LSU baseball coach Jay Johnson has began filling out his coaching staff as he has hired Arizona State’s Jason Kelly as the Tigers’ new pitching coach.  Kelly was recently fired by Arizona State after they learned he interviewed with LSU.  Kelly was named D1 Baseball’s Assistant of the year back in 2018.  He’s been the Sun Devils pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for the last three seasons.  Prior to his time in Tempe, Kelly was the Associate Head Coach, recruiting coordinator and pitching coach at the University of Washington.

Former LSU softball player Amanda Sanchez has become the first Olympian in program history after being named to the Mexican National Softball Team.
Sanchez will represent Mexico in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games. She is part of Mexico’s first Olympic softball team and the return of the sport to the Game’s for the first time since 2018.

Madison prep QB Zeon Chriss has committed to play football for the ULL Ragin Cajuns. He lead the chargers to a class 3-a championship title last season.

Former LSU Track and Field star Sha’Carri Richardson will not compete for team USA in the Tokyo Olympics this summer.  Richardson was suspended one month after testing positive for marijuana during a drug screening.  She would still be eligible to run on the team’s 4×100 meter relay but was left off the roster.

Game 1 of the NBA finals is in the books and the Phoenix Suns took down the Milwaukee Bucks 118-105.  Former New Orleans Hornet Chris Paul led the way offensively for the Suns, scoring 32 points to go along with nine assists.  Paul is looking for his first title in his 17 year career.  Former Pels guard Jrue Holiday struggled offensively for the Bucks, scoring just 10 points, but he did have seven rebounds and nine assists.  The Suns are now just three wins away from their first championship in franchise history.  Game two will be tomorrow at 8 pm.

Trina says the decision was made after a drop in Edwin’s blood pressure had her bring her husband to the hospital out of an abundance of caution.

On Talk Louisiana, Trina Edwards told Jim Engster Edwin has been losing some strength in recent weeks and agreed to place himself in hospice care but is still in good spirits.

Edwards served the first of his four terms in office in 1972 with his final term ending in 1996. He then went to federal prison following a corruption conviction in 2000 and was released in 2011.

Reichardt says Sander’s vehicle struck a southbound 2001 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 34-year-old Paden Posey, of Oak Grove. He says Posey was not injured in the crash.

Reichardt says all six in the Versa were not wearing seatbelts. While he cannot says the three victims would have survived the crash if they had been restrained…

In the northeast section of the state, Reichardt says they’ve now had a total of four traffic fatalities over the holiday weekend. He says while they want you to enjoy the holiday, please do so responsibly.

Infrastructure advocates are celebrating the Governor’s signing of legislation that will gradually shift 300 million dollars a year out of the general fund and into a dedicated fund for building roads and bridges. CRISIS Executive Director Scott Kirkpatrick says mega projects like bridges over the Calcasieu and Mississippi Rivers are noted in the legislation, but they haven’t determined yet how projects will be prioritized.

A zoo inside of the Mall of Baton Rouge is closed after a python reportedly got loose. The mall as a whole remains open but the Blue Zoo has been blocked off while zoo staff and local authorities attempt to find, corner, and catch the non-venomous snake.

San Francisco Giants pitcher and former LSU Tiger Kevin Gausman has been named to the 2021 National League All-Star team, making him the 13th former LSU player to be named an MLB all-star.  The selection of Gausman marks the sixth straight time that an LSU player has been chosen for the honor.  Gausman is 8-2 this season with a 1.68 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 101 innings.  Gausman is in his ninth season in the big league’s and second with the Giants.

The ULM football coaching staff will once again be allowed on Oak Grove High School’s campus once an evaluation period begins.  They were barred from campus  by coach Ryan Gregory after offensive lineman John Bolding’s scholarship was not renewed with the arrival of new Warhawks coach Terry Bowden.  Bolding, an Oak Grove product, was a Dean’s list student at ULM and set to graduate in December.

The women’s college world series averaged 59 percent more viewers than the men’s college world series.  The most viewed softball game grabbed the attention of 2.1 million viewers, 24 percent more viewers than the 1.7 million that tuned into the most watched men’s game.

Game one of the NBA is tonight at 8 pm as the Phoenix Suns and Milwaukee Bucks will face off in a best of seven series.  Former New Orleans Hornet Chris Paul and former head coach Monty Williams have led the Suns to the finals as they reunited after their time together in the Big Easy.  Former Pelicans guard Jrue Holiday will step on the court for the Bucks.  Holiday is averaging 17.7 points per game this season.

Former College Football head coach Mark Richt announced that he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s.  Richt coached the Georgia Bulldogs from 2001-2015 before a brief stint with the Miami Hurricanes from 2016-2018.  Richt has a head coaching record of 171 wins and 64 losses, and is 10-7 in bowl games and a pair of SEC Championships.

LSU baseball has officially landed All-American freshman transfer Jacob Berry from Arizona after the former Wildcats third baseman announced that he will be following coach Jay Johnson to LSU.  Berry hit .352 with a team-high 17 home runs and 70 RBI’s for the Wildcats last season.  He started 62 games for Arizona and hit 19 doubles, five triples, and totaled 87 hits.

