A civil district judge in New Orleans declares that New Orleans Saints and Pelicans owner Tom Benson is legally competent to run the teams. His estranged heirs tried to prove the 87 year-old Benson was mentally unsound when he made the decision to transfer ownership to his wife Gayle, upon his death. Legal analysts say today is a victory for Benson, but his legal battles are not over.

The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office says a man is dead after falling off of a barge at a recycling center in Gibson. They say 44-year-old James Patrick Lafleur of Morgan City was a welder on the platform barge when he fell nearly 60 feet to the barge’s base. Lafleur was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Bill continue to dump significant amounts of rain in Texas, Oklahoma, and northwest Louisiana and officials have been told that another flood event is predicted for the Red River. On Wednesday the 1st Circuit Court of Appeal agrees that Governor Bobby Jindal can’t do away with testing contracts tied to the controversial Common Core Education Standards. The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s office reports a 26-year-old A.A.U. basketball coach is under arrest for allegedly sending explicit pictures and text messages to a female juvenile. The victim’s family contacted deputies and after an investigation they booked Adrian Steib Jr. on charges of computer aided solicitation of a minor and indecent behavior with a juvenile.

There’s a bill on Governor Bobby Jindal’s desk which would put into law a provision allowing cops equipment on patrol cars to scan someone’s license plate as a way to catch uninsured motorists.

Amite Police say a Roseland man is under arrest accused of killing his neighbor Wednesday. They say 39-year-old Jermaine Williams and 27-year-old Joshua Lee were having an argument when Williams pulled a gun and shot Lee five times. Williams also allegedly shot at Lee’s girlfriend. Williams is charged with second degree murder and attempted second degree murder. Authorities believe an ongoing feud between the men led to the incident.
