According to a UL-Lafayette study, Louisiana has one of the fastest growth rates of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the world. Dr. Gary Wagner, Acadiana Business Economist Endowed Chair at UL-Lafayette, has a few theories on why Louisiana is seeing a large rate of cases compared to other areas.

Governor Edwards issues a statewide shelter in place order and the closure of all “non-essential” businesses. Cases have been found in 36 parishes. Edwards says he’s counting on Louisianans even in parts of the state without a large confirmed number of cases to be unselfish and follow the order or we will replicate Italy’s deadly outcome.

Ochsner Health CEO Warner Thomas says their health system is prepared to handle a potential influx of COVID-19 patients. Thomas says their estimates show the system can handle patients without being overloaded, assuming every Louisianan heeds the Governor’s call to social distance.

Ochsner Health CEO Warner Thomas says its health system is prepared to handle a potential influx of COVID-19 patients. Despite reports of hospitals lacking personal protective equipment and not enough respirators, Thomas says they are in good shape right now.

Thomas says they are sourcing new beds to increase their capacity should a surge of patients arrive.

Edwards says two weeks ago we had zero COVID-19 cases. One week ago we had 91 confirmed cases. As of Sunday 837 confirmed cases and twenty deaths, a ten times increase in seven days.

As children prepare to venture into the world of online learning, the experts are recommending a few tips and tricks for making the transition away from the traditional classroom an easier one.  Head of Louisiana Virtual Charter Academy Danielle Scott says make sure children have a designated area for learning.

Safety Malcolm Jenkins is glad to be back with the Saints again. New Orleans selected Jenkins with the 14th overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft and helped the Saints win a Super Bowl in his rookie season. Jenkins spent his first five seasons in New Orleans and then went to Philadelphia for six seasons and won a Super Bowl with the Eagles. After he was cut by Philly, he signed a four-year deal to return to the Saints and he’s glad to be back

Fourteen people are dead due to Louisiana’s COVID-19 outbreak. A total of 537 cases have been discovered in the state. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has issued a “stay at home” order for the city.
The state is working overtime to secure enough face masks for hospital workers, and respirators for potential patients ahead of what may be a surge in COVID-19 hospitalizations. Matt Doyle has more.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission executive director Ava Dejoie says the department has been inundated with over 30-thousnad unemployment assistance claims this week, as many people have lost work due to COVID-19. Some are experiencing issues in trying to file claims and Dejoie recommends trying to do so in off-peak hours.

Food banks across the nation are seeing a surge in those seeking assistance with the COVID-19 outbreak’s effect on the economy. Second Harvest Food Bank spokesperson Jay Vise reassured those in need that as Americans we will get through the crisis and wants to encourage all of us to work together. Vise says if you can’t donate financially to a local food bank reach out and offer your time.

25 parishes now have reported cases of COVID-19 for a total of 479 positive tests and 13 deaths. This surge in COVID activity has prompted Governor Edwards to ask companies with a stockpile of N95 masks to call the Department of Economic Development and be generous in donating them to hospitals that are in need of personal protective equipment…

Unemployment insurance claims are skyrocketing. Louisiana Workforce Commission executive director Ava Dejoie says as of noon on Thursday, the department had received 30,000 new claims this week.

The statewide average for a gallon of regular gasoline has dipped to about $1.95.  COVID-19 economic impacts, as well as overproduction between OPEC and Russia, are two main factors.  AAA fuel analyst Don Redman says this isn’t the normal season for savings at the pump.

The price of a barrel of oil has collapsed, now hovering in the mid-20s, it’s lowest levels since the early 2000s.

COVID-19 cases are increasing with 479 positive tests statewide and now 12 deaths. One of the new victims was a 38 year old from Catahoula Parish, who authorities say had an underlying medical condition.

The President authorizes the Defense Production Act to ramp up production of critical personal protective gear and respirators as the state works to secure those resources locally. Governor Edwards says the state has enough space to house COVID cases, but before you get equipment, you need doctors and nurses to use it…

The state is reporting now reporting 12 deaths from the coronavirus, up from 10 and 479 cases.
