The Louisiana National Guard, which played a huge role during Hurricane Katrina, has dedicated an exhibit to the destructive storm at their Jackson Barracks museum in New Orleans. Captain Heather Englehart says one of the biggest parts of the exhibit is a Huey helicopter used to save thousands trapped on rooftops.

The latest on Tropical Storm Erika shows the storm remains unchanged for the most part with max winds of 45 miles per hour and movement toward the west. Erika will approach the Leeward Islands by late tonight and Puerto Rica during the day Thursday. Current projections show more strengtehning from the storm prior to landfall near the Miami area Monday. Forecasters are not counting it out yet whether or not the storm will get into the Gulf.

Republican David Vitter’s campaign announces they’ve started airing another ad today statewide called “The Right Team.” They say it highlights Vitter’s plan to get Louisiana out of a budget mess. The ad closes with the US Senator saying, “They say I’m annoying the politicians so I must be doing something right.”

State Police say a woman in Amite died in a wrong way crash on I-55 in Tangipahoa Parish. They say 911 got a call Wednesday afternoon in reference to a vehicle traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the interstate and minutes later were informed of a head on collision. The wrong-way vehicle driver, 22-year-old Summer Graves, was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle had minor injuries. Troopers suspect Graves was impaired.

The Louisiana National Guard museum at Jackson Barracks in New Orleans has opened a special exhibit to commemorate efforts to rescue thousands of stranded residents in the days after Hurricane Katrina. Many in the public are asking for ways they can help the family of Trooper Steven Vincent who was murdered in the line of duty last weekend. They say the report from ACT released today indicates the state’s gain of 0.2 points in the average student’s score topped all states testing 100 percent of students. State Police say one is dead and another injured after a two vehicle crash on I-55 in Tangipahoa Parish. Authorities believe 22-year-old Summer Allen Graves of Amite was traveling northbound in the southbound lane of the roadway when she collided head-on with a truck driven by 63-year-old Jackie Hartfield of Columbia, Mississippi. Graves, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene. Hartfield suffered minor injuries. Investigators suspect Graves was impaired at the time of the crash.

Planned Parenthood has filed a federal lawsuit against the state over Governor Bobby Jindal’s plans to cut their Medicaid funding. The organization says the loss of that money would limit health services for the poor. Jindal announced his plans after secretly taped videos surfaced apparently showing Planned Parenthood workers discussing the sale of aborted fetus body parts.

It appears that more and more political candidates in Louisiana are turning to self-financing their campaigns. LaPolitics-dot-com Publisher Jeremy Alford says seven statewide candidates reached into their own pockets and loaned money to their campaigns in the last fundraising quarter. He says Super PACs are one reason campaigns are finding money hard to come by…
