to contain two wildfires that erupted earlier this week. South Sabine Fire Chief Douglas Downs says the outpouring of support they’ve received to contain the fires has been overwhelming.

The Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana held a candidate forum featuring treasurer candidates Democrat Dustin Granger, and Republicans Scott McKnight and John Fleming. Each candidate was asked about their stance on investing in ESGs, or Environment, Social, and Governance companies that support sustainable energy.

McKnight says ESGs are not a good return on investment and that it goes against what the state’s economy is built on the oil and gas industry. And while he’s not against diversifying investments…

As the drought continues, firefighters in Sabine Parish remain vigilant to keep two wildfires that erupted earlier this week contained. South Sabine Fire Chief Douglas Downs says there are still a few hotspots burning.

He says firefighters are monitoring the area 24/7.

Visibility in the area remains limited and he discourages any sightseers, so they won’t interfere with responding fire and power crews.

Downs says the extreme heat and dry conditions made for a perfect storm and it’s only exacerbated the situation for firefighters. As for the original cause of the blaze…

Downs says the wildfires would not have been contained without the assistance of neighboring parishes and state resources. He says the outpouring of support they’ve received from the community is overwhelming.

Downs also asks the public to be extremely mindful of anything that could spark another wildfire as the drought continues.

On Wednesday a volunteer firefighter was injured as a firetruck was backing up. Downs says he was airlifted as a precaution and has since been released from the hospital.

The race for Insurance Commissioner was decided yesterday after one of the two candidates dropped out of the race. Republican Tim Temple is now commissioner-elect.  Governor John Bel Edwards who says he personally knows Temple, congratulated him on his monthly call-in radio show

Temple ran for commissioner in 2019 against incumbent Jim Donelon. After qualifying just last week, Democrat Rich Weaver of Prairieville withdrew from the race.

The National Hurricane Center says there’s the possibility of some tropical activity in the Gulf of Mexico next week. Louisiana Radio Network meteorologist John Wetherbee says the low-pressure area has yet to develop, but a tropical wave coming out of the Bahamas could show signs of developing by the beginning of next week…
