Drew Brees will be out six weeks after injuring his hand against the Rams on Sunday. The Black and Gold QB tore ligament in his hand early in the game when one of his pass attempts was contested by Rams star defensive tackle Aaron Donald. Brees is set to have surgery soon and hopes to return in time for the team’s first matchup this year against the Falcons Sunday, November 10th.

There are four constitutional amendments on the October ballot and voters will need to do their homework to understand their purpose. The fourth amendment option may surprise people: it deals with allowing the City of New Orleans to give property tax exemptions for affordable housing. So why is it up for a statewide vote?

That’s Public Affairs Research Council Policy Director Steve Procopio who says supporters say it would give the city another tool to fight exploding housing costs.

Plant-based shrimp could be the next big thing if Tyson Foods recent investment into New Wave Foods is any indication. Shrimp is a big economic driver for the state’s seafood industry and are the most consumed seafood on the planet. Ag Commissioner Mike Strain says any attempt to market the new product as shrimp is not allowed under state law.

The product is aiming to launch next year and look like a peeled, deveined and tailless shrimp. 

The state continues to collect data on the impact of aquatic life in southeast Louisiana as a result of the record long opening of the Bonnet Carre Spillway. Oyster populations will take years to regenerate. Department of Wildlife and Fisheries biologist Harry Blanchet says the brown shrimp harvest was down as well, but that population can bounce back much quicker.

A statewide charity is encouraging those hunters that need to clear their freezers of last year’s bounty to donate that meat to those that may be less fortunate. Hunters for the Hungry executive director Julie Grunewald says they are hoping to double the already massive amounts of donations received last year.

Louisiana will have a projected 500-million dollar surplus for the last fiscal year, up from the previous estimate of 300 million dollars. Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne says there are two reasons for the rising surplus, starting with the 2017 federal tax reform.

Critics say the surplus is evidence that the Governor’s .45 percent sales tax increase was ultimately unnecessary.

The Louisiana Craft Brewers Guild wants to see more local brews sold at Tiger Stadium. Currently, the only Louisiana beer on sale inside Death Valley is Abita’s Strawberry Lager. And Guild executive director Cary Koch says they got the numbers to prove that the beers they would have in the stadium would do even better for sales, profit margins, and revenue.

New campaign finance reports show Edwards raised one-point-seven-million dollars in the latest quarter and has nearly six-million dollars available as he tries to avoid a runoff. Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne says they plan to use some of the funds to help replenish the state’s depleted “Rainy Day” savings fund, which was drained in the Jindal years.

Livingston Parish Sheriff’s deputies arrest a man after taking two school buses for a spin. Kevin Barnhart has the story.

The Louisiana Department of Education has revoked the license at Assembly Kidz Care in West Monroe and pulled funding after an investigation shows the mistreatment of several three year olds. Police have charged 48-year old Yolanda Jackson with felony cruelty to juveniles. Video was obtained showing Jackson dropping, grabbing and dragging children.  She’s also been accused of hitting and shaking children.

A Sam Houston High School Student is behind bars after threatening to shoot his fellow classmates in Moss Bluff. Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson Kim Myers says they might not know if the student intended to carry thru with the threat or not but classmate took the threat seriously and reported it to the school resource officer.

The teen was booked at the Juvenile Detention Center and charged with terrorizing.

The National Hurricane Center says it looks like are developing from a wave north of Haiti. National Weather Service Slidell Meteorologist Tim Destri says if Louisiana sees any rain from the system, the timing likely will not impact any college football plans for this weekend.

A Denham Springs man is behind bars now after a late night joy-ride on two school buses. Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard says the suspect 30-year-old Zachary Anderson’s image was captured on camera on one of the buses. Ard says a motive is unclear.

A warrant was issued, but Anderson posted on Facebook that he would turn himself in, before doing so.

 

A fifteen year old Sam Houston High School Student is behind bars after threatening to shoot his fellow classmates. Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson Kim Myers says fortunately students reported the incident to the school resource officer.

Trust for America’s Health says the U-S Obesity rates are at historic highs. Louisiana’s adult obesity rate is at 37-percent, the fourth highest in the nation. President of T-F-A-H John Auerbach recommends sugary drink taxes and expanded SNAP and WIC nutrition support programs as ways to combat the epidemic.

National Weather Service Slidell Meteorologist Tim Destri says the developing system in the Atlantic is expected to move to northwest towards Florida. Destri says this particular system is expected to have minimal effects on Louisiana, but could bring some rain if the storm tracks more westward.

The latest from the National Hurricane Center has the current system in the Atlantic with a 70 percent chance of developing into a tropical depression in the next day or two as the system moves toward the northwest through Bahamas and toward the Florida Peninsula.  It’s also expected to bring plenty to rain and wind to the already battered Bahamas.
