Today in Baton Rouge a jury convicted a Bossier City drifter of second degree murder in the 1984 killing of Crowley businessman Gary Kergan. 66-year-old Ronald Dunnagan, who was also a former French Quarter clown, now faces an automatic sentence of life in prison. Kergan, along with his brother, owned several Sonic restaurants in south Louisiana. His body was never found and he was declared legally dead in 1986. The jury deliberated today for less than a hour before returning with the guilty verdict.

A former state legislator, who served two years in federal prison after pleading guilty to money laundering charges in 2008, announces that he is once again seeking office. Derrick Shepherd, a Democrat from Marrero, qualified to run for the 87th District House seat Thursday. Political analyst Clancy Dubos says whether Shepherd, a convicted felon, will remain on the ballot remains to be seen…:

The Iberville Parish Sheriff’s office says Plaquemine Mayor Tony Gulotta died this morning of an apparent heart attack. He was 57.

With LSU and the Saints both kicking off their season openers this weekend on the road, Louisiana restaurants are expecting fans to pour in. Erica Burns with the Louisiana Restaurant Association says after the summer lull, the packed houses will be a nice boost for establishments. She says bars and restaurants often see increased business during football season…:

Former Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover has qualified to run for his old District 4 seat in the Louisiana House of Representatives. Glover, a Democrat, held the same spot in the House from 1996 to 2006 before he was elected Mayor of Shreveport. Political analyst Elliott Stonecipher says Glover is very popular in that district…:

The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office says a Houma man is under arrest for attempted second degree murder after his girlfriend showed up at a gas station with multiple stab wounds. They say the suspect, 35-year-old Ashraf Khalil, was on scene when deputies arrived and taken into custody. They believe the incident happened inside a vehicle and the 23-year-old victim suffered wounds to her arm, back, chest, hand and her throat was cut. She is in critical condition.

The candidate sign-up period for Louisiana’s October 24th election officially ended at 4:30 Thursday afternoon. The Secretary of State’s Office says almost 2,100 candidates statewide qualified for the 1,150 state and local offices up for grabs in the election. A total of 494 candidates across the state were elected automatically when no one signed up to run against them.

A television commercial has been released by the Louisiana Water Coalition, a political action committee, reminding voters of David Vitter’s 2007 prostitution scandal. Political Analyst Bernie Pinsonat says Vitter supporters already know this information and have stuck with him since day one…

The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles will not change their policies regarding photo IDs following an incident where a transgender woman was denied a new ID. State Police Superintendent Col. Mike Edmonson says the policy allowing clerks to question individuals about how they represent themselves in order to prevent fraud will remain in place. However, Edmonson says transgender people will be allowed to take their photo as they appear every day.
