The Tangipahoa Parish father who’s vehicle crash resulted in the death of his five year old son pleads guilty to negligent homicide. 55-year old Toney Gallo was sentence to 18 years in prison with credit for time served. The crash happened in March of 2018. His son died two months later of severe head trauma.

The Saints and Michael Thomas agreed to a contract that makes the wide out the highest-paid receiver in NFL history. Sources say the deal is worth 100-million dollars over five years. The Voice of the Saints, Zach Streif, (Streef) says it’s a huge contract, but it should not prevent the team from re-signing some of its other young stars

Louisiana Tech is investing in building new residence halls and parking by fall of 2021 as the student body continues to expand. Louisiana Tech is investing in building new residence halls and parking by fall of 2021 as the student body continues to expand year to year.

Louisiana Tech assistant VP for student advancement Dickie Crawford says 600 new beds will be created, along with a thousand new parking spaces in and around the campus.

The new halls will mean Harper, Mitchell, and Cottingham halls will be discontinued by 2021.

Crawford says they’re having to pull off the aggressive expansion to meet the needs of a student body that has experienced significant growth in recent years.

Crawford says the old halls aren’t unsafe or falling apart, but they are outdated and with interest in the Ruston institution growing, they’re pushing to show a more modern face.

Tech experienced some damage to facilities during the tornado earlier this year, most of which was done to athletic fields and stadiums.

For years the Louisiana Treasury Department has returned unclaimed money to folks, and now they’re looking to do the same thing for lost military medals.

Louisiana has an above-average rate of military service, and Treasurer John Schroder says the proposal flew through the Legislature unanimously.

The legislation was sponsored by Abbeville Senator Bob Hensgens.

The law would allow the Department to collect lost medals and military paperwork from depositories and return them to the owner, or next of kin.

That’s Schroder, who says they’ll have to get together and work out the details with banks, safety deposit box companies, and other groups before starting to process.

Generally, when the Department finds “unclaimed property”, they just send you a check, but Schroder says they’ll be learning how to take good care of these precious items before sending them out.

The medals and paperwork would have to had to sit unclaimed for five years before they could be turned over to the state for distribution.

Senator Bill Cassidy releases a paid leave proposal for new parents.  Cassidy says with the plan, new parents would be allowed to take $5,000 advance on the child tax credit, reducing the $2,000 annual benefit to $1,500 for ten years after the birth or adoption of a child.  Cassidy says the proposal presents great benefits to families.

It’s a bipartisan effort as the Republican is working alongside Arizona Democrat Senator Kyrsten Sinema.  Cassidy says sometimes a new child may create a situation where a mother must quit working and survive on public assistance.

Cassidy says the proposal will also improve the relationship between the parents and the child.

The Baton Rouge Area Chamber releases their 2019 legislative and gubernatorial election platform that calls for a major focus on making south Louisiana competitive for business growth with reinvestment in infrastructure.  BRAC Senior VP of Economic Competitiveness Liz Smith says they’d like to see a special session called in 2020.

Smith says the platform also lays out a plan to pay for infrastructure needs via a gas tax.

In addition to a new bridge to cross the Mississippi River in the Baton Rouge area, Smith says in order to make south Louisiana a more competitive super-region, a high-speed rail system is needed to connect Baton Rouge to New Orleans.

Now that LSU football has its newly renovated operations building, LSU basketball coach Will Wade says the Tigers basketball practice facility needs a major upgrade. Wade says he’s met with Tiger Athletic Foundation officials and they’ve raised about 25-percent of what they need

The 28-million dollar renovation to the football ops building gives players a chance to work out, eat, sleep, play video games, study and meet with coaches in one building. Wade says he’s looking for the same type of efficiency for his basketball players and recruits are looking for that as well

LSU’s basketball practice facility opened in 2010. But Wade says it doesn’t include a weight room and he would like to improve the players’ locker room and office space for coaches. Wade says the upgrade will cost 15-million dollars

48-year-old James William Eaton of West Monroe is in jail after posing online as a woman and luring another man to drive from California to Ouachita Parish thinking he was marrying that woman.  When questioned, Eaton allegedly told deputies he did not know the victim and never received anything from him. But Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Glen Springfield says investigators found a box mailed to Eaton’s alter ego “Rose Williams” from the victim.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was Joseph Pardue, who was wearing his seat belt, sustained moderate injuries. The crash remains under investigation.

The Saints have made some roster moves today, dropping running back veteran Buck Allen and defensive back Chris Campbell, while picking up former Washington running back Robert Kelly and practice squad player Travin Dural.

