The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s office has arrested an Opelousas woman for allegedly burning her child with cigarettes. 26-year-old Jessica Deville is facing a charge of cruelty to a juvenile. Lt. Clay Higgins says they were alerted by a local hospital emergency room about the alleged abuse…

Higgins says the hospital reported the 5-year-old had what appeared to be cigarette burns on his hands and torso. The child was brought to the emergency room by his father. Higgins says authorities spoke to both the father and child…

Deville denies the accusation, but Higgins says since the injuries occurred under her care, she is held responsible. The child is recovering and living with his father. St. Landry Child Protection Services is continuing to investigate. Higgins says a crime like this is just shocking…

The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office has arrested the man wanted in the shooting injury of a deputy. Sheriff Jeff Wiley says the deputy stopped the suspect vehicle while responding to a shoplifting complaint…

Wiley says a passenger in the vehicle, who is identified as 35-year-old John McMullen, came out shooting and shot the deputy in the hand. Wiley says the deputy was released from the hospital and will hopefully make a full recovery. Wiley says, after a five hour search, McMullen was found hiding near the Assumption Parish line…

A man and a woman, who were in the car with McMullen, were arrested earlier. Wiley says McMullen is wanted in Florida for numerous charges, including attempted first degree murder. He says McMullen and the others are facing major charges now in Louisiana… (Charges include attempted first-degree murder of a police officer.)

One of the top high school football prospects announced his decision to play at LSU today. Riverdale defensive back Donte Jackson chose the Tigers over Georgia and U-S-C. Football analyst Mike Detillier says Jackson is a great talent…

The five-foot-eleven cornerback from New Orleans had five interceptions in his senior and played well in the U-S Army All-American Bowl. Detillier could see Jackson playing in the NFL one day, because of his speed and ability to cover….

State Police is investigating a tragic accident out of St. Francisville which claimed the life of a 73-year-old man Tuesday afternoon. Trooper Jared Sandifer says Felix Lipoma of Gonzales was pulling out of a private drive onto LA 61 as an 18-wheeler was approaching…:

Sandifer says as Lipoma was pulling out onto the highway in his truck he hit the back of the tractor-trailer then overturned continuously…:

Sandifer says Lipoma was buckled up during the time of the crash and impairment is not suspected on the part of either driver. He says even though Lipoma was hurt, he was responsive with emergency personnel on the scene…:

A woman in Opelousas is in big trouble after authorities believe she burned her child with cigarettes. The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s office says 26-year-old Jessica Deville is charged with cruelty to a juvenile. Lt. Clay Higgins says authorities spoke with the father and the child:

State Police report a 73-year-old man was killed in a two-vehicle accident yesterday afternoon on US 61 in St. Francisville. They say Felix Lipoma of Gonzales was pulling out of a driveway when his truck collided with a passing 18-wheeler. Lipoma’s truck flipped several times. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Ascension Parish Deputies have arrested the man wanted in the shooting injury of a fellow deputy. Authorities say the deputy stopped a vehicle when responding to a shoplifting complaint when the suspect, 35-year-old John McMullen opened fire and shot the cop in the hand. McMullen faces many charges and he’s also wanted in Florida on charges including first degree murder.

The state is set to begin accepting proposals on alternative ways to get rid of the 15 million pounds of explosive material at Camp Minden. Louisiana Progress Action spokeswoman Frances Kelley says with all of the uncertainties surrounding an open burn of the material, officials should look at other solutions to the problem…:

The EPA recently delayed the open tray burn of the propellant for at least 90 days to allow time to figure out a safe way to dispose of the M6.

The Jefferson Davis Sheriff’s office has arrested an Elton High School teacher for allegedly molesting a student. Authorities say they were contacted by school officials after they received a report of an inappropriate relationship between Justin Fruge and a student. After an investigation, Fruge was arrested on two counts of molestation of a juvenile.

President Obama’s tax proposals, which he pitched in his State of the Union Address, are not being well-received by Republican lawmakers. Lafayette Congressman Charles Boustany calls the tax increases a re-distribution of wealth through increased spending. Boustany says he wants a tax code that is fair, simplified, and lowers rates to help grow the economy…

The President’s plan would raise the capital gains tax on top-earning Americans, eliminate the current tax break on inheritances, and raise taxes on big banks.

An Arnaudville man was arrested accused of stealing more than $36,000 from his elderly grandmother. The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Department says Martin Thibodeaux made 34 unauthorized withdrawals from the woman’s bank account. The woman’s safety deposit box, which had an unknown amount of money inside, was found empty as well. Thibodeaux is charged with financial exploitation of the elderly.

After the child’s father brought him to the ER, medical staff observed signs of torture on the 5-year-old while treating him for burns to his hands and torso. After an investigation, authorities arrested 26-year-old Jessica Deville of Opelousas on a charge of cruelty of a juvenile.

The President pitched the plan in his State of the Union Address last night. The President’s plan would raise the capital gains tax on top-earning Americans and eliminate the current tax break on inheritances. Lafayette Congressman Charles Boustany says an agreement was made to set the inheritance tax at 35-percent and the President’s plan is not a good faith attempt to work on tax reform…

The Saints have reportedly added former Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland to their front office. Based on reports, Ireland will handle college scouting. The Saints fired Director of College Scouting Rick Reiprish, yesterday. There’s also been an addition to the coaching staff, based on media reports. Dennis Allen will serve as an assistant on defense, working with defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. Allen was with the Saints from 2006 to 2010. He left to become the Broncos defensive coordinator and served as a head coach for the Raiders in 2011.

And one other Black and Gold note, running back Mark Ingram has been added to the Pro Bowl roster. Ingram takes the place of Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch.

LSU announces that all 56 regular season baseball games can viewed on either SEC Network-plus, which is on the internet, or on ESPN’s family of TV channels. That includes ESPN, ESPN 2, ESPN-U and the SEC Network. Seven games are also set to appear on C-S-T.

Jordan Mickey’s double-double helped propel LSU past Florida 79-61 in Gainesville. Mickey scored 14 points and pulled down 10 boards in the win. Jarell Martin lead all scorers with 22. The Tigers are now 14-4 and 3-2 league record has them sitting in a tie for third in the SEC. LSU heads to Nashville Saturday for a matchup with Vanderbilt.

It was a busy night in the Southland Conference. Another double-double performance, this one by John Jordan to lead Texas A&M-Corpus Christi over Northwestern State 88-76. Jordan had 22 points and 11 assists as the Islanders have now won five of their last six. Northwestern guard Zeke Woodley lead all scorers with 24. The Demons are 3-3 in conference play and will host McNeese St. Saturday.

Speaking of the Cowboys, they picked up their first Southland Conference win last night when they upended Abilene Christian 63-56. Desharick Guidry lead McNeese with 21 points and 16 rebounds. The Cowboys improve to 7-9 on the season.

And Sam Houston remains perfect in conference play after a 62-39 shellacking of Nicholls State.
