Louisiana said goodbye to former Governor Kathleen Blanco in Baton Rouge today.

The ACLU sues the Ascension Parish Sheriff, accusing the department of detaining a US Citizen for four days for immigration review because he was Hispanic. In August of 2018 Ramon Torres was arrested on a DUI charge.  Legal Director Katie Schwartzmann says Torres owned a home and worked in Baton Rouge and had several items on him at the time of his arrest that demonstrated his citizenship.

Sheriff Bobby Webre responded saying “I dispute these press claims by ACLU lawyers and will offer a rigorous defense in court.”
The state’s most powerful business lobby, The Louisiana Association of Business and Industry, endorses both Republican contenders in the Governor’s race. Political Analyst Bernie Pinsonat says getting a LABI endorsement doesn’t necessarily directly influence many voters, but it does open a lot of fundraising floodgates for a pro-business candidate.

Governor John Bel Edwards spoke at an interfaith ceremony celebrating the life of former Governor Kathleen Blanco at St. Joseph Cathedral in Baton Rouge today. Edwards says Blanco’s impact on the state will be felt for many years to come, adding she had found peace in her final days.

The state’s most powerful business lobby, The Louisiana Association of Business and Industry, endorses both Republican contenders in the Governor’s race. It’s a change of pace for the political powerhouse who did not endorse in the primary last year. Political Analyst Bernie Pinsonat says LABI has little to lose from going hard after the Governor.

An Interfaith service is underway at St Joseph’s Cathedral in Downtown Baton Rouge honoring former Governor Kathleen Blanco. After the service Blanco’s casket will be escorted by Louisiana State Police to the state Capitol. Her former protective service detail will carry her casket up the front steps which will be lined by members of her cabinet and staff. She will then lie in state for public viewing from 1 until 6pm.

Commissioner of Higher Ed and former Blanco Aide Kim Hunter Reed says they’ve received interest in the public ceremonies from people young and old from across the state.

Governor Edwards has ordered flags be flown at half-staff until Blanco’s funeral ends Saturday night in Lafayette.

Instead of choosing one of the two major Republicans running for Governor against incumbent Democratic Governor Edwards, the business lobbying group LABI (LA-BEE) is supporting both Congressman Ralph Abraham and businessman Eddie Rispone. In 2015 the LABI did not endorse anyone in the primary because their candidate lost to Edwards in the runoff.

After a five-year-old was found with a bag of cocaine and two bags of crack at a Slidell school Wednesday, two adults are under arrest. Detective Daniel Seuzeneau says they searched the child’s home and arrested 51-year-old Ellis Cousin and 23-year-old Angelica Stanley. They are charged with Possession with Intent to Distribute, Paraphernalia, and Cruelty to a Juvenile. Suezeneau says thankfully no one was exposed to the bag’s contents.

An interfaith service honoring former Governor Kathleen Blanco is being airing on Louisiana Public Broadcasting. The service is being held at St. Joseph’s Cathedral. Diocese of Baton Rouge spokesperson Deacon Dan Borne (Bor-nay).

The state will remember former Governor Kathleen Blanco today, first with an interfaith gathering at St. Joseph Cathedral beginning at 9:30.  Diocese of Baton Rouge spokesperson Deacon Dan Borne (Bor-nay) says about half of the cathedral is reserved for family but the public seating will likely fill fast.

A 70-year old Ruston man is behind bars now after a joint investigation with Louisiana State Police and the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office solves a 2004 cold case. Lonnie Frazier Jr. was a person of interest in the missing person investigation of Cheryl Williams but there was insufficient evidence. But now they’ve found enough evidence to book Frazier for second degree murder. He was arrested Wednesday and is being held in the Lincoln Parish Detention Center on a bond of one-million dollars.

The first of several services for late Governor Kathleen Blanco happens this morning with an interfaith ceremony at St. Joseph Cathedral in Downtown Baton Rouge. Diocese of Baton Rouge spokesperson Deacon Dan Borne (Bor-nay) says a flag will be draped over the casket by Governor Edwards and State Police, an opening prayer, then three scripture readings.

Public memorials for former Governor Kathleen Blanco begin tomorrow in Baton Rouge. The state’s first elected female governor died Sunday. Her leadership was questioned during Hurricane Katrina, but in an interview to mark the 10-year anniversary of the storm, Blanco told the Louisiana Radio Network the storm overwhelmed the state’s capabilities

Attorney General Jeff Landry says the reported armed intruder was actually one of his officers who was on campus to instruct students about social media responsibility. The alert message of “Run, Hide, Fight” left many people shaken. LSU spokesperson Ernie Ballard says it’s encouraged by the federal Homeland Security department.

A company that employs 750 people in Minden is threatening to relocate to east Texas if the state does not upgrade several bridges in the area that have structural problems. St. Landry Parish Sheriffs are trying to identify a body they discovered left just off Highway 10 in the Beggs area. Authorities say it appears to be an African American female in her early 20s. Sheriff Bobby Guidroz says the cause of death is unknown at this time, but the body did have one specific identifying item.