Kelly had a great start to his career, running for over 700 yards his rookie year and appeared to be set to take on a featured roll for the teams before falling out of favor and eventually off of the roster. He’s viewed a bigger, bruising back.

Dural was originally signed to the practice squad out of LSU in 2017, but spent the 2018 season on IR.

LSU football is off to a strong start for their recruiting… in the 2021 season. Four-star defensive end of out Texas Landyn Watson tweeted that he’s planning on joining the Purple and Gold. Watson is a junior at Hutto High, and is already clocking in at 6’3 240 pounds as the no. 11 weakside defensive end of the class according to 247 Sports, and the number 33 overall prospect.

LSU’s basketball team has picked up former Southeastern Louisiana University guard Parker Edwards, a former St. Pauls of Covington star to fill a roster spot left open by Will Reese, who is leaving the program to focus on an internship. Edwards is best known for putting on a show against the Tigers last season in the opener against SLU, dropping 25 points on 6 of 8 from behind the arc. Coach Will Wade says he’ll be a great addition.

Former New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu will appear at the Democratic Presidential debate tonight. He’ll be a commentator for CNN. Landrieu is the Cable News Network’s newest hire. The debate among democrats aiming for the White House is being held in in Detroit. (The debate begins at 7pm)

House Republican Chairman Lance Harris says he’s seeing a lot of support for Congressman Ralph Abraham for Governor in his Alexandria based district. After the Alexandria Republican’s attempt in the last session to roll back a 2018 sales tax failed, he got a call from the Congressman, who vowed, if elected, that he would get that effort over the finish line.

A West Monroe man is in jail after pretending to be a woman online and convincing another man to drive from California to Ouachita Parish.  Kevin Barnhart has the story.

A 62-year old Coushatte (Coo-shot-ah) man is facing several molestation charges of a juvenile. The Red River Parish Sheriff’s office received a complaint earlier this month from a victim and obtained forensic evidence to support the claim. Steven Pierce Weir (Ware) was a basketball coach and teacher at Riverdale Academy. The victim told police them the abuse began when he was a student in 2006 and continue after his graduation in 2012. Weir is in jail awaiting bond.

A new study from LSU Pennington Biomedical researchers indicates that fat stored in unhealthy locations doubles a colorectal cancer patient’s risk of death within seven years.  Director of the Cancer Metabolism Program Dr. Justin Brown says there are two places fat gets stored in the belly, under the skin and deep in the abdomen.

An Alexandria woman accused of murdering her 5-year-old daughter has been declared “clinically deceased” a few days after attempting suicide while in custody at the Rapides Parish Jail.

Rapides Sherriff William Hilton says they’re reviewing the incident, but it appears all policies were adhered to, but 24-year-old Jasmine Anderson’s lawyer Chad Guillot says it’s unacceptable.

Anderson brought her daughter to a hospital on July 17th, saying she was injured in a car accident, but authorities say her story changed several times, and the wounds appeared suspicious.

Guillot says he’s still trying to get more information about the incident but considering Anderson was in a mental facility when she was initially arrested, the jail should have taken more precautions.

Reports say Anderson began the attempt a few minutes after a cell check.

Anderson is still on life support machinery at the hospital, but Guillot says that’s only because she was a registered organ donor.

Concerns have also been raised about the death of Anderson’s husband in 2016, and the bottle cap choking death of her four-year-old son earlier this year in April.

Private high schools also known as “select” schools have formed a new organization within the Louisiana High School Athletic Association to help coordinate their efforts to host their own championship events in football, basketball, baseball and softball.  The sub-organization has raised fears that private schools plan to separate entirely from the LHSAA, but Interim CEO of Louisiana Select Association JP Kelly says that’s not the case…

The Select sports that will host their own championship are football, baseball, basketball, and softball.

The organization is pushing schools to agree to a guaranteed location for championships. Kelly says a return to the Superdome is one possibility, so are a few colleges…

With football right around the corner, Kelly says they’re pushing to find championship venues for each division ASAP.

66 of the 71 Select schools voted in favor of the organization’s creation. There are 108 total Select schools.

Kenner Representative Julie Stokes announces she is not seeking reelection this fall.  Stokes was first elected to the House seat in 2013, and in 2017 ran for state treasurer, but pulled out of the race following a breast cancer diagnosis.  Stokes unsuccessfully ran for Secretary of State in 2018.  Now, she says she’ll be spending more time with family.

Of all of her legislative accomplishments, Stokes says her actions to help those afflicted with cancer are the most rewarding.
