The voice of the LSU Tigers, Jim Hawthorne, has announced he will retire following 2015-16 basketball season. Hawthorne has been calling LSU sporting events for 35 years. The Anacoco native says it’s been a blessing, but he’s ready to move into a new phase of his life…

During his career, he’s been on the mic for LSU’s three Final four appearances, two national titles in football and all six of LSU’s national championships in baseball.

The Pelicans really took it on the chin last night as they were crushed by the Indiana Pacers 106-93. The game wasn’t even close as the Pacers lead by as much as 33 in the fourth quarter. Luke Babbit came off the bench to lead the Pels with 15 points. The Pelicans were without Anthony Davis and Ryan Anderson who missed their second straight game due to injury. Davis did announce that he would not be participating in the NBA All-Star Game Sunday.

U-L Lafayette defensive coordinator James Willis is leaving the Ragin Cajuns to become a defensive assistant and linebackers coach for the New Orleans Saints. Willis had been with U-L-L the last two seasons. The Saints also announced the hiring of former Raiders Coach Dennis Allen as a defensive assistant. He’ll work with defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. The Saints will have 23 coaches on their staff.

High School football powers John Curtis and Evangel Christian have opted to play up to Class Five-A in all sports. The decision means that Curtis will likely play in the Catholic League. Other notable changes….because of enrollment Carencro moves from Five-A to Four-A. Abbeville and Bossier are going up to Four-A, while Eunice and Peabody fall to Three-A and Notre Dame falls from Three-A to Two-A, and Homer and Oak Grove goes from Two-A to One-A. New districts for the upcoming sports year could be finalized by the end of the month.

In college basketball tonight, Louisiana Tech hosts Florida Atlantic in Conference USA action. The Bulldogs are 9-3 in league play and looking to stay in first place.

And in the Sun Belt, the league leading ULM Warhawks host UL-Lafayette.

Planned Parenthood has filed an appeal regarding a Department of Health and Hospitals decision denying the group permission to perform abortions at a new facility currently under construction in New Orleans. Senior Counsel, Roger Evans, says the basis of the appeal is that DHH offered no basis in denying the application…

But DHH Secretary Kathy Kliebert says the organization did not meet the Facility Need Requirements specified by the state and their application was denied…

The group says they currently see about 8,000 patients at their current health center in New Orleans. A decision from an administrative law judge is expected in 4 to 7 months.

Governor Bobby Jindal proposes reducing the size of tax credits in cases where a company or individual receives more money from the state than they owe as a way to balance next fiscal year’s budget. Jindal says two of his cabinet secretaries are looking at how this could help the state’s fiscal situation

The state faces a one-point-six billion dollar shortfall for next fiscal year. Jindal’s commissioner of administration, Kristy Nichols, will present a proposed spending plan to lawmakers on February 27th.

According to Fandango, Louisiana and Alabama are buying twice as many pre-sale tickets than normal for the film, while Mississippi tops the list at 4 times their usual rate. The ticket hub’s chief correspondent is Dave Karger…:

Tragedy strikes in Calcasieu Parish, as a three year-old accidentally shoots herself with one the family’s guns. Authorities say the father was cleaning his guns and suddenly had to depart for work, leaving the weapons out. The dad did call the mom to tell her to put them away, but by the time she got home, it was too late. Sheriff Tony Mancuso says, for now, no charges have been filed.

Serious charges are facing a Houma man, after 4 new born puppies were found dead in a home, including one with a severed head. Police Chief Todd Duplantis says the live-in boyfriend of the woman who owned the puppies got into an argument with her, and when she left the residence to calm down, she returned, made the discovery, and called police…

A businessman whose testimony helped put former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin in prison has been sentenced to a year and a day in prison after pleading guilty to fraud related to Nagin’s corruption case. Frank Fradella was sentenced today for making a $50,000 payoff to Nagin in exchange for favorable treatment of his business interests. Nagin is serving a 10-year prison sentence.

When the woman returned home, she found that one of the puppies heads had been severed. She says the puppies were alive and well when she left the residence. When authorities arrived they questioned Kiffe who denied any knowledge of the incident because he was sleeping and admitted he was drunk. Duplantis says the woman continued to search for the other puppies…

The other three puppies were found deceased in a plastic bag under the sofa. The owner reported that the puppies were born on January 27th. Kiffe was arrested, charged with four counts of aggravated cruelty to animals. Duplantis says, if convicted, Kiffe is facing some serious jail time… (Kiffe faces up to 40 years in prison, if convicted on all charges.)

A Houma man is under arrest after four new born puppies were found dead in a home, one with a severed head. Police Chief Todd Duplantis says 52-year-old Richie Kiffe (KEEF) denied knowledge of why his girlfriend found the deceased animal but did admit he was passed out drunk. Duplantis says the woman continued to search for the other puppies…:

Kiffe (KEEF) was arrested and charged with four counts of aggravated cruelty to animals.

As we approach the February 15th deadline, the US Department of Health and Human Services announces since open enrollment began on November 15th, 157,900 people in Louisiana have selected plans or were re-enrolled through HealthCare.gov. With only four days left, officials are urging uninsured citizens to get signed up for coverage if you haven’t already.

Amazing atmosphere, amazing game, but the end result wasn’t great for the LSU Tigers basketball team who lost to number one ranked Kentucky 71-69 last night. LSU’s Keith Hornsby had a chance to win at the buzzer with a three-pointer, but his shot bounced off the rim. LSU’s Jarrell Martin led all scorers with 21 points as the Tigers fall to six and five in the SEC.

There’s been a tragedy in Lake Charles. Cops say a three year old child go a hold of a family weapon and shot and killed herself by mistake. Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso says the guns were left out in a hurry, and three children encountered them when the tragedy took place. He says this is a valuable lesson for parents in that we have to be aware of our children at all times…:

The woman called the cops who found the suspect drunk on the couch. There were also three other dead puppies found. Kiffe was arrested, charged with four counts of aggravated cruelty to animals.

The Powerball prize for tonight’s drawing is now $500 million dollars. The Louisiana Lottery announced the jackpot grew once again just this morning. The deadline to purchase a ticket is 9pm.
