Moderna has joined Pfizer in pushing for the FDA and CDC to back giving fully vaccinated individuals a third booster shot, in an effort to fight the Delta variant.

Moderna’s President says they have data indicating people should take a half does shot six to eight months after completing their full vaccine series.

But Tulane School of Public Health Epidemiologist Dr. Susan Hassig says there’s not enough evidence to back the request yet and the vaccines appear to be working as expected.

The state continues to set new all-time highs for COVID-related hospitalizations. 2,350 COVID patients now occupy Louisiana medical beds, up from roughly 250 at the start of July.

LSU will not enter the fall semester with a vaccine mandate for in-person attendance, instead opting to test unvaccinated students monthly. This has drawn the chagrin of the LSU Senate Faculty but LSU Board Chairman Robert Dampf says a mandate is not legal under state laws because COVID vaccines are still under emergency use authorization.

Many LSU faculty members have fiercely criticized the policy, saying monthly testing is nearly equivalent to no testing at all given Delta’s incubation period.

But there are other key position battles as the Tigers report for preseason camp today.  The safety spot is a position with plenty of talent but not much experience.  Weathers says you could see some young guys step up in the secondary.

LSU Quarterback Myles Brennan was squarely in the mix to compete for LSU’s starting quarterback job this season until he broke his non-throwing arm. Brennan underwent surgery on Tuesday and his dad Owen Brennan tells WWL Radio the plan is to start rehab as soon as possible.

The New Orleans Saints have waived recently acquired defensive end Kendall Donnerson in order to make room for linebacker Kwon Alexander. Donnerson struggled to stand out at camp in a crowded position room that features players like Marcus Davenport and first-round pick Payton Turner.

The Pelicans have hired former two-time coach of the year Mike D’Antoni as a consultant to help out first-year coach Willie Green. D’Antoni is known for his offensive mind and has been a head coach for multiple NBA franchises.

Former Nicholls head baseball coach Seth Thibodeaux has been named as the pitching coach at U-L Lafayette.

 

Also, The Hall of Fame game is tonight as the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers will battle it out in Canton, Ohio at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.  Quarterback Dak Prescott will not suit up for the Cowboys as he nurses a shoulder injury.

The tropics have been quiet lately, but NOAA’s climate prediction center still predicts an above-average hurricane season with 15 to 21 named storms. In May NOAA predicted 13 to 20 named storms. But lead seasonal hurricane forecaster Matthew Rosencrans says that’s not the 30 named storms recorded during the historic 2020 season…

An early morning crash in St. Tammany Parish claims the lives of two teens and leaves two others hospitalized. Saint Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Captain Lance Vitter says the four young girls were occupants of a 2019 Honda Civic that left the roadway, struck two trees, a telephone pole, and other stationary objects. Vitter says it’s unknown if one of the fatalities included the driver of the vehicle.

LSU announced that unvaccinated students will be required to test monthly for COVID during the fall semester. System President William Tate says when students arrive on campus for the semester, they will be required to submit proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test. Tate says the policy is part of several other safety protocols

Grambling State University utilizes federal pandemic recovery funds to pay off 1.5 million dollars in student account balances accrued from spring 2020 through the summer of 2021. Associate VP of Finance Sheliah Faucette says they want to attract students back to the famed Historically Black University.

Max Johnson is set to be LSU’s starting quarterback after an injury to Myles Brennan’s non-throwing arm that required surgery.  With Brennan sidelined for the foreseeable future, that leaves LSU with just two scholarship quarterbacks. Max Johnson is certainly a capable starter but his backup will be true freshman Garrett Nussmeier.  The Athletic’s Brody Miller says while Nussmeier lacks experience, the coaching staff is confident he can perform if called upon.

With three Minnesota quarterbacks being placed on the team’s Covid list, the Vikings have now claimed LSU quarterback Danny Etling off of waivers.  Etling was drafted by the Patriots in 2018 and has spent time in New England, Atlanta, and Seattle.

New Orleans Saints rookie linebacker Pete Werner has shown some flashes so far in training camp and has caught the attention of the coaches and has even ran through drills with the first-team defense.  The Ohio State alum says his ultimate goal is to one day be a starter for the Black and Gold.

The Saints have brought back linebacker Kwon Alexander on a one-year deal that’s worth a reported three million dollars. The 27-year-old played in 12 games for the Black and Gold last year and had 57 tackles. His season ended on Christmas Day when he tore his Achilles tendon.

Tomorrow the statewide indoor mask mandate will go into effect for the first time since it was allowed to expire in late April. Governor Edwards says even though you have until tomorrow morning to start masking up he’d appreciate it if you did so this evening if you plan to go out.

The Louisiana Department of Revenue is about to turn over more than $10-million to Unclaimed Property. Department of Revenue Spokesperson Byron Henderson says it’s money that was issued by paper checks for tax refunds, from July of 2019 to June of 2020, and that’s money that has gone uncashed.