The LSU football team has landed a commitment from the number two kicker in America for the class of 2022 as Nathan Dibert recently announced his pledge to the tigers.  Dibert performed well at the Kohl’s kicking camp as the left-footer connected on 24-25 fields goals with some in the 50-yard range.  With Dibert now on board that gives the Tigers 12 verbal commitments for the 2022 class.

LSU track star and Olympic sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson has received a lot of support from many athletes following her disqualification in the 100 meter at the Olympic games due to her positive marijuana test.

According to ESPN’s Mike Triplett, the New Orleans Saints are among a handful of teams interested in veteran free agent cornerback Richard Sherman ahead of the 2021 training camp.  New Orleans now has nearly 10 million in salary cap after extending Ryan Ramczyk. Sherman is a five-time pro bowler and has previously stated he wants to play for a contender.

Also, the Netflix film “Home Team” centering around Sean Payton’s 2012 suspension due to the bounty gate scandal has officially wrapped up filming in New Orleans.  Kevin James is playing the Saints’ head man and rounding out the cast will be Taylor Lautner, Rob Schneider, and others.

While former New Orleans stars Chris Paul and Jrue Holiday will battle it out for an NBA championship there is another matchup to watch for Pelicans fans.  Willie Green and Charles Lee, assistants for the Sun and Bucks are believed to be the leading candidates to fill the Pels’ head coaching vacancy.

LSU Alexandria is launching a new aviation program where students can become commercial pilots without any military experience.  Associate Vice Chancellor and Provost of Academic Affairs Dr. Eamon Halpin says this program was started due to the high demand for commercial pilots.

Halpin says this program will lead to a bachelor’s degree as well as a number of flight certifications for students.

In terms of who can enroll in the courses, Halpin says any student at the University can enroll regardless of age.

Veto override session ballots have been sent out to lawmakers and if a majority of lawmakers in both chambers elect not to return them an override session will begin July 20th.

Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat says the process for a veto session is in the constitution in that a session is automatically scheduled if even one veto is issued.

Some Republican lawmakers recommended those in favor of a veto override session shred their ballots so they are not mistakenly sent in.

Pinsonat says it appears highly likely that the outcry over the Governor’s controversial veto of legislation involving transgender athletes will result in most lawmakers not sending in a ballot.

Those ballots are due July 15th and Pinsonat says it will be public record which lawmakers sent in ballots asking for the veto session to be canceled.

Should the session be held lawmakers would have four days to address the 28 different vetoes issued by Governor Edwards this year.

Governor Edwards signs legislation that will begin the process of shifting Louisiana from an electronic voting system to a paper-based system.

Slidell Senator Sharon Hewitt says her bill will further strengthen the integrity of our elections.

Under a paper system, voters will receive a paper ballot that they can look at to make sure their vote was tabulated correctly, and that can be later audited by hand should the need arise.

The state is currently in search of new voting machines but Hewitt says this bill directs the Secretary of State to wait until we know exactly what we’re looking for to move ahead…

This commission will first meet on September 1st and generate a report before the start of 2022. Hewitt says it is unknown right now if the paper system will be available for the 2022 federal elections.

Hewitt says states all around the country that don’t already have a paper trail for their elections are quickly moving in that direction away from strictly electronic records…

Tom Galligan’s tenure as interim President of LSU has come to an end with the appointment of Bill Tate IV as the school’s new permanent President. Galligan had a rocky ride between COVID, the Summer of Black Lives Matter, and a Title IX scandal. Galligan says he’s ready for some time off…

Galligan took over just before the pandemic got started and says navigating that difficult period was a serious challenge.

Lawmakers appear likely to enter a historic, first-of-its-kind veto override session later this month. Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat says 28 bills were vetoed by the Governor this year but it’s the rejection of legislation banning transgender women from womens’ sports that played the biggest role in dragging lawmakers back to Baton Rouge…

The Fairness in Women’s Sports Act by Franklinton Senator Beth Mizell received over two-thirds support in both chambers of the Legislature, which if it holds would override a veto.

The World Health Organization recommends vaccinated people return to masking as the Delta variant spreads. State Health Office Dr. Joe Kanter says the CDC hasn’t backed that call in the US because our vaccination rate is so high…

State Transportation Secretary Shawn Wilson says a bipartisan infrastructure agreement touted by a group of Senators including Bill Cassidy would be the key to addressing the state’s billions of dollars of backlogged infrastructure needs. Wilson says this infrastructure package is a generational piece of legislation and the greatest investment since the New Deal.

The Senate and House appear set for a showdown over dueling infrastructure proposals as Friday the House passed a 715 billion dollar infrastructure proposal that includes more climate-related spending than the bipartisan agreement made in the Senate.

It’s been more than 10 months since Hurricane Laura ravaged southwest Louisiana and looks like finally, the feds are sending some real assistance to the region.  Governor Edwards says the state has demonstrated $3-billion in unmet needs from Laura, Delta, and Zeta and was able to get an agreement with HUD on that number…
