The Centers for Disease Control reports a widespread outbreak of the flu in Louisiana. Medical experts say seeing this many cases so early on is very uncommon as the peak of flu season usually hits the state around Mardi Gras. State health officials are urging people to get their flu shots as this year’s vaccine protects against the strain of flu that is being seen in the state. Louisiana is the only state in the Continental US with widespread cases.

Louisiana has joined 16 other states in filing a federal lawsuit which questions President Obama’s recent executive order dealing with immigration. The lawsuit claims the President’s action violated the “Take Care Clause” of the Constitution which limits the scope of presidential power. In a statement, Governor Bobby Jindal says Congress should work together to secure the border and what the president did is wrong.

A Shreveport man was arrested this afternoon in connection with the fatal shooting of a teen-ager. Shreveport Police say twenty-one year-old Solomon Tucker was booked on second-degree murder charges for allegedly shooting seventeen year-old Jonantea Carter on November 30th. Tucker’s bond was set at 250 thousand dollars.

First, it was an ethics violation filed in September against Democratic Senator Mary Landrieu for her use of taxpayer dollars to pay for airfare in her campaigning. Louisiana is joining a 16 state coalition-led by Texas Governor-elect Greg Abbott, in suing the Obama adminstration for the recent executive orders regarding illegal immigrant amnesty. He says Cooper and his passenger, 90-year-old Jewel Lee also of Newellton, were pronounced dead at the scene.

State Police also say there was a fatal crash in Ascension Parish on Tuesday in which a man from Donaldsonville ignored a flag man in a construction zone and crashed into a parked dump truck. They say 42-year-old Kirt Canova was in a 2010 Nissan Altima and was not restrained at the time of the crash and suffered fatal injuries as a result. Impairment is unknown at this time.

Both of these crashes remain under investigation.

Former Governor Edwin Edwards and Republican Garret Graves went head to head in Livingston Parish yesterday and it got ugly. Perhaps the most controversial moment came at the end of the 6th Congressional District debate when Graves announced he’d been endorsed but the Sheriff’s Association. Edwards left his podium and approached Graves calling him a liar. The Sheriff’s Association reportedly held a vote on whether or not to endorse Graves and all agreed but not every member was present at the meeting.

The big controversy of the night came when Graves announced he’s been endorsed by The Sheriff’s Association which Edwards called a lie. A spokesperson for the group did say they held a meeting and voted to endorse Graves, but not all members from the 6th District were present.

Louisiana State Police say two elderly people died yesterday afternoon in a crash involving a 2 dump trucks in Tensas Parish. They say 95-year-old Ralph Cooper of Newellton was on Highway 4 when he veered across into the opposite lane of traffic and was hit by two dump trucks that were following each other. Cooper and his passenger, 90-year-old Jewel Lee of Newellton were both pronounced dead at the scene.
