Police in Thibodaux have made an arrest of a parolee, found in possession of crack cocaine, ecstacy and other illegal drugs during a traffic stop. Twenty-six year-old Alfonzo Johnson of Thibodaux tried to convince the officer the crack cocaine was actually deodorant. The K-9’s were called to dispel that, and Johnson was booked into the LaFourche Parish Detention Center, then released after posting a nine thousand dollar bond.

Some parents in Tangipahoa Parish are asking for a delay the start of school, because of the extreme heat. A former Iberia Parish Sheriff’s deputy faces a day in jail for punching a man who was under arrest in September 2013 after the Sugar Can Festival in New Iberia. US Attorney Stephanie Fialey says 29-year-old Cody Laperouse must also perform 200 hours of community service, take anger management and pay a $2,000 fine. Laperouse pleaded guilty in March to a count of depriving a man of his civil rights.

According to figures released today by the US Labor Department, unemployment fell in June in Louisiana to 6.4 percent down from 6.6 percent where it’s been the past three months. The Louisiana Workforce Commission also says we’re close to an all-time high in payrolls with employers reporting 13,000 more jobs than in June of last year.

The Baton Rouge Fire Department arrests a woman accused of setting her ex-boyfriend’s belongings on fire in front of his new woman’s apartment door. Witnesses at the complex reported seeing Courtney Pittman start the blaze of a garbage bag filled with men’s clothing and personal items using hairspray and a lighter. She is charged with simple arson.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is once again working to reestablish a species and this time it’s the juvenile Alligator Snapping Turtle. They’ve recently released some back into the wild in the Calcasieu River Basin. LDWF Natural Heritage Program Manager, Amity Bass, says they’ve already freed 8 and have 50 scheduled for release this fall…:

LDWF’s head start program raises these turtles in captivity until they are 3-years-old before they are released, giving the animals a better chance of survival.

Gas prices are down in Louisiana four cents from this time last week. The current statewide average for a gallon of regular is $2.49.

Tangipahoa Parish Superintendent Mark Kolwe says they will hear concerns of parents at a school board meeting tonight, but it’s a little too late to start changing the calendar and schedules of other parents and teachers.

Most of the state is currently under a heat advisory until 7pm this evening according to the National Weather Service. Forecasters say heat index values during the afternoon hours will range between 105-110 degrees and limited cloud cover and light winds during the day will further add to heat stress conditions. They urge residents to drink plenty of fluids and stay indoors and out of the sun of possible.

The Change.org petition states that buses don’t have air conditioners and the kids are riding home during peak hours of heat. They propose kicking off time in the classroom after the Labor Day Holiday. The school board meets in Amite tonight at 6.

State Police say a woman is dead and another in the hospital after they were hit by a car Monday afternoon on I-12 in Livingston Parish. They say 57-year-old Maggie Lynn of Independence and 56-year-old James Kinchen of Tickfaw were on the shoulder of the interstate trying to load a car into a trailer when they were hit by 26-year-old Mekdad Zidan of Baton Rouge. Lynn was pronounced dead on arrival. Zidan was booked with negligent homicide and reckless operation because investigators believe he was speeding.

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu travels to the Vatican with other mayors, governors, and UN Representatives to meet with Pope Francis to discuss global issues. Political Analyst Clancy Dubos says this is part of the Pope’s effort to engage and motivate political and community leaders around the world. Shreveport Police are searching for a man and woman they believe were involved in a late night shooting. They say the incident began during an argument between two men and a woman. At some point, the two men began shooting at each other. One man was shot in the groin area. He was transported to a local hospital with what is described as serious injuries. Authorities say a weapon has been recovered, but they are still on the lookout for the shooter.

A new Monmouth University poll shows likely Iowa caucus goers giving Governor Bobby Jindal a 59 percent favorable rating, 5th highest among Republican presidential hopefuls. Radio Iowa News Director Kay Henderson says while Iowans like Jindal’s religious liberty message, it’s very difficult to receive a large amount of support when several candidates are going after that evangelical christian vote…
