LaPolitics.com Publisher Jeremy Alford says the motivating drive behind the session is the Governor’s COVID health restrictions, but many lawmakers feel that even if the legislature acts to restrict the Governor’s power the issue will have to be settled in court.

Republican state lawmakers frustrated with Governor Edwards’ public health emergency restrictions appear likely to call for a special session that would reportedly begin September 28th. LaPolitics.com Publisher Jeremy Alford says the driving goal would be to overturn some of the Governor’s restrictions like capacity limits and the closure of bars by 11 PM, but it’s not clear whether they could muster the votes to do it…

Tropical Storm Beta looks like it’ll dump a few inches of rain on the state. State Climatologist Barry Keim says the rain will be on and off for the next few days but as long as Beta doesn’t produce huge amounts of rain over a short period of time, we should be fine.

Hurricane ravaged Cameron and Calcasieu are expected to see a 17 and 10 percent drop in 2021 revenue respectively. Other parishes seeing the largest declines in fiscal year 2021 are Orleans at 13 percent, Jefferson and Natchitoches at eight percent, and St. John, St. Tammany, and Beauregard at six percent.

A plane crash near Waco, Texas claims the lives of four Louisianans. They’ve been identified as 59-year-old Kenneth Hicks and 59-year-old Missy Lynn Hicks of Lafayette, and 59-year-old Phillip Ackal and 58-year-old Pauline Ackal of Natchitoches. The crash is under investigation and no cause has yet been determined.

LaPolitics.com publisher Jeremy Alford says frustration with the Governor’s current public health emergency is the driving factor here, and it is likely that some legislative effort will be made to override it. But he cautions that even if they manage to file an effort many lawmakers feel the issue will have to be settled in court.

Four Shreveport cops are indicated on negligent homicide in the April death of a mentally ill man who they beat severely, then allegedly left in the back of their squad car for 48 minutes without performing any medical intervention. 44-year-old Tommie McGlothen was in an altercation with a homeowner when officers arrived, and Family attorney James Carter says police were well aware of his mental condition due to incidents from earlier that day…

A coroner’s report showed McGlothen had a broken nose, jaw, and heavily swollen face after the encounter.

Louisiana Workforce Commission Secretary Ava Dejoie says because of the dual-threat to both the unemployed and employers it’s vital that Congress include unemployment trust fund relief in the next pandemic relief bill.

Video shows McGlothen, apparently handcuffed, on the ground resisting while officers beat him with a baton, kicked him, punched him, and tased him as he screams. After no longer moving the beating continues, and he is then stood upon his knees and kicked into the ground, lifted back up, and slammed into a squad car.
McGlothen was in an altercation with a homeowner when officers arrived, and Family attorney James Carter says police were well aware of his condition due to incidents from earlier that day…
