A special state grand jury has indicted former state health secretary Bruce Greenstein on nine counts of perjury. The indictment accuses Greenstein of lying about his involvement in the award of a now-cancelled state government contract of nearly $200 million. The perjury allegations are tied to sworn testimony before a state Senate confirmation hearing and at a grand jury investigation of that contract. Greenstein’s lawyer says his client did not lie and will plead not guilty.

The state’s highest Democratic elected official has declined to endorse former Governor Edwin Edwards in his bid for the 6th Congressional District seat. Senator Mary Landrieu said she thinks the 86-year-old has been very energetic and would get a good vote. Landrieu was asked if her comments meant she supported Edwards and she didn’t say yes or no…

A new state funded feasibility study found that tolls could pay for up to 50 percent of the $3 billion dollars it would take to complete I-49 South from Lafayette to New Orleans. Franklin Senator Bret Allain says one of biggest parts of the project is construction of an elevated I-49 Connector through Lafayette which is estimated to cost more than $700 million dollars. He says there are many reasons we need an interstate from Acadiana to The Big Easy…

The report looked at 26 factors and the Bayou State ranked near or at the bottom in terms of obesity, volunteerism, divorce rate, and participation in sports. The report says Utah is the happiest state in America and West Virginia the least happy.

The Louisiana Department of Revenue is gearing up to offer Louisiana tax payers another amnesty period. Revenue Secretary Tim Barfield says the amnesty period runs from October 15 to November 14. He says, if you owe back taxes, you may want to take part in this or next year’s amnesty period…

If you’re behind on state taxes there’s another amnesty period coming up. Louisiana Department of Revenue Secretary Tim Barfield says unlike last year, this time tax payers can opt into an installment plan and pay over seven payments. He says amnesty begins October 15th and runs through November 14th…:

He says they collected about $425 million delinquent taxes last year and hope to get about $104 million in 2014.

US Senator Mary Landrieu and 2nd Congressional District Rep. Cedric Richmond got together yesterday to endorse each other in their respective races, but the state’s highest Democratic elected official declined to officially endorse Former Governor Edwin Edwards in his Congressional run. Landrieu says Edwards is running his campaign and she’s running hers.

Police in Vinton say they are investigating the fatal stabbing of a man allegedly at the hands of his neighbor. They say Daniel Kight is booked with second degree murder in the death of 56-year-old David Scasino of Vinton. Apparently the two had a past history of having disputes where cops had to get involved. Kight’s being held on $500,000 bond.

A new Veterans Cemetery will be built in Rayville after a $7.3 million dollar grant was approved to fund the site. Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary David Lacerte says the property is located near I-20 off Highway 425 and spans about 50 acres. He says they hope to have the cemetery complete Spring 2016…:

New Orleans Police are investigating the discovery of the deaths of a young child and a woman whose bodies were along Interstate 10. They say the bodies were at I-10 W along the Old Gentilly on ramp. The cause of death is undetermined at this time. Crews cutting the grass called police after making the discovery. Initial reports indicate the the woman and child had been there for several days.

In the latest prep football polls from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association, Rummel sits on top of the 5A poll, in Class 4A Warren Easton gets the top spot. John Curtis leads in the Class 3A polls. Many is No. 1 in 2A and Haynesville is at the top of Class 1A.

According to Collegiate Baseball’s annual evaluation of NCAA Division I baseball classes, LSU has the number one recruiting class in the nation. This is the 4th national recruiting title in the 32 year history of the rankings and the third in the past eight seasons. The freshman class includes six pitchers and five position players.
