The Philadelphia Phillies handled the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday. Former LSU great Aaron Nola was a key factor for the Phillies success as he threw 5 and 2⁄3 ‘s innings with nine strikeouts and only one RBI allowed against the top team in the MLB this season . Nola improves to 2 and 0 this postseason with the win and the Phillies can advance to the NLCS for the second straight season with a win tonight.

One of the key components of LSU’s new defensive scheme has been the transition of secondary swiss army knife Sage Ryan. The former Lafayette Christian Star has played safety, nickel corner, and in the win over Missouri started at cornerback. Ryan is not afraid to take on this new role and credits many people for his successful transition.

The NBA’s preseason began Tuesday and the Pelicans opened with a loss to the Orlando Magic in the Smoothie King Center. Although the game was a loss for the Pelicans, Head Coach Willie Green is optimistic after the speed and space that the Pelicans created for Zion Williamson during the 5 and a half minutes the star got play center. The change helped the Pelicans double their lead in the first quarter.

A school specifically designed for kindergarten through fifth-grade students on the Autism Spectrum in Monroe will begin the enrollment process next month. The Academy of Collaborative Education has received approval from BESE. ACE Director Joellen Freeman says the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder is high and ACE added therapeutic interventions and therapies that autistic students need.

39-year-old Joey Clement of Thibodaux was sentenced yesterday for the fatal DWI car crash that killed three Nicholls State University students two years ago. Clement will serve 85 years in prison.

At least 22 Americans are among those killed in the attacks on Israel. Barry Weinstein, Rabbi for Temple Sinai in Lake Charles who has family living in Israel says he is praying deeply for Israel’s safety.  Civilians young and old are among at least 1200 killed.

A new public charter school designed for children on the Autism Spectrum has received approval to from BESE. The Academy of Collaborative Education will begin accepting applications next month. ACE Director Joellen Freeman says ACE will be a tuition-free public charter school.

The school will house two classrooms per grade and a total of 96 students. The school will serve kindergarten through fifth-grade students in Monroe starting in July of 2024.

Scalise beat out Jim Jordan from Ohio for the GOP nomination. Election Day is Saturday and voters will cast a ballot for Constitutional Amendment Three which requires state lawmakers to use 25 percent of any state surplus to pay retirement debt for the four state retirement systems. The amendment’s author, Mandeville Representative Richard Nelson says it’s time the state takes a serious approach towards paying off retirement debt…

Small business optimism nationwide declined slightly in September due to concern over inflation. National Federation of Independent Business State Director Dawn McVea says sales growth has slowed, leaving owners with limited options for financial relief.

Optimism fell by half a point in September to 90.8 marking the 21st consecutive month below the 49-year average of 98.

Bankrate Senior Industry Analyst Ted Rossman says a third of holiday shoppers expect inflation to impact their buying habits. He says early shoppers are looking for coupons, discounts, and sales.

Edwards was presented with a letter signed by more than 100 faith leaders asking him and the Pardon Board to grant clemency hearings for all of the inmates awaiting execution.

The University of Louisiana System Board has delayed hiring their own President Jim Henderson, as Louisiana Tech’s next president to allow public input. Henderson says it’s just procedural and practical ramifications of having a system president interested in a university presidency.

Henderson has served as President of ULS for nearly seven years,  He says Louisiana Tech is dear to him for several reasons. Henderson would replace current Tech President Les Guice, who announced his retirement last month. Henderson will give up his role as system leader if he’s named Louisiana Tech’s next president at a special meeting in less than three weeks.

There may soon be a black bear season in the Bayou State. A hearing will be held at The Louisiana Wildlife Commission’s meeting next month on the issue. After being on the endangered species list, Commission member Joe McPherson says it will be a limited hunt so not many animals will be taken initially.

Louisiana’s black bear was removed from the endangered species list in 2015. McPherson says if the commission chooses to bring black bear hunting season back it wouldn’t be until the 2024-2025 season.

DeSoto Parish Clerk of Court Jeremy Evans has been arrested less than a week before the October 14th election on two counts of electioneering for violating a law specific to campaigning in nursing homes. Evans posted photographs to his social media page last month during visits to two nursing homes in Mansfield wearing a shirt with a “re-elect Jeremy Evans” logo. This is not the first time Evans has been accused of a violation in connection to an election.

University of Louisiana System, President Jim Henderson wants to be president of Louisiana Tech and will be interviewing with his own board. The UL board voted to suspend rules requiring a competitive search and will only interview Henderson for the Job but they are delaying the decision to allow time for public input. Final decision is expected on October 25th.

 

Kaylee Timonet’s (Tim-oh-net) scholarship endorsement was revoked and she was kicked her off student government after her principal saw a video of her dancing at a private party, Walker High School Principal Jason St. Pierre posted on social media that he apologized and has reinstated the scholarship endorsement, but Timonet disagrees.

St. Pierre is taking leave for the remainder of the school year.

 

The death of a 42 year old man while in the custody of St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s office is investigation. Hector Ruiz-Santos was arrested Sunday night, accused of battery on a police officer, resisting a police officer with force-non aggravated, and disturbing the peace-violent tumultuous manner. He was placed in the back of a patrol unit and transported to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center for booking but upon arrival Ruiz-Santos was unresponsive. CPR was administered and an ambulance responded.

A $180 thousand grant is helping The State Fire Marshal provide smoke alarms to Louisianans during Fire Prevention Week. Spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue says this will give families access to the most critical emergency alert equipment that could save lives.

The Jackson Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating two fatal shootings that happened within hours of each other on Friday night that may be related. The victim in the first shooting at Circle K is the son of Jonesboro-Hodge football coach Terrance Blakenship. The victim in the second shooting two-hours later is 30-year-old Devontre Jackson of Grambling. Sheriff Andy Brown says the second shooting was the result of an argument that started at the Jonesboro-Hodge homecoming game. Brown says it’s rare to have a fatal shooting in Jackson Parish, let alone two within hours of each other…
