Training camp begins today for the Saints who are required to report to the team’s facility in West Virginia. The team is ready to put behind last season’s disappointing 7-and-9 campaign. NFL analyst Mike Detillier says the Saints spent the offseason trying to improve their offensive and defensive lines and that’s where you’ll find your big training camp battles…

Detillier says it will be interesting to see if the Saints top draft pick, offensive tackle Andrus Peat, can perform well enough to earn a starting spot.

The Saints have released veteran defensive tackle Broderick Buckley after he failed a physical. Safety Jairus Byrd, wide receiver Marques Colston, and defensive lineman Glenn Foster have each been declared physically unable to perform. As soon as those players are healthy, they will be able to return to the field.

LSU men’s basketball coach Johnny Jones announces he’s hired Brendan Suhr as an assistant coach. Suhr won a pair of NBA titles as an assistant for Chuck Daly, who guided the Detroit Pistons to world championships in 1989 and 1990. Suhr has also spent time as an assistant for the Toronto Raptors, Orlando Magic and New York Knicks. He’s most recently been an assistant at Central Florida and the New Jersey native has been busy with his speaking and consulting firm known as Off the Court.

The Ragin Cajuns have announced that baseball coach Tony Robichaux has signed a new five-year contract keeping him in the UL Lafayette dugout through the 2020 season. The deal will pay Robichaux a base salary of 155-thousand dollars a year. He can also receive bonuses for winning Sun Belt championships and appearing in the NCAA Tournament.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has upheld New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s four-game suspension for his role in the “Deflategate” scandal. Brady and the Patriots are accused to using underinflated footballs during January’s AFC Championship game.

The Department of Health and Hospitals says the presence of a deadly brain eating amoeba has been found in an Ascension Parish water system. This is the same amoeba found in St. Bernard Parish last week. State Health Officer Dr. Jimmy Guidry says it’s not a surprise that they’ve detected the presence of this amoeba in two water systems within two weeks…

The most recent campaign finance figures shows Republican John Young leading Lt. Governor’s race the field with over $2.2 million in cash on hand. Fellow Republican Billy Nungesser is not far behind with more than $1.6 million. Democrat Kip Holden reports $68,000 cash on hand, while Republican Elbert Guillory owes his campaign nearly $4,000. The Humane Society of Louisiana issues a statewide heat advisory for pets after learning of a dog fatality in Franklin Parish. Director Jeff Dorson says during the hot summer months they start to receive a lot of calls from around the state regarding people not taking proper care of their pets,especially dogs and leaving them out in the heat.

Dorson says in the case in Franklin Parish, they got a call from neighbors about a gray pit bull tired up outside without any shade or water for several days. He says the dog wrapped itself around a poll and ultimately died of heat exhaustion and the owner, who was not present when officers arrived, will be charged with cruelty to animals.

Dorson says the key is to prevent heat stroke rather than treat it by making sure your pets are comfortable. He says dogs are social animals and want to be inside and a part of the family.

State Health officials have found another water system in Louisiana that contains a deadly brain eating amoeba. The Department of Health and Hospitals says the presence of the amoeba was found during surveillance testing of a water system that serves 18-hundred residents near Donaldsonville in Ascension Parish. State Health Officer Dr. Jimmy Guidry…

This is the same amoeba found in St. Bernard Parish last week. Guidry says the water is safe to drink. He says it’s not a surprise that they’ve detected the presence of this amoeba in two water systems within two weeks.

Guidry says the amoeba thrives at this type of year and the warm water dissipates the chlorine, making it hard to get rid of. He says they plan on keeping surveillance up and conducting a chlorine burn.

The Caddo Parish Sheriff’s office says a 34-year-old man who claimed to be a youth mentor is under arrest for having sex with a juvenile. Apparently Jeremy Tyrone Sims began having sex with the girl several years ago when she was 14 after convincing the family that he was her youth mentor. He’s booked with molestation of a juvenile.

Despite all of this fundraising activity, Pinsonat says you probably won’t see a lot of ads or activity from these campaigns until after Labor Day.

Governor Bobby Jindal’s Presidential campaign says he’s back on the road after taking a break from touring to help Lafayatte recover from the Grand Theater shooting last week. The 2016 hopeful is traveling to New York for a round of media interviews.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says two men are cited with stealing over 500 alligator eggs worth $10,460. Agents say 24-year-old Christopher Traham of Lake Charles and 47-year-old Paul Canick of Grand Chenier got a slip for illegal possession of alligator eggs and not following regulations. It was determined the men did not have valid permits to harvest eggs at affected nest sites.

Louisiana GOP Chairman Roger Villere asks conservatives to vote for former Congressman Jeff Landry for Attorney General. Landry said during the announcement this morning that a new honest, ethical and hardworking AG is needed to help usher in a new day for Louisiana. The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s office says an 81-year-old man is booked in a child rape that occurred in the mid-1980s. They say a woman called detectives and stated shed been victimized by Warren Danos of Larose over the course of 2 years about 30 years ago when she was less than 10 years old. Danos was booked with Aggravated Rape and posted $5000 bond.

Governor Bobby Jindal is back on the campaign trail. Jindal had suspended his touring for the Republican Presidential nomination in the wake of the Lafayette theater shooting. Today his office says he’s headed to New York for interviews.
