A New Orleans judge has ordered an anti-Edwards ad to be taken off the air after a suit from the Edwards campaign alleged the TV spot was “demonstrably false”. The ad alleged Edwards gave a fellow West Point alum a substantial state contract. The Edwards campaign is celebrating, calling the ad disgraceful, but the spots’ backers say they plan to appeal the restraining order, claiming the ad is “100 percent truthful.”

The state Department of Environmental Quality receives two new Mobile Air Monitoring Labs, also known as MAMLs. Assistant secretary for environmental assessment Roger Gingles says the two units are mounted on a 35 foot truck chassis with a custom body to house equipment and supplies.  They will supplement an aging existing unit that is used for similar functionality.  However, with the advanced technology the two new units offer, they are quite unique.

Bogalusa is now home to the 50 bed Woodlake Addiction Recovery Center, which may be able to help over 1,000 patients a year in one of the areas hardest hit by the opioid epidemic.  Bogalusa Representative Malinda White says the state needs to invest more in these kinds of holistic approaches to the crisis, and society at large needs to become more understanding of how the struggles faced by addicts.

Edgewater Research conducted a similar survey in October after the primary and Edwards had a four-percentage point lead. Edgewater Research pollster Doctor Edward Chervenak says more Republicans participated in this latest survey…

It’s been nearly three decades since David Duke ran for Governor, but the former KKK Grand Wizard’s legacy remains a point of contention, even in this year’s gubernatorial run-off. GOP gubernatorial challenger Eddie Rispone called a recent radio ad linking him to David Duke “disgusting”, but Duke says like many Republicans, they now share many of the same policies.

The state broke some daily low records during this morning’s freeze, but good news is State Climatologist Barry Keim says temps will rebound into the low 50s statewide this afternoon.

Bogalusa Representative Malinda White says it’s sorely needed as Washington Parish has a ten times higher rate than the national average of babies born with addiction, and  the crisis hits Bogalusa particularly hard because of widespread poverty in the area, so having access right in the city is a major boon.

The American Lung Association’s “State of Lung Cancer” 2019 report indicates Louisiana has one of the lowest five-year survival rates in the nation at 17%.  LSU pulmonary critical care professor of medicine Dr. Stephen Kantrow says the alarming stat comes at a time when there has been so much progress in the treatment and screening for the disease.

19% of cases in Louisiana are caught in an early stage when five-year survival rates are much higher, compared to 22% on the national level.  Louisiana is ranked 41 of 48.

Among the recommendations in prevention of lung cancer, Kantrow says combatting smoking is still a big part of prevention.  Across the nation, smoking rates have declined.

Kantrow adds in Louisiana, there are vulnerable populations who continue to smoke for whom there are barriers in the access to healthcare.

For longtime smokers, Kantrow recommends a CT scan screening annually.  Low-dose CT scans among those who qualify can reduce the death rate by up to 20%.

An early stage diagnosis can often be treated with surgery and has a much higher survival rate at 58%

Plans have been finalized for the eventual removal of the collapsed Hard Rock Hotel site in New Orleans. The site’s developer 1031 Canal Development LLC say they’ve worked out a plan that involves 24 hours security, hiring of a national engineering firm, and also a plan to create a temporary access option for the historic Saenger Theater, which is right next door and has been closed since the collapse.

If you think it’s chilly out right now, just wait for tonight: low temperatures are expected to hit the 20s for most of the state, with lows in the low 30s near the coast. Good news is at least the hard freeze is not expected to stay for long. National Weather Service meteorologist Robert Ricks says temperatures will be out of the 20s by tomorrow afternoon.

A West Monroe woman is charged with cruelty to a juvenile after leaving her one-year-old child with strangers.  Deputies later located 28-year-old Tiera Mooney in a small wooded area not far from the residence. Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s spokesperson Glen Springfield says the suspect was also charged with criminal trespassing.

Springfield says a motive is unclear and bail has not been set.

Ten-million dollars in hurricane recovery money will go towards building new homes to replace the old FEMA trailers that have been at Camp Beauregard in Pineville since 2005.
