Although he still won’t name a starter for the season opener, LSU head football coach Les Miles admits that sophomore Brandon Harris has the lead in the team’s quarterback battle with junior Anthony Jennings. Harris has been taking a majority of the snaps with the first team since preseason practice began August 6th.

Three LSU Tigers have have been named to the first team preseason All-SEC coaches team….running back Leonard Fournette, offensive lineman Vadal Alexander, and defensive back Jalen Mills, who will likely miss the first couple of games of the season due to a lower leg injury. Linebacker Kendell Beckwith and cornerback Tre’Davious White are second-team selections, along with punter Jamie Keehn. Wide receiver Travin Dural is selected to the third team along with defensive tackle Davon Godchaux.

Louisiana Tech defensive end Vontarrius Dora has been added to the Rotary Lombardi Award watch list. Dora has 99 total career tackles, 14 tackles for a loss and seven and half sacks. Defensive tackle Vernon Butler is another Bulldog on the Lombardi Award watch list.

ULM head coach Todd Berry has named Garrett Smith as the Warhawks starting quarterback. The redshirt freshman split first team reps during fall practice with senior quarterback Brayle Brown. ULM takes on ninth ranked Georgia to start the season September 5th.

Yesterday at Saints training camp, cornerback Brandon Browner was spotted on the field for the first time since sustaining an injury in the preseason opener against Baltimore. Browner was wearing a brace on his right knee and did some light work with the trainers. Running back Khiry Robinson did not practice for a second straight day.

The LSU baseball team has released its 2016 schedule. The Tigers will open the year on February 19th against Cincinnati. A few other highlights, they’ll travel to Nicholls State on March 2nd, host Louisiana Tech March 8th, battle UL Lafayette in the Wally Pontiff Junior Classic at Zephyr Field on March 22nd, host Vanderbilt April 8th to the 10th and play two games at Notre Dame on May 10th and 11th.

Alford says it’s not unheard of to have a self-financed candidate in a major state election…

Gubernatorial candidate Scott Angelle loaned his campaign $122,000 as well as taking out a bank loan for an additional $253,000. All three declared candidates for Attorney General, including incumbent Buddy Caldwell, have turned to self-financing. He says Super PACs are involved in the state election for the first time and that’s another reason campaigns are finding money hard to come by…

A vigil for State Trooper Steven Vincent is being held thi evning at the Iowa High School football stadium at 7pm. Members of law enforcement agencies and other first responders are asked to wear their uniforms. All will be asked to sit in a place of honor on the football field. A number of speakers are scheduled, including Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso and several clergy members.

Funeral arrangements for State Police Trooper Steven Vincent — who was killed in the line of duty Sunday, are set. Visitation will be begin 3pm Friday at Johnson’s Funeral Home in Lake Charles, and the funeral will take place at noon Saturday at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Vincent’s accused shooter, 54-year-old Kevin Daigle, is also facing homicide charges in the murder of his roommate, 54 year old Blake Brewer of Moss Bluff.

Army officials announce about 1,000 infantrymen from Fort Polk’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team will deploy to Afghanistan next month. Base spokesperson Kimberly Reischling (rye-shling) says the unit will be serving as advisors to the Afghans on how to preserve their capabilities..:

The Baton Rouge Police Department arrests a man they say tried to run over two officers during a traffic stop. They say 30-year-old St. Julian Baranco of Kenner fled from uniformed officers who were trying to pull him over, struck two police cruisers and attempted to hit two cops with his vehicle during the pursuit. Officers fired shots which hit Baranco. The man was released from a hospital and charged with 2 counts of attempted first degree murder of a police officer. A passenger in the vehicle remains at large.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office has identified the man who alleged cop murderer Kevin Daigle could have also killed as 54-year-old Blake Brewer of Moss Bluff. They say Daigle, who is charged in the shooting death of Trooper Steven Vincent, is reported to have lived with Brewer and was driving Brewer’s truck at the time of the shooting. Sheriff Tony Mancuso says Brewer’s death is being investigated as a homicide…:

The National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Erika is moving through the Atlantic Ocean toward the Caribbean. They say some strengthening is forecast during the next couple of days and on the track the center of Erika will approach the Leeward Islands Wednesday night and early Thursday. After that, the hurricane center expects Erika to move close to Puerto Rico and Hispaniola before becoming a category one hurricane early on Saturday near the Bahamas.
