LSU Health New Orleans Public Health Expert Dr. Benjamin Springgate says daylight saving time ends Sunday at 2 am and the annual shift in time may cause sleep deprivation and mood disturbances to increase. While sleep has an overall impact on your health, he says not everyone will be affected by the time change in the same way.

Days will continue to get shorter with sunset scheduled for 4:40 p.m. when daylight saving time ends on Nov. 5.

The Office of Tourism Celebration Gator float will make its third appearance in the 97th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade next year. Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser announced the two Bayou State musical artists that will also appear.

The Secretary of State’s Office is predicting voter turnout for the upcoming election to be at 15 percent.

Authorities have arrested 37-year-old Denise Law in the deadly beating of 66-year-old Melinda Reed. BRPD officers responded to a call of an unresponsive female Thursday afternoon. Sargent Darren Ahmed says it remains to be determined if mental illness played a role.

Authorities believe Law used a metal walker as a murder weapon. The investigation is ongoing.

Gaining an hour of sleep Sunday as standard time begins sounds like a win but sleep experts say the time shift in time can have unfavorable health effects on many people.  During standard time days become shorter. The Louisiana float has highlighted state tourism and encouraged an estimated 2.4 billion people to visit the Bayou State for the last two years. Nungesser believes the gator has been a good return on investment.

The southbound portion of Interstate 55 damaged by the 168-vehicle pileup that killed seven people in St. John the Baptist Parish will close Saturday from 7 am to 1 pm. Motorists are encouraged to use Old US 51 as an alternate route. The northbound lanes remain closed.

Early voting for the November 18 general election begins today and wraps up on November 11th. Polls open at 8:30 am and close at 6 pm until Saturday, November 11th, except for Sunday or next Friday which will be a state holiday because of Veterans Day. John Tobler with the Secretary of State’s office says every person in the state – no matter what parish has something on their ballot.

Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the death of 40-year-old Donovan Brooks in Bienville Parish. Sheriff John Ballance says they believe Brooks was killed in a gruesome dog attack.

Brooks’s remains were found on the property of the owners last Friday. Dog owners, 77-year-old Charlotte Hubbard, 22-year-old Shawn Hubbard, and 51-year-old Gerald Miller face negligent homicide and obstruction charges. 21-year-old Cameron Kelly is charged with accessory after the fact.

This Sunday at 2 am, get ready to return to daylight savings time. In 2020, Governor John Bel Edwards signed a bill that would make daylight saving time permanent in Louisiana but the House of Representatives has yet to act on a 2023 version of the bill. In the meantime, update your clocks in advance and adjust your sleep cycle.

Work to repair Interstate 55 where 168 vehicles piled up during a super fog mix in St. John the Baptist Parish late last month will take another two weeks to complete. I-55 northbound remains closed but Spokesperson Rodney Mallet says contractors will start repairs next week.

Mallet says they’ll need to shut down the southbound portion near the crash site for a six-hour period this weekend.

Governor John Bel Edwards and Colonel Lamar Davis officially broke ground on a new $100 million state-of-the-art State Police Crime Lab this morning. And while it’s called the State Police Crime Lab, Governor Edwards says 200 agencies statewide submit evidence in addition to LSP investigations.

The Louisiana Respiratory Virus Surveillance program is made up of a network of hospitals and clinical-based laboratories that submit data weekly.

It’s National Adoption Month and the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services and First Lady Donna Edwards honored 465 families who have adopted 619 children from foster care this year. DCFS Secretary Terri Ricks says the ultimate goal is to find safe and permanent homes and families for children through adoption.

The Saints are preparing for the Chicago Bears this Sunday and a major spark in their offense this season has been the improved play of Rashid Shaheed. Shaheed’s ability to capitalize on deep balls will have to be accounted for by a Bears defense that gives up 7.3 yards per pass and 262.3 passing yards per game.

The New Orleans Pelicans battled back from a 22 point deficit yesterday in order to defeat the Oklahoma City Thunder 110 to 106 in Oklahoma City. Louisianans can now track cases of COVID-19, influenza, and RSV statewide through the state Department of Health’s new respiratory virus dashboard. State Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter says Louisianans can also find the number of patients admitted each week with a respiratory virus.

Western, Northeast, and Southern regions of the Bayou State were identified as “hot spots.” 

A meeting to create rules and regulations for black bear hunting season is underway. The Louisiana Wildlife Commission says Black Bears in the northeastern region make up at least half of the state’s population. Monroe Senator Stewart Cathey credits hunters and fishermen as being the best conservationists. When the American-Alligator population in Louisiana was almost extinct he credits responsible outdoorsmen in the state.

Governor-Elect Jeff Landry announced his transition website today. Landry’s transition theme is one dream, one team, one Louisiana, so the transition website is oneteam.la. He says there’s a place on the website for the public to share their ideas on making the state better.

State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley says the 2022-2023 Advanced Placement results show Louisiana seniors have earned record achievement on their placement tests. Brumley says 41 percent of students earned a three or better on their AP exam.

Nearly nine thousand students who earned a three or better may be eligible for college credit courses that families will not have to pay for.

The Don’t Pollute the Boot state is now home to the first-ever Litter Institute in the country. Executive Director of Keep Louisiana Beautiful Susan Russell says the LSU Litter Institute will not only study the trash issue locally but across the nation to find solutions.

Louisiana Department of Education has released the 2022-2023 school year Advanced Placement results. AP data shows nearly 87 hundred high school seniors earned a three or better on their AP exam. Data also shows Louisiana Pre K-12 improved five places in the U-S News and World Report Rankings.

Since the pandemic, many Gen Z and Millennial workers have been willing to sacrifice more to get a shorter week than Gen X and Baby Boomer employees. According to a July Bankrate Survey, the majority of working Americans support a 4-day work week. Bankrate Analyst Sarah Foster says workers are beginning to rethink their priorities.

Deidra Druilhet with the Department of Transportation and Development says the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge has reached its golden anniversary and many Louisianans don’t know the history of its construction, or how it was dredged. She says Approximately 60-thousand vehicles use the bridge daily to cross the Atchafalaya River.
