Zion Williamson is officially a Pelican, and New Orleans is buzzing about the Duke legend’s selection with the first pick in last night’s NBA Draft.

After shaking hands with the commissioner, Zion, his mom, and his little brother gathered for an interview where the top pick was overcome with emotion. He spoke about it afterwards…

Cut 3 (09) “…through it.”

Williamson grew up in the Carolinas and went to school in the town of Spartanburg, South Carolina.

The phenom joins one of the youngest teams In the league, a team that is brimming with potential after trading for Lakers young guns Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, and Josh Hart. Zion says that kind of foundation makes New Orleans a perfect jumping off point for his young career.

Cut 4 (10) “…over there.”

The former Lakers were acquired when New Orleans traded Anthony Davis to the Lakers. The team also received a bevy of first round picks, including the 4th pick this year, that was traded for the 8th and 17th.

The team’s first overall pick in last night’s draft visited the city earlier in the week and got a taste of the culture that he’ll be stewing in for at least the next half decade. At his post draft press conference, Williamson got a taste of the kinds of questions he’ll be faced with in the Big Easy.

Cut 5 (10) “…question.”

Williamson averaged 23 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 assists a game shooting a unbelievable 68 percent from the floor at Duke last year.

Pelicans’ Executive Vice President David Griffin sat triumphantly at a post draft press conference after selecting Zion Williamson at 1, Center Jaxson Hayes at 8, and shooting guard Nikeil Alexander-Walker at 17 in the first round.

Griffin says everyone in, and outside of the organization is gearing up for a bright, winning future…

Cut 6 (10) “…passed.”

Griffin came into the night with the 1st and 4th pick, but traded the fourth and Solomon Hill’s burdensome contract to Atlanta for the 8th and 17th. This gives the team ample cap room in free agency.

The Pelicans’ head honcho used the moment to reaffirm his commitment to at times embattled coach Alvin Gentry. He says Gentry and Williamson forged a special bond over their shared upbringing in the Carolinas…

Cut 7 (11) “…slavery”

Griffin says he knows fans have high expectations for Williamson, but for the upcoming 2019-2020, it’ll still be established All-Star point guard Jrue Holliday’s team…

Cut 8 (10) “…reparations.”

Griffin added they talked to Jrue after the Anthony Davis trade about becoming the new team leader.

Summer has arrived and the first day of the season is seeing the heat index in the triple digits in some areas.  Those temps are not just brutal on humans, but on the four-legged family members as well.  Louisiana Humane Society Director Jeff Dorson says with the mercury rising, so do the phone calls about pets being tied up in the heat.

Cut 9 (09) “…appreciate it too.”

Dorson recommends making sure pets are properly hydrated and if they do have to stay outside, looking into finding them shade or even getting them a small pool of water in which to help keep them cool.

Dorson says vets are already treating pets for burns to their paws from hot pavement.
Cut 10 (11) “…are in June.”

Dorson says the most egregious offense is leaving pets in cars unattended as it only takes a few minutes for the heat to cause organ failure and kill an animal.

A poll is out and making the rounds in major statewide media showing President Trump’s support in Louisiana is cratering, but a political analyst says there’s serious reason to doubt the poll’s accuracy.

UL Lafayette Political Science Professor Pearson Cross says the poll also shows Governor Edwards with a three to one lead over his closest Republican competitor, which doesn’t clear the commonsense test…

Cut 12 (09)   “…percent”

The poll by Verne Kennedy claims a margin of error of 4.1 percent.

The work is reportedly an independent commission, but Cross says the surprising low levels of support for prominent conservative politicians and policies may indicate the pollster was hired by a more left leaning source…

Cut 13 (12) “…no chance’”

One question shows Louisianans oppose a second term for the President 54 percent to 37 percent.

Another shock in the poll was the data indicating Louisianans oppose the President’s border wall plan 49 percent to 41 percent. Cross says sometimes you have to take poll results with a grain of salt.

Not a great night for LSU basketball in the draft though. Tremont Waters did manage to get picked up by the Celtics in the second round with the 51stoverall selection, but former five-star recruit, two-year Tiger Naz Reid fell out of the draft completely after being thought of as a lottery selection in the pre-season. Reid underwhelmed at the athletic testing portion of the combine, and reportedly scared away teams with his inconsistent effort levels throughout the season.

Reid eventually found a potential pathway into the NBA when the Minnesota Timberwolves negotiated a two year “two-way” contract that will see the former Tiger likely spend most of the first year or two of his career playing in the G-League with the Wolves evaluate his progress.

Saints Defensive End Cameron Jordan congratulated 1st overall pick Zion Williamson before the draft, telling him to just embrace the community, and if you buy all the way in, the community will too.
