This is the time of year when people gather to spend time with friends and family and gather at shopping centers to get bargains. Unfortunately, it’s also a prime opportunity to share germs. Ochsner primary care physician Edit Mbagu (M-bag-woo) says there ways to be a healthy shopper.

A newborn child is dead following a Christmas night wreck in Sulphur.  Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Commander James McGee says the SUV carrying the child, the driver and two other passengers was traveling west on High Hope Road around 10:30 last night when the crash occurred.

Deputies with the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office say when a man broke up with his girlfriend on Christmas Eve, she assaulted him and then crashed her vehicle into an assisted living facility. According to police, 19-year old Yesnia Guzman put her two children into her vehicle left at a high rate of speed then crashed through a fence, and drove right into an assisted living facility, hitting two beds where residents were sleeping. Guzman was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

Republicans made Louisiana’s high car insurance rates a campaign issue this year, so lawmakers are predicting efforts to try to limit damages awarded in car accident lawsuits in the 2020 legislative session. Business groups are pushing the “tort reform” proposals, saying Louisiana’s legal climate encourages people in accidents to sue insurance companies, thus driving up insurance rates. Critics counter there’s no such proof a change would lower rates.

St. Tammany Parish Sheriffs are reporting a disturbing incident in Slidell yesterday in which a 53-year-old man engaged in a domestic dispute that ended in his suicide. Authorities say the man punched his wife in the face, then turned around and shot his 15-year-old son in the arm before retreating to the garage and shooting himself.

Alexandria-based RoyOMartin announces plans to invest 25-million dollars into its oriented strand board site in Oakdale and its plywood manufacturing site in Chopin. Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain says this is great news coming from one of Louisiana’s biggest employers

A TopCashback.com survey shows only 17 percent of Americans usually get a holiday bonus, and just over half never receive holiday bonuses.  TopCashback spokesperson Rebecca Gramuglia says when asked if they were more likely to receive a pay raise or a bonus, Gramuglia says it’s far more common to see the bonus, if you see anything at all.

A TopCashback.com survey shows only 17 percent of Americans usually get a holiday bonus, and just over half never receive holiday bonuses. For those that do expect to receive a holiday bonus, Rebecca Gramuglia with TopCashback says about half of respondents’ plan on using it to help with Christmas shopping.
