Potential 2023 Gubernatorial Race contenders Attorney General Jeff Landry and Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser are off to strong fundraising starts, Landry with two million dollars and Nungesser with a million in a half. Political Analyst Bernie Pinsonat says the two Republicans are early favorites.

Baton Rouge native, 29-year-old Hayley Arceneaux is set to become the first cancer survivor to ever get launched into space. She’ll be the chief medical officer aboard Inpiration4, the first all-civilian mission. Arceneaux, a spokesperson for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, calls it an inspirational moment for St. Jude’s kids.

President Joe Biden announces the feds will be covering a larger portion of the Hurricane Laura public assistance bill than was previously agreed. The portion of non-federal costs such as repair of public buildings, roads, and other infrastructure items will now be reimbursed at 90 percent, up from 75 percent.

A fatal shootout at a Gretna gun store over the weekend has shocked Jefferson Parish. The shooting spree by 27-year-old Jamal Williams began after Williams was asked to take his loaded gun out of the gun store and clear it, a common gun shop protocol. Sheriff Joe Lopinto says contrary to some reports there was no heated argument that preceded Williams beginning his spree and witnesses report he was not confrontational prior to the incident.

The only people involved in the shootout were seven store employees and Williams. No other bystanders fired a weapon.

It appears the brutal winter storm we just endured killed about a third of the state’s strawberry crop. Owner of Harris Farmers in Springfield, Trey Harris says it’s worse than the great December freeze back in 2017…

If you sustained winter storm damage the state would like you to fill out a form on damage-dot-la-dot-gov. Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Spokesperson Mike Steele says that reporting the damage will also help state officials determine where the most damage occurred.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office has released new details about a fatal shootout over the weekend at a Gretna gun store. Sheriff Joe Lopinto says 27-year-old Joshua Williams was asked by store employees to leave the store to unload a loaded gun he had brought. Video shows moments later, as Williams was standing in the store’s doorway seemingly about to leave he fires a shot out across the street, then fatally shoots his first victim.

The state’s winter-storm related low COVID reporting totals continued today with only 468 new reported cases. But the state’s daily death totals continue to remain low with only 11 new COVID related fatalities today, down from daily averages in the 40s last month. COVID hospitalizations also continue to decline, now down to 740.

For the first time since 1994, the LSU men’s basketball team hit the century mark in an SEC game as the Bayou Bengals blew out Auburn 104-80 on Saturday.  Five players scored in double figures, led by freshman Cam Thomas and his 27 points.  Trendon Watford had a double-double and so did Josh LeBlanc who had 12 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.  Coach Will Wade says it was a great team effort.

The New Orleans Pelicans grabbed an overtime win over the Boston Celtics last night 120-115.  The Pels were led offensively by Brandon Ingram who poured in a game-high 33 points.  Zion Williamson added a double-double with 28 points and 10 rebounds.

The ULM basketball team got a 78-66 victory over Little Rock yesterday in Monroe.

It was a tough day at the ballpark for the LSU baseball team as they lost to Air Force for the first time in school history yesterday 6 to 5.  The loss drops LSU’s record to 1-1 after winning the season opener on Saturday 6 to 1.  The Tigers only have 14 hits after two games and coach Paul Mainieri says the hitting will need to improve.

All three games against ULL and Tulane went to extra innings, with the Ragin Cajuns winning the series two games to one after a 9-7 victory yesterday after 12 innings.

Louisiana Tech’s baseball team blew out Air Force 18-1 last night.  They play LSU tonight.

The LSU men’s basketball team will host Auburn in Baton Rouge on Saturday at 3 p.m.  While Auburn sits at 11-11 on the season, they’ve played well lately led by point guard Sharife Cooper.  Auburn has a great transition offense and Wade says his team will need to be ready to defend after made baskets in order to slow them down.

The ULM-Little Rock men’s and women’s basketball doubleheaders is scheduled for Sunday the 21st and
Monday the 22th  in Monroe.  The games were pushed back due to winter storms that impacted travel.  Tip-off times are the same for both days, with the women playing at 1 p.m. followed by the men at 4.  General admission tickets are priced at 10 dollars for each doubleheader and are available through the ULM ticket office in the Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

Due to ongoing travel restrictions brought on by this week’s weather conditions, both basketball series for Louisiana Tech versus Middle Tennessee have been postponed.

The Nicholls State Colonels will begin their 2021 spring football season tonight as they host Lincoln University of Missouri at 6 p.m.  Nicholls will be looking to improve its 22-26 all-time record in season openers after a loss at Kansas State in 2019.  Coming off of two-straight Southland Conference championships, Nicholls was picked to repeat as champs in the spring season.

The Northwestern State football team has not played a game in 457 days and now the Demons will have to wait even longer, as Saturday’s season opener against Lamar has been postponed because of snow and ice-covered roads in Louisiana and Texas.  The game has been rescheduled for March 27th.  The Demons will now open the spring season against Nicholls on March 6th.

LSU baseball will begin the 2021 season tomorrow as they host Air Force in Alex Box stadium.  The Tigers will play Air Force again on Sunday before taking on Louisiana Tech on Monday to close out the weekend series.  The weekend tournament originally included Notre Dame but a Covid-19 outbreak forced the Fighting Irish to stay home.  The series was also pushed back a day due to the winter storm that impacted the area.

K-12 teachers and those 55 and older with certain medical conditions will be added to the list of eligable vaccine receipients Monday. That’s nearly a half million more eligable state residents but Governor Edwards thinks we have the supply now to start opening things up…

AAA Fuel Analyst Don Redman warns Louisianans to fill up their gas tanks now because we could be experiencing low gas supply due to the winter storms.

He says those storms are resulting in increase fuel costs for drivers. A gallon of regular is up to 2.28 a gallon for a statewide average. That’s a three cent overnight jump and a fifteen cent jump month to month.

Nearly half a million more Louisianans will be eligible to get vaccinated starting Monday, that includes K-12 teachers and those 55 and older with certain health conditions. Governor Edwards says this decision was made after the state was told we’re getting a big bump in our vaccine allocation.

540,000 Louisianans have now received atleast one dose of their two dose vaccine series.

The winter weather is driving up the price of a gallon of regular in Louisiana, now up to 2.28 on average. Triple-A Fuel Analyst Don Redman says we’re up three cents over yesterday and 15 cents on the month, the kinds of spikes you ususally only see around hurricanes.

The seventh-ranked LSU baseball team will open the 2021 season tomorrow as they host Air Force. LSU has a lot of experienced pitchers, but the infield is inexperienced.  Freshman Will Hellmers could get the start at third base.  Hellmers was recruited as a pitcher out of Jesuit High School in New Orleans, but Mainieri says he’s got a good glove and also brings an edge to the field.

Southeastern Louisiana will host the 2021 Southland Conference baseball tournament at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field from May 26th to the 29th.  The neighborhood ballpark has led the conference in per-game attendance each of the last six seasons.  It will be the second time Southeastern serves as the site of the conference tournament, previously hosting in 2004.

Shreveport could be without water for some time as the winter storm appears to have caused significant damage to the city’s infrastructure. The national guard has had to deploy a number of large water tankers to city hospitals and Willis-Knighton Chief Administrative Officer Brian Crawford says that’s helping them meet basic needs…

State Police are investing a fatal police shooting in Mount Hermon. The shooting left 28-year-old Dustin Crain dead and occurred just after 10PM last night. Police allege they were responding to a domestic violence incident and when they arrived Crain had armed himself with two large knives and during a confrontation was shot and pronounced dead on the scene.
