A Mississippi man is $1.2 million richer after purchasing a jackpot-winning Louisiana Lotto ticket in Kentwood. 72-year-old Darryl Jordan won the prize during the Wednesday night drawing. Mississippi now has its own lottery, but Lottery spokesperson Dustin Annison says that won’t keep Jordan from playing in Louisiana as he has done for years.

A Calhoun man is in jail accused of stealing a vehicle, holding his girlfriend captive for days and beating her multiple times with a baseball bat at various locations.  Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s spokesperson Glen Springfield says if it wasn’t for the quick response of witnesses calling authorities, this situation could have seen a different conclusion.

The victim was covered in bruises and had a broken tooth. The suspect, 22-year-old Michael Vaughn, was already on probation and now faces four felonies.

A State Fire Marshal’s K-9 is dead and Corporal Robert Fain from Bossier Parish is now facing charges of Malfeasance after an investigation revealed his K-9 partner died of a lack of food and water. Executive Director of the Louisiana Humane Society Jeff Dorson says it’s evidence that law enforcement animal handler need better oversight.

Governor Edwards calls for further increases in high ed spending in next year’s budget. Last year the Legislature OK’d a 47 million dollar boost, but UL System President Jim Henderson wants a 156-million-dollar boost to attract more high level teaching talent, and guarantee the solvency of TOPS.

Fain is also facing charges for allegedly claiming fraudulent hours and expenses related to working with the dog. Executive Director of the Louisiana Humane Society Jeff Dorson says Fain should receive a stiff sentence…

Three men are cited for transporting a deer carcass from Texas to Louisiana as part of the state’s effort to prevent the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease into local deer populations.  LDWF Deer Program Manager Johnathan Bordelon says the disease has been detected in 26 other states, including the three bordering Louisiana.

The anti-vax movement has made a lot of public hay over the issue, but JMC Publisher John Couvillon says his poll shows only three percent of adults disagree that vaccines are important for public health.

LSU takes on Georgia tomorrow for an SEC Championship game that could have major implications for the college football playoffs.

Tigers QB Joe Burrow understands the significance of Saturday’s matchup and says it’s incredibly important to keep LSU’s perfect season alive with another win.

LSU are 6.5 favorites in the contest, up from four-point favorites earlier in the week.

Georgia features the best defense LSU has played all year. The Bulldogs have the second-best scoring defense in the nation, and Burrow says it’s largely due to the work of Richard LeCounte III and JR Reed.

One place where the dogs aren’t so dominant; pass rush. Georgia has only nabbed 26 sacks this year, below LSU’s 30.

LSU made waves last year disposing of the then 5th ranked Georgia 36-16 in Tiger Stadium. Burrow was only 15/30 for 200 yards and no touchdowns in that game, but this year is a whole other animal.

Support drops to 91 percent agreement when those surveyed were asked if mandatory immunization should be required for children to attend public schools.

Generic support for vaccines may be high, but only just over half of respondents think it should be illegal to refuse to get your kid vaccinated.

23 percent of respondents thought vaccines often cause serious side effects.

Savoie’s Sausage and Food Products announces a 12.7-million dollar expansion at its St. Landry Parish production facility.  President Frederick Lafleur says the expansion will take about eight months to complete and it will allow them to nearly double their production.

Lafleur says once construction is completed, he’ll hire six more workers. They currently have 100 employees. The project is also expected to generate an estimated 172 construction jobs.
