It’s going to be an amazing weekend outside to enjoy some football and an outdoor BBQ. Emelie Gunn reports on this fall-like cold front:

A Marine who was killed in a single-vehicle rollover crash during a training exercise in California was from Louisiana, according to military officials. 21-year-old Corporal Bryan Lauw of Denham Springs graduated from Live Oak in 2012 and became a Marine the following June. Officials say the incident also injured 18 other Marines at a seaside base north of San Diego and remains under investigation.

Authorities in New Orleans say an NOPD officer was injured by shrapnel when he was shot at when responding to a crime scene Friday. The police department says the officer is going to be okay and that he was hurt when the bullet fired at him passed through his patrol car’s windshield. A 28-year-old man was shot and killed in the incident and NOPD officer, Kenneth Gill, was sent to the hospital according to a news release. The suspects in this incident are at large.

A former state legislator, who served two years in federal prison after pleading guilty to money laundering charges in 2008, announces that he is once again seeking office. Derrick Shepherd, a Democrat from Marrero, qualified to run for the 87th District House seat Thursday. Political analyst Clancy Dubos says whether Shepherd, a convicted felon, will remain on the ballot remains to be seen.

Louisiana is in for a beautiful weekend. You’ve probably already felt that fall-like air as you walked outside this morning. Jonathan Brazzell with the National Weather Service says today’s afternoon highs will be in the mid 80s and tomorrow we should be seeing those temperatures even lower…:

He says it’ll be a great time to spend some time outdoors because it’s going to feel refreshing compared to what we’ve been seeing the past few months.

Three mosquito pools representing two locations in Ouachita Parish tested positive for West Nile virus. Mosquito Abatement for the region said these samples were collected at the start of September. Two of the pools were collected between West Monroe High School and First Baptist of West Monroe. The third was collected in the River Oaks Subdivision of Monroe. Thea areas were treated by truck Friday and will be again on Monday and Tuesday.

With LSU and the Saints both kicking off their season openers this weekend on the road, Louisiana restaurants are expecting fans to pour in. Eric Gill has the story…:

The Louisiana Supreme Court Late Friday issued a stay for New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu. That means he avoids house arrest for now in the firefighter pay dispute. In a last-minute decision, the state’s high court spared Landrieu from having to serve the punishment because of the city’s apparent failure to pay $75 million to firefighters in a decades-old legal dispute.

An 80 year old man tragically lost his life when he was hit while changing a tire on the side of the road Thursday in Baton Rouge. State Police spokesperson Bryan Lee says Lawrence Shepherd was hit by a 47-year-old driver who lost control and missed a curve. He reminds drivers to remain vigilant for pedestrians along roadways…:

He says the driver of the vehicle that hit Shepherd is facing charges.

The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested a Houma man in connection to the stabbing of his girlfriend. Spokesperson Dawn Foret says 35-year-old Ashraf Khalil is charged with attempted second degree murder after a woman ran into a convenience store begging for help after claiming she was stabbed by him in a vehicle:

She says the 23-year-old victim is in serious condition but is expected to recover.

Restaurants are anticipating a huge boost in business this weekend as fans pour in to watch football…:

Governor Bobby Jindal and fellow GOP Presidential hopeful Donald Trump continued their back and forth on Twitter today. The sparing began on the heels of Jindal calling Trump’s campaign a carnival act run by an egomaniac narcissist. Trump fired back saying he doesn’t respond to people who poll 1%, but he’s been responding. Today Trump tweeted calling Jindal a lightweight who is unoriginal for making fun of his hair.

Former Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover has qualified to run for his old District 4 seat in the Louisiana House of Representatives. Glover, a Democrat, held the same spot in the House from 1996 to 2006 before he was elected Mayor of Shreveport. Political analyst Elliott Stonecipher says Glover is very popular in that district…:

He says it’ll be interesting to see if the other candidates in this race really decides to take Glover on.

The Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office says the mayor of Plaquemine, 57-year-old Tony Gulotta, died after a massive heart attack this morning. They say Gullotta had a history of heart disease and collapsed at a friend’s house before being rushed to the hospital. He is survived by his wife and two children.

A former lawmaker who served two years in federal prison, signed up to run again. Derrick Shepherd, a Democrat from Marrero who was convicted of money laundering, is seeking the 87th District House seat. Political analyst Clancy Dubos says even though Shepherd says he plans to fight this, the state constitution prohibits convicts from seeking public office at the state level..:

He says with just four weeks until early voting begins, Shepherd doesn’t have much time to resolve the issue.

The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s office arrests a man on attempted second degree murder charges for allegedly stabbing his girlfriend multiple times while they were in a vehicle. Spokesperson Dawn Foret says 35-year-old Ashraf Khalil was detained after the victim escaped to get help at a gas station. She says the girlfriend is in serious condition but is expected to survive.

In somewhat of a surprise move, former Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover has qualified to run for his old District 4 seat in the Louisiana House of Representatives. He’s going up against educator Fred Moss IV and accountant Reginald Johnson. Political analyst Elliott Stonecipher says Glover has the highest name recognition by far…:

Glover, a Democrat, held the same spot in the House from 1996 to 2006 before he was elected Mayor of Shreveport.

Lee says police will be investigating why Huang lost control of his vehicle and they do anticipate charges will be filed.

Qualifying for the fall elections came to a close yesterday and nearly half of Louisiana’s state lawmakers are going back to the Capitol unopposed. 20 out of 39 senators and 49 out of 105 House members will not have anyone challenging them in the October primary.
