The state is reporting 479 coronavirus cases and 10 deaths, the majority are in the New Orleans area of the state. The Federal government has pushed the tax deadline to July 15, no word on state taxes yet.

The state is working overtime to secure enough face masks for hospital workers, and respirators for potential patients ahead of what may be a surge in COVID-19 hospitalizations.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission executive director Ava Dejoie says the department has been inundated with unemployment assistance claims as many people have lost work due to COVID-19. The first checks are anticipated to be sent out next week. Dejoie says staffing of the department has been shifted from other divisions to help process the claims.

The maximum unemployment benefit is $247 per week.

Food banks across the nation are seeing a surge in those seeking assistance with the COVID-19 outbreak’s effect on the economy. Second Harvest serves 23 Parishes in the state including the greater New Orleans area and Lafayette,  Communications Director Jay Vise (Vice) says they are no different.

The crawfish industry is suffering major losses as the state goes into partial shutdown during the heart of crawfish season.

Vermillion Parish farmer Christian Richard says Lent is always their best time of the year, and having restaurant closings and social distancing in place at this time is painful for farmers…

The industry was already seeing lower than normal demand, and thus lower prices so far this year.

Richard says large social gatherings, like a traditional boil, maybe off-limits but if you’re craving crawfish the crop is still widely available, and easy to make at home with your largest pot or pan.

Richard says if the governor wants to help out farmers, he’d allow food stamp recipients to use their benefits to buy crawfish.

He adds it will be vital that peeling facilities are kept open so that this year’s crop can at least be frozen for the rest of the year.

Governor Edwards warns healthcare capacity in the New Orleans area could be surpassed within the next seven to ten days under a worst case COVID-19 spread scenario.

Edwards says it is early but the region’s trajectory of case growth is basically the same as Italy’s was in the same period of the outbreak.

New Orleans now rivals Seattle in per capita cases of COVID-19, and Edwards says the city is even beating other major metro areas in raw numbers.

Three state parks are being used to house people who are awaiting their coronavirus test results.  Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser says the test subjects that are being brought are those from nursing homes, the homeless, and people that just don’t have anywhere else to go.

Louisiana is now reporting 392 positive cases of COVID-19, and 10 deaths related to the virus, and the OMV is now closing all offices effective tomorrow as a result.

One of the newest reported cases is Saints head coach Sean Payton, who says he wasn’t feeling well so he went and got tested. The result came back positive despite him not running a fever.

All this COVID-19 concern has Louisianans flocking to gun stores, but Gun shops are finding it hard to keep their shelves stocked.

Sean Payton has released information that he has tested positive for COVID-19 Louisiana hospitals could be overwhelmed by COVID-19 patients in seven to ten days, Gov. John Bel Edwards told President Trump of the dire information on a televised conference call today. The bleak outlook is based on a series of new models Louisiana leaders reviewed this week that predicts how many total positive cases the state can expect in the coming days.

Dr. Tina Stefanski regional medical director of the Office of Public Health in Acadiana says Lafayette has just two cases and there’s no evidence of community spread.
