Commissioner of Administration Kristy Nichols said in a statement that there is a hiring freeze in place and if additional reductions need to be made at the mid-year point then it will happen to make sure a balanced budget is in place.

Tenth ranked Southeastern Louisiana is getting ready to host 13th ranked McNeese State this Saturday at Strawberry Stadium. The Lions are tied for first place in the Southland, one game ahead of the Cowboys. Southeastern is 7-and-3 overall on the season, but Coach Ron Roberts says they’ve yet to put it all together…

Both teams come into the game with injuries at the quarterback position. McNeese Daniel Sams has a thumb injury and is questionable for Saturday, while S-L-U’s Bryan Bennett has a foot injury. Kickoff is scheduled for 3PM Saturday afternoon.

Although he was seen walking gingerly around the locker room with a left knee injury, Saints cornerback Kennan Lewis hopes to play this Sunday against the Bengals. In case Lewis can’t go, New Orleans has reportedly signed safety Jamarca Sanford, who was released by the Redskins two weeks ago. Sanford also spent five seasons playing for Minnesota, starting 44 games.

LSU threw for only 76 yards in the loss to Alabama and the Tigers rank next to last in the Southeastern Conference in passing yards per game. So should there be a change at quarterback? Tiger Rag Editor Robert Stewart says it wouldn’t hurt to give true freshman Brandon Harris more snaps behind center…

Harris started the Auburn game, but did not play well and hasn’t seen much of the field since. The Tigers are at Arkansas this Saturday, where game time temperatures could be below freezing.

The high school football playoffs kick-off this weekend. In Class Four-A, Neville is ranked number one by the sports writers, but they have the number two seed in the 4-A bracket. Plaquemine is the top seed and the Green Devils will begin their run through the playoffs by hosting McDonough 35. Neville takes on Riverdale in the opening round. If Neville advances, they’ll face either Breaux Bridge or West Ouachita in the second round.

The Pelicans hope to jump above .500 tonight as they host the 1-and-6 Los Angeles Lakers in the Smoothie King Center.

The CDC says New Orleans was ranked fourth in the nation. Johnson says local HIV/AIDS organizations are working hard to continue to educate people about the disease and encouraging them to get tested. He says nobody can hide from HIV…:

According to a report from the Entertainment Software Association, Louisiana gaming is big business with big salaries. The report shows the state’s computer and video game industry paid workers $14 million dollars in 2012, with an average salary of $88 thousand dollars annually per person.

Five people dead, including three-children as a result of an overnight house fire in New Orleans. The three children ranged from ages seven to 12. The children’s father escaped uninjured, but he also lost his girlfriend and mother in the blaze. New Orleans Fire Chief Timothy McConnell says they did not have smoke detectors

Despite having millions for their Senate runoff campaigns, both Senator Mary Landrieu and Republican Congressman Bill Cassidy are doing their own versions of dialing for dollars. Landrieu has already been active on the phone, and in a release out today, Bill Cassidy asks “Will you stand with me?,” and then asks for anywhere from between $25 and $250. Political Analyst Bernie Pinsonat says total spending for the runoff could top $80 million dollars.

A Terrebonne Parish fiery crash involving two trucks lead to 3 deaths on Highway 24 yesterday. Trooper Evan Harrell says one driver driving at a high rate of speed, lost control of his vehicle in an S curve and slammed into another truck. Harrell says, due to the nature of the impact, the two vehicles almost instantaneously caught fire…

There were some profanity reports coming out of Tiger Stadium Satuday night for the Alabama game against head coach Nick Saban, which has prompted Athletic Director Joe Alleva to send a letter of apology to the University of Alabama. Coach Les Miles was unaware of the chants at the time, but once he found out, expressed his feelings…

There has been an extremely tragic accident in New Orleans where three children and two adults died in an overnight house fire. The children were ages 6, 11 and 12. New Orleans Fire Chief Timothy McConnell says they have learned there were no working smoke alarms inside the home:

Louisiana State Police say a fiery crash in Schriever yesterday afternoon has left three dead in Terrebonne Parish. An investigation revealed a Dodge driven by 19-year-old Jordan Mayon of Houma was speeding when he failed to make a curve and traveled into the opposite lane of traffic on La 24. LSP says the Dodge was hit by another vehicle with two occupants. All three were unable to escape the flames and were pronounced dead on the scene.

As things turn cold, fire officials are urging residents to please make sure you have a working smoke detector in your home. There was a tragedy last night in New Orleans in which three children and two adults died in a blaze inside their two story home. Authorities say there were no working smoke alarms inside the home. The three children who died were age 6, 11 and 12.

He says the vehicles then burst into flames. He says Mayon and the two occupants in the other vehicle, 30-year-old Kendric Prince of Patterson and 54-year-old Shannon Tassin, all died in the blaze.

Governor Bobby Jindal has issued a statement on Veterans Day. He says every day we enjoy liberty and the ability to pursue the American Dream because of those who fought tirelessly before us to protect and preserve the values that our Founding Fathers fought for, and that we are eternally grateful.

There’s been a tragic accident in Rapides Parish in which an Alexandria man was shot and killed by a man he was hunting with. Sheriff’s office spokesman Lt. Tommy Carnline says the friend mistaked his friend for a deer. He says this is just another incident that should remind hunters to wear clothing that clearly makes them visible to other hunters…:
